I bought a 15 yr old OTTB for 4,500 as my first horse last year. And I didn’t bother to look at papers because we were a direct match. Well about a few months later we realized he was/is Secritariats great grandson. My horse didn’t win many races but when he was born he was sold for 360,000$ which I thought was so cool! He is 16 now and we do some fun shows in the summer and lessons every week, he’s my perfect boy!

Same. I just adopted a horse and was looking for chestnut geldings. After an uneventful day, I turned to my car to leave. The OTTB adoption trainer asked me to check out this bay and I was just done & not looking forward to a long drive back home but… why not. That bay horse perked up from afar, walked right up & nuzzled my forehead, leaned in and curled inward “Is this a… hug?” Lady Trainer was shocked, “yes a hug! You have to adopt this one, you were chosen!” 🥺 This horse literally saved me, they know when you are lonely, sad and torn up. Horses are our angels wo wings 🪽 ❤

These horses have such a short shelf life. They are bred to win, and when they don’t, their fate can be cruel. You and the other adopters are admirable and your horses are fortunate.

I truly hate the racing industry!! It is so awful. They are fortunate to even make it through a fatal injury as a racehorse.
@learobinson4450
@learobinson4450 19 дней назад
@rachelmerz2122. My family was involved with thoroughbred racing for 3 generations as breeders & owners of racing stock. Your comment is proof you don’t know anything about thoroughbred racing. Over 80% of Thoroughbreds in the US retire from the track without significant injuries. There are around 18,000 thoroughbreds born each year & 80-85% race so that’s roughly 15,000 Thoroughbred race horses each year with most racing for 4-5 years. That’s roughly 70,000 active Thoroughbred race horses but only 700-800 suffer significant injuries in a given year. That is unfortunate & the racing industry is improving horse safety (fatalities have actually decreased) so you’re statement that “They are fortunate to even make it through a fatal injury as a racehorse” is patently false & shows your ignorance. I’m also going to point out that the vast majority of horses going to slaughter each year are not Thoroughbreds. Quarter Horses make up 85% of US horses sent to slaughter. Draft breeds, usually from the Amish who actually breed them for slaughter, make up the next largest segment. If you are going to hate anything at least take the time to actually learn about it so you can say it’s an informed hatred & not one born of ignorance.

That horse lived a drug life before you rescued him. You won't find that recorded in the paper work. Just part of the race horse life.
@learobinson4450
@learobinson4450 17 дней назад
@raymondrhorer2695. And being drugged is also part of a Dressage horses life, a reining horses life, a show jumping horses life. Basically if it’s a competitive sport horse it’s receiving meds. A woman I work for spent $25k on a Lusitano from a trainer in FL that conditioned horses for a woman that wanted them to compete in the Olympics. The woman bought him when he was 2 years old from a world renowned breeding farm in Portugal & he was sent to her trainer in FL. My boss got him when he was 5 & he spent the first month with her going through withdrawal. When she finally tried to ride him he would sit down on his haunches like a dog every time the saddle was put on. Turns out the ill fitting dressage saddle the guy in FL used damaged the poor horses back so the trainer, instead of using a saddle that fit properly, was giving him drugs. But that didn’t get rid of all of the horse’s pain so he learned when he sat down no one could ride him. That’s why my boss got a $80k purebred Lusitano from João Pedro Rodrigues for $25k. It’s been 7 years since she got him & he still has problems with his back though he no longer sits on his haunches like a dog. So if you’re gonna talk about all the meds & drugs being given to horses be sure to include all horse sports in your comments.

My rescue OTTB is also a Secretariat baby! We have had 3 great granddaughters of him at my barn including my personal mare. She was sold as a 2 year old for $35,000 and then again as a 4 year old to be a brood mare for $30,000. She ended up having 3 babies before being abandoned and starved. One of her fillies is racing this year and has made $78,900 this year alone. I ended up rescuing her starved nearly to death for $1. She is now the absolute sweetest mare in the world and enjoys doing liberty and ground work with me. We are finally starting under saddle soon as it too 2 and a half years to find a saddle that fit her high withers and slight sway back and I can't wait to see how far we go together!

AP Indy is my mare's great-grandsire, too! I found her in a horrible state, and she was only a three year old. She blossomed, though, and she became an absolute stunner as she entered her sixth year of life. I had her inspected and entered into the Oldenburg's mare books (she made Main Mare with only a point and a half below Premium), and she gave me the most precious gift in the world. The sporthorse I'd dreamed of my entire life but never thought I'd be able to acquire. I'll treasure her for the rest of her life for it, too. Now, if only he'd quit jumping fences in the middle of the night and scaring me with possible injuries! Did I mention he's a brat? LOL, I love that horse!

