Congratulations on finishing uni!! :D The period drama module sounds really interesting! I love watching different adaptations and seeing how people adapt different aspects differently. I'm doing something similar about fairy tales in german at the moment. :)

Whoa! So apparently I was the 5000th view on here. So excited I can't resist letting other people know about it. While I'm at it, thank you for showing & getting me interested in so many wonderful books, and congratulations on your English degree!

Congratulations on finishing university! I graduate next week and I'm very happy about this, I just finished my History and English Literature degree at Reading University :D I know lots about Beckett because we have the huge Beckett archive, which my uni is very pleased with, so they go on about it all the time! I'm very jealous you studied The Road, and loads of others commenters have said they have too, I feel like I've missed out...

I've read and loved many of these authors / titles. I feel like I deserve an honorary degree, but of course I didn't have to take exams or write papers about them. Thanks for reminding me to read The Third Policeman. It's one I've overlooked.

I am in my first year at university and well, it's ending soon, but I did The Road by Cormac McCarthy, my assignment on that was one of my favourites to put together. I did Yeats as well this year but he has been my favourite since the beginning of A Level. I did Heart of Darkness in A level too. I'M DOING THE GATHERING IN AN EXAM ON WEDNESDAY AND IM DYING AT THE THOUGHT. Ironically I am watching your video and commenting instead of revising, but I have Othello and Fantomina on Saturday. I love watching your videos about books and it's interesting to see how many similar ones we are doing! :) Good luck in the real world n'stuff aha!

On the topic of Charles Dickens adaptations: some of the scenes for the adaptation of David Copperfield that Daniel Radcliffe did of David Copperfield before he did Harry Potter were filmed at my old school, so a handful of the teachers there have met him

This is actually useful for me because I'm thinking about studying abroad at Trinity in Dublin in my third year (I'm in Scotland, so that'd be my 2nd last year) so it's good to get an opinion on the irish literature. We've studied Gulliver's Travels and Waiting for Godot is in the second year syllabus but apart from that we haven't studied many Irish works :)

Ahhh I only managed to fight my way through one year of English Literature at uni before I dropped out.. doesn't seem like you had to study any of the same stuff as me, which is a shame. Well done for finishing though, it's weird to think if I'd stayed I would have graduated last year. Lovely video by the way, have a nice day :)

Just finished my degree in english and history Monday. The Road was probably my favourite in the four years I loved my Irish lit courses too, amongst women was really good, butcher boy too. Ullyses kind of killed me, we studied it for four months solid. I feel like the magic was lost on 9 o clock lectures on a Tuesday after a week or two.

If you can finish Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, it is because your are either a sociopath, a masochist, or very very determined. So brutal.

it's amazing how much reading you do when studying english in an english-speaking country. literature was only small part for me, i mostly stuck to cultural studies, lots of watching TV. i had to read one book for one lecture throughout the 3 years, and i didn't even finish it (satire from 1742 wasn't v captivating). classes that were prefaced with "students will have to have read the following 5 novels before attending" were practically empty, no one wanted to do the reading. we're such a lazy bunch here. I have the same issue of Oscar Wilde's short stories, bought it heavily discounted on amazon warehouse deals :D It's so tempting to go on warehouse deals, set the max price to 3€ and see what comes up. I have too many books now :3 I have never read The Heart of Darkness, I have only read about it in essays dealing with postcolonialism which mention it as being racist.
@candysomething
@candysomething 9 лет назад
keeponrockin Yeah the racist thing is fascinating - I was a big fan of Chinua Achebe before I came to Heart of Darkness, so immediately I was just on his 'side'. Definitely worth knowing about before you read the book, anyhoo!

The Country Girls trilogy: "...and there's romance". Ummm debatable :O

Lorenza Pozzi Sure. Kate and Baba have idealised notions of romance and love. If not romance, certainly sex.
@LoriAistulf
@LoriAistulf 9 лет назад
candysomething There's definitely the idea of it - at least in Kate, I wouldn't say Baba has it but that depends on the definition of romance. I just don't want someone to pick up these books expecting a love story! (Oh and congratulations!

Hey Candice, I realise you might not see this but I know that you studied English Lit at QUB which is the course I'm interested in applying to this year, and I was wondering if you had to give many speeches/presentations? I'm terrified of those but I don't want it to inhibit doing this course.

This was so interesting to me because I just finished my first year of university and I'm studying English as one of my arts subjects so I love seeing what books you've read for your degree. We read Dubliners this year and I think we'll be tackling Ulysses next year! I think we get to choose from different modules next year and I definitely want to read more Irish literature. Can't wait to read Wilde and Beckett especially!

For this first year of my A-level English Literature course, we studied "Pride and Prejudice" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" and next year we study more feminist poets and writers. The fact that my English teachers are highly feminist apparently has a lot to do with this. I have no complaints, though! I don't think I could handle English Lit at uni though, it's a lot of reading and I can't concentrate on books for long enough to finish them.
