They're a bit slow, especially on bonuses, and Chadha needs to be more decisive in answering. I think they may fall swiftly to a team like Imperial. But I agree that they're a enjoyable team to watch, and I hope they continue to do well. EDIT to add that they did indeed fall swiftly to Imperial. A nice and very competent team, but they bowed out at the right time and perhaps even lucked into a couple wins.
"The Budget was introduced in the British Parliament by David Lloyd George on 29 April 1909. Lloyd George argued that the People's Budget would eliminate poverty, and commended it thus: This is a war Budget. It is for raising money to wage implacable warfare against poverty and squalidness. I cannot help hoping and believing that before this generation has passed away, we shall have advanced a great step towards that good time, when poverty, and the wretchedness and human degradation which always follows in its camp, will be as remote to the people of this country as the wolves which once infested its forests." "The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all." The Man who was Thursday (1908) ch. 11 G.K Chesterton
Thanks Cosmic P. Improved my Monday, as usual! A good game with no certainty of the ultimate winner for quite a while. Another 5 minutes and Sheffield could easily have come back. Mcmillan is definitely Birkbeck's saviour!
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! Another back and forth affair between two excellent teams. Really sorry to see one go, but them's the breaks. The winning team looks to be a very stong contender, going forward. My best to both teams, and each individual.
Wonderful match between two great teams! Commiserations - so sorry to see such a great team leave the competition. Many congrats to the winners - you were on fire!! Well done. Can't wait to see you again. Thank you CP soooo much for putting this up so quickly. Cheers!
Yes it's like reading the critic's reviews of a film before watching it and then complaining that they revealed the story line and gave away the ending. @@zaphbrox8239
It's part of the meta of University Challenge now. You can't confer on starters, but you can convey to your teammates that you have no intention to answer by doing something like that. Although usually most teams just have their members raise their hands off their buzzers.
It might just be confirmation bias on my part, but it feels like every time a "20th century composer" is mentioned in the question there's like a 60% chance it's Shostakovich.
Birkbeck McMillan today gave me flashes of performances by Max Zeng of Imperial, the announcer was just going "Imperial Zeng" over and over again in those matches
MUCH better from both teams in comparison to their 1st QF - shame we have to say goodbye to Sheffield but I think it means all of them have given at least one correct buzz in every game, which is a nice spread of contributions ;)! But you can't ignore Mr McMillan's brilliance - that's 22 (23 including the TB) in only 4 games - don't know if they'll reach the semis but if Birkbeck can replicate that performance there's every chance!
That was such high quality. Birkbeck caught fire towards the middle and that was kinda enough to keep them ahead. Very strong again from McMillan but the others chipped in significantly as well.
Thank you, CP! You are truly wonderful! I absolutely loved this match. Birkbeck impressed me very much with their upbeat attitude. Sheffield might have done a little better if they hadn't been so apprehensive. Overall, I loved both teams.
Sometimes with Birkbeck, there are so many suggestions and words bandied about it''s hard to know who to attribute the correct answer to. In any case a fine collaboration.
As usual, there's always someone shouting an answer... Here: "LUCIFER" ! =P (But that's because I live in a spanish-speaking country and "Light" is "Luz", so it was easier. =P
Neither team was close to getting this right so maybe it doesn't matter but did anyone else find it odd that for the second picture round they were asked to give a one-word answer but the answer has two words? Could this be a gaffe by the writers?
Re: Ever-increasing download file size - while we're all eternally+internally hugely grateful to Cosmic P for his splendid efforts I do wonder why the low-res 144 option that I almost always select seems to have grown from a around 22-23 Mb to 40Mb+ in the space of a year or so. This trend seems to be occurring with many RU-vid file downloads. Does anyone know if RU-vid's operatives are able to slyly secrete cookies and other spyware in their zillions of video files so that they can do a little sneaky snooping whenever we download what we believe to be innocent, harmless video files? Anyone smart enough to attempt a very brainy response? Paul G
I thought the questions were kind of hard this time around. I managed for once to keep count all the way through (using a counter app on my mobile) and got only 11 right. Then again, I know nothing about electronic music of the late 20th century and I’m not especially strong on Africa or southeast Asian history.
Amol gives that bit of encouragement to every team that is somewhat behind. (I’m never sure if the team it is directed toward finds it reassuring or a bit unnerving.)
It is unnerving, condescending and pointless. They are not going to try harder or do better, because the questioner makes such a comment. The only reason I can think of why Amol would make such a comment is that Paxo used to make the same inane comment although not quite as often.
The look of panic and disgust on Birkbeck's faces when they had to answer questions on English towns outside London. The story of divided Britain, plain for all to see. The creative writer from Ealing thinks that Derby's on the East Coast. Next please...
Thank you as always for doing a fantastic job with the statistics. A few other observations: 19 rounds (19 rounds completed; the game ended as the starter question in the 20th round was being asked) 22 starter questions (19 rounds + 3, as neither side answered the initial starter question correctly in the 9th, 14th and 19th rounds) 57 bonus questions (19 rounds x 3) 79 questions in total (22 starter + 57 bonus) 505 points available in total (22 x10, plus 57 x 5) 71.3% of the 505 points available were scored ((200 + 160)/505) Birkbeck 39.6% of the total points available (200/505); Starters 10/22; Bonuses 21/30: Penalties x1 Sheffield 31.7% of the total points available (160/505); Starters 9/22; Bonuses 15/27; Penalties x1 Incidentally, there were a few minor errors in your analysis, which I thought I might mention. They are extremely minor. The job that you do with the statistics is phenomenal, and it is greatly appreciated by me. I mention the following only as a matter of interest. You recorded 28 attempts at starter questions in total (i.e. 10 + 0 + 2 + 3; 4 + 4 + 1 + 4). There actually 29 attempts at starter questions in total (19 correct answers and 10 incorrect answers. This is excluding the starter question in the 20th round which was interrupted by the game ending). You recorded McMillan as getting 4 starter questions wrong (i.e. 6/10); he actually got 5 starter questions wrong (9:24, 11:02, 20:29, 26:25, 26:39). You recorded McGough as getting 1 starter question wrong (i.e. 3/4); he actually got 0 starter questions wrong. And you recorded Colclough as getting 0 starter questions wrong (i.e. 1/1); he actually got 1 starter question wrong (26:20). As I said, they are extremely minor errors. The names McGough and Colclough are somewhat similar.
@@jamesmakey2792 thank you so much for bringing this up James. I don't know how I've managed those errors. I shall rectify them accordingly. You are appreciated.