Thoroughbreds are raced as babies, starting at age 2, when their bones are not fully mature; which happens around 5 years of age. Based on that knowledge, it is possible Archie was injured in his last race. I used to watch every thoroughbred race I could find, because I have loved thoroughbreds ever since I was a very little girl, & I’m 69 now. I have learned over the years that racing horses of any breed, in fact competitions of most kinds are a business before all else, & the horses are always the ones who suffer. Bless you for saving this beauty. If any of you has never seen a Secretariat race on YT, then be sure to look up The Belmont Stakes of 1973. There will never be another like him again in any of our lifetimes.

I agree, I’m 75 and seen that race on TV at the time, love Secretariat, he was an exceptional horse, and one of my favorite racers, the other is Ruffian a filly racing with the boys, and who broke her leg on the track and had to be put down on account of the injury being too great, she was suffering too much….they can’t tell us of the pain they endure, only their actions towards it is in silent suffering…..👍❤️🙏🏼

It's been years back but I still miss her. She was highly intelligent, and we had a very close relationship. I even took her to college with me. The last horse I purchased was a 19yo OTTB, to be my personal mount and perhaps a little bit of lessons. His claim to fame was a pony horse on the track, and used as a lesson horse. Supposedly he only raced 6 times, however looking up his record after purchase found he raced 50 times and was in the money 5 times. Small races, minimal earnings. Sadly he was unsound with kissing spine discovered soon after brought him home. Despite being unrideable he now has a fantastic home, lots of room to run and is the best companion horse for my other gelding. Glad to hear your Archie has found a good home.

$30k is very cheap for a Thoroughbred. Also most Thoroughbreds have most of those sires in their pedigree. He is lucky he found a good human. The Belmont winner from 2023 Arcangelo was bought for $35k. His sire was Arrogate who was a world champion. He was a little scrawny and got overlooked in the sales. He has won over a million $$$. He is now standing at stud with very high expectations for the breeding shed.

When I was racing, I always looked at the 1st 3 dams..if they had a high % of winners of racing age (not just winners from starters) ..unless the 1st dam none of racing age..then I look at the 4th damage as well...each of those dams have to have 75% or higher of winners each for me to consider it...found one for $500 and her only problem was her temper as a 2 yr old filly...I told a close friend of mine about her..told him to put her in "at the bottom" (lowest level of claiming) 1st time out to make it easy for her..early on in the breaking process she broke him..physically..smashed him on the ground..broke sever bones including his pelvis..it took him a year to get her to the races..he did what I told him and put her in a $5k maiden claiming at River Downs(now called Belterra) and she won easy...2nd race he ran her at Turfway on an artificial surface...she hated it and didn't even try, finished dead last..3rd race he took her to Mountaineer (West Virginia) and put her back on the dirt for $5k and she WON by 15 1/2 lengths!!..my friend made the mistake of not raising her price high enough and she got claimed for $10K..soon after she was winning in allowance races..totally awesome for a $500 dollar purchase❣️

I am sure you know that the purchase price is only part of the cost of racing a horse--sometimes a small part of the cost. There are stabling costs, trainer costs, farrier costs, feed costs, veterinary costs, shipping costs, jockey costs, & entry fees. It might be good to explain that to some of your viewers who may not know anything about the cost of owning a horse & especially the cost of owning a race horse.

So nice to see your farm and the work you do there. I rescued an OTTB too. "Tanners My Name" He raced 7 times and won $26000, but was pulled off the track shortly after turning 4. I too think it was injury related. He had an engorged capsule on his left hind. But he is the SWEETEST horse... if maybe a little lazy at times. But so intelligent. He too had Mr Prospector in his blood lines plus a few others like Northern Dancer ... I fear the thoroughbreds are getting a little inbred. Anyway... I renamed him Charlie Brown which better fits his personality and was able to retrain him for low level pleasure riding, trails, some pole work and low jumps, and found him a wonderful home with a woman who just wants to love on him and play at different disciplines. He is a happy beautiful horse.

