“None of us take it for granted” “If I wanted an easy life I would have gone to oxford” Trinity reserve fulfilled every private school stereotype in existence
That's why 3 of the trinity cambridge guys went on to Oxford for postgraduate studies (their captain for a masters) and Matthew and Aled for PhDs at Magdalen college Oxford ;) speaks for itself.
The irony of the "In Da Club" beat as the music choice while the team is being announced at 11:08. "You can find me in da club". Nope, you'll find none of these in da club.
The most questions I have got right on an episode is 20. 7:27 and 28:35. When I was about 11 - 15 I used to go to bed with the 1986 RAC Guide Book. I learnt the approximate populations of towns and cities in the UK.
+Mike Fuller I can tell about 95% of towns and cities in England, with a population of about 50,000 or more, by the shape of the built up area on a map.
"The clever men at Oxford Know all that's to be known, But none of them no half as much As intelligence Mr Toad!" Sung By 'Toad' From 'The Wind In The Willows' ( 1906 ) Kenneth Graham ( 1859 - 1932 )
Cameron , it may not be on anymore but university challenge was the British offshoot from the American College Bowl or something like that.... Referenced in the great film Diner
Oxbridge colleges shouldn't have their own teams. They do teaching but they don't award degrees. You can't really call an institute that don't award degrees as having university status.
@@Isleofskye just going into my third year reading Economics at UCL so it turned out ok-ish in the end. Hoping I'll have better luck with my Master's applications!
I searched each & every corner of the internet for "University Challenge S20E27 - Christmas special (4)" with no luck. It would be much appreciated if you could upload it or send me a link for the video. Regards.
I think that Sudan has been just as tortured as Ethiopia over time! I have got as many as 20 questions right on an episode watching from home. The Brave The brave do never shun the light; / Just are their thoughts and open are their tempers; / Freely without disguise, they love or hate; / Still are they found in the fair face of day, / And heav'n and men are judges of their actions. Nicholas Rowe ( 20 / 6 / 1674 - 6 / 12 / 1718 ) Poet and Dramatist who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1715. The 4th British Poet Laureate between Nahum Tate (1652 - 1715 ), Irish Poet and Playwright who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1692 and Laurence Eusden ( 1688 - 1730 ), English Poet and Playwright who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1718. Lawrence Eusden was the youngest British Poet Laureate, who received the bays on the 30 December, 1718 at the age of 30 years and 3 months. The post of British Poet Laureate used to be for life but New Labour changed the post to 10 years after the death of Ted Hughes in 1998. I am a bit nutty about this sort of thing! Cheers - Mike.
Well then, why does Jeremy Paxman think so highly of such ability to answer these questions?! A lot of times I have only got 4,5 or 6 questions right. I like dolphins! Good point! Thanks for the reply sd2787! With Best Wishes! Cheers - Mike.
Hi, sd2787! Thanks for the reply! This seems like a profound declination of my intelligence! I don't understand! You may be cleverer than me! With best wishes, sd2787! Cheers - Mike.
Sorry, but I object to Cameron Quinn's comment that there would never be anything like this on American television. There WAS something EXACTLY like it. It was called College Bowl, and it ran for twelve years on U.S. TV and another 30 years on radio. This month, it was announced that there would be a new run of the show. I was on my college's team for three years in the 1980s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Bowl
41:38 There would never be anything like this in American television, it expects too much of the viewers, it expects too much of the contestants -> I agree that it expects too much of the US viewers, land of FOX News but there are plenty of more than qualified college students.
+Widmerpool99 Apparently, comprehending my comment also expects too much of you. I said there are plenty of more than qualified college students, but FOX News type of viewers wouldn't like a show like this.
rosecolouredglasses You made it seem as though all of the US watches dumb Fox News. "Land of Fox News". Wth? Basically, Republicans won't like this show. As an American I agree, they don't like facing facts.
That student is clueless. We have Jeopardy that runs 5 days a week, with questions just as challenging. I believe that's why Monkman was so good, no buzzer hesitation, smart, and quick with answers
The criteria for joining university challenge is wrong! It shouldn't be based on the initial tests alone, but also be based on things like confidence under pressure and thinking under pressure. A really intelligent nerd may crack under pressure!
Mr. Cameron Quinn needs to go back to school. For him to say "there would never be anything like this on American television" when GE College Bowl ran on American television for 12 years (1958-1970) is just hilarious! And guess what Mr. Smarty Pants, it was a radio show before that. Stick to French and philosophy!
he is right though, I'm American and I wanted something like this on television right now but sadly our television are full of crappy reality show. So, he is right and you can't blame the guy for thinking that way.