My late and much beloved old Appaloosa was a close relative of Secretariat's, too. His sire and Secretariat were first cousins out of Princequillo, in my horse's case, Princequillo's son Prince Alert, and his son Alert Again, the first cousin (my horse's sire). Mine was foaled to be a racing Appaloosa but he turned out to really prefer jumping although he could move right quick when he wanted to. His name was Mr. Royal Alert. "Royal" runs in the pedigree as it features as part of names in that lineage quite a ways back. Secretariat's dam was no different (Somethingroyal). My Royal had Thoroughbred siblings all over the place but to my knowledge, he was the only Appaloosa in the line. He died 19 years ago this past May, may he rest in peace. Royal was a pole-bender, a hunter, a 3-day eventer, and finally ended as a lesson horse before I bought him for his retirement. He ended his days on grass, at the center of everyone's attention, with his favorite companion sheep (I raised Katahdin sheep for many, many years) nearby, on a beautiful May afternoon. That's the way to go if you ask me. :) Oh, and yes, those colors will run. Appaloosas that is. 😘 Appaloosa races are quite popular in some areas of the US and Canada.

$30, 000 is cheap for a potential race horse. And though I love Secretariat and consider him the best ever, where he is in this horses pedigree is too far back to be of much influence. Nice its there though. Race horses who don't make money can and do have sad future's or no future. Their only value is in what they can earn. This horse is so lucky to have been bought by you and I hope the future for him will be a good one.

Not nearly always true. Many owners are caring and find great homes or second careers for their race horses. Most recently we have one now living her best life teaching children horsemanship at a youth school. One as brood mare for a great caring horse ranch. One will be going soon to an equine college student. We don't sell unless they are to good homes. (Oh and several who have passed on from old age in retirement that we didnt sell) Media usually only reports the negative. There are many reaponsible caring owners.

Indy who were daughters of Secretariat and both race winners) and a few more of note on both sides. 8 races, only one third place finish.

This was a really good video, and when you named off his ancestry, I noticed that the one name you DIDN'T mention was "Northern Dancer" (you did mention Secretariat and Native Dancer)..."Northern Dancer" was the 1st Canadian bred horse to WIN the Kentucky Derby and I thought that was a very important part of this beautiful animal's lineage. IF the tattoo # is right, this horse has major winning in his blood if not in his feet. He's a truly lucky fella, and you and your group should be highly praised and thanked for all you do for these incredible animals.

Most of Secretariat offspring make excellent jumpers. They can be high strong and get nervous in the ring but they can really jump. The other horse you have with the sway back I think it makes sense to exercise that horse at least four times a week because when the top line is built back up with the spine. The horse seems to travel fairly well in the video. He doesn’t look like he’s in any pain as he moves. So if I owned that horse and I’ve had many horses off the track directly off the track, I would exercise that horse at least four times a week even if it’s just walking One or two of those days until the horses fit enough to do more. I would also have a chiropractor a very good chiropractor come and look at him and give you his opinion because he can definitely help him. I would also do acupuncture on him which will relax the back muscles to take the stress off the spine and as the muscles get stronger as I said it will lift the spine and support the spine . It’s wonderful what you do.

That is not a really high high price for a thoroughbred because they have yearly oxygens and they have two year-old auctions and I know I had one that was a running quarter. His father was a quarter horse and his mother was a thoroughbred so I know that ponytails horse rescue has a horse that is a descendent a secretariat also, you might want to get a hold of them if they still have that horse, that’s ponytails

Wow, how exciting both Horses bloodline with Bold Ruler...he was a top breeding Sire but Secretariat (God's Horse) has the Huge Heart gene (22lb.) from his mothers side SomethingRoyal..endurance, Secretariats neck was thick at the base I noticed that difference between (the other Horses) his competitors. I 'think' that might be a sign what size Heart a Thoroughbred (body habitus) might have inherited...anyway I love Secretariat and I'm excited for you : ) 🙏✝️🙏

Fun fact- secretariat was known as a broodmare sire. You’re gonna see him in a lot of modern TB pedigrees. As well as Slew and Storm Cat. 30k is barely worth the effort of most big stud farms. Training and race prep is very expensive… making money at it is mostly chasing dragons

I've only recently started getting into horse rescue and training videos here on youtube. Last week, I found Pony Tales Refuge who are based in Wisconsin, and they had an owner surrender of a thoroughbred who was related to Seattle Slew. Apparently, the owner had tried all manner of things, but he was constantly having trouble with his feet, and he was only 7y.o and had had 7 owners. 😢 The rescue called him Garnet.
