As a medical professional, I have learned how to read a doctor's handwriting. I read the death certificate not as saying myocardial infarction (heart attack), but myocardial insufficiency (congestive heart failure) which happens when the heart does not pump blood as well as it should. When this happens, blood backs up and fluid can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath. It can easily become fatal if bad enough. Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) could have been a contributing factor. That last scrawl listed gout.

Wow. He was already 65 when he started on I Love Lucy. I am impressed. Desi Arnaz's autobiography says that Frawley looked at just the pages of the script that said "Fred". I guess he was saving his energy!

As an Iowa boy I can say that any Iowan who made it big is a bit of pride & joy for us. His early life has several twists & turns, from stenographer for the UP in Omaha to a court reporter in Chicago to working for another railroad in St. Louis, to starting a vaudeville act with his brother Paul. & that is only a part of the journey. Thanks for sharing this info about how his life ended.

I believe he died on the street. My dad's best friend his name is Dick Burright, told me the story of how he and a friend were walking down the street and an old man had collapsed, they ran over to help him, (and then seeing that it was William Frawley) assisted the nurse to take him into the building and He had told me that Mr Frawley had died in his arms before going into the building. I wished I could remember the name of the building but it had been so many years ago. My dad's friend was about 25 to 30 years old at the time and in great shape and a very honest man from what I remember of him.

This is probably asked so many times - and this post isn’t the proper one to use - Which post - assuming one exists- Do you have listed your favorite I-LOVE-LUCY episodes ? Or do you find it next to impossible to have a list ? I’d like to see and contribute to yours - obviously a post about a man’s passing isn’t correct place… so sorry and thanks same time.

For those of you with MeTV, the My Three Sons episodes with William Frawley are currently running, and will probably run through the rest of August before his character is written out as having gone to Ireland. In reality, he didn't pass the annual physical exam required by the studio, so they had to let him go. Sadly, his character was mentioned once or twice after his departure but then was never mentioned again. From Wikipedia: Frawley's final on-camera performance was on October 25, 1965, with a brief cameo appearance in Lucille Ball's second television sitcom, The Lucy Show, in the episode "Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest". Frawley plays a horse trainer and Lucy comments: "You know, he reminds me of someone I used to know."

I had just heard he had a heart attack or whatever on the street, not sure if i had heard of where he actually died. I also heard a lot about how Vivian “celebrated” upon hearing of his death. I was about to play Monopoly with my family when i heard on radio about Vivan’s passing tho and it made me sad. I was 7 years old but I loved watching Lucy

I was born 97 years after william frawley was born. I am a fan of his work especially his work on I love lucy and my three sons. Though I had first seen him in the Abbott and costello movie one night in the tropics (1940). He was 79 when he passed on, and I read he had a longer lifespan then his costars on I love lucy. Nonetheless his passing was tragic. May he rest in peace he will always be remembered.

Hey Rick, enjoy your videos. As far as where Frawley died, it seems perfectly feasible to me that after collapsed, a motorist or cab driver may have stopped to help. Plenty of cantankerous old men (I include myself) don't want to go to hospitals,. It's possible he knew someone who lived nearby and wanted to be with them.

I remembered about him a little. About 1927, he got divorced. No children. In 1951 the new I Love Lucy show selecting actors and actress. Desi Aranz was asked to hire Bill. Desi says that Bill have drinking problems. But, he got a chance. He and Vivian wasn’t getting along. Bill was 22 years older than her. The story says that he collapsed on sidewalk is all about.

Exactly! The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel right by La Brea is a good ten blocks west on Hollywood Blvd. from Hollywood and Vine. Way too far to carry a heavy Frawley by any strong man! Even if Frawley was light why go all that distance? More likely he was taken or carried a few feet to the only restaurant there at the time(I ate there many times) on the northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine, or a cab was hailed or someone with a car took them to the lobby of The Knickerbocker or the nearby hospital(most likely) not Hollywood Presbyterian or Cedars of Lebanon(later moved and renamed Cedars Sinai) near also but farther.

My mom told me he was an alcoholic and couldn’t find work for a while. He went to Desi for I love Lucy, but Desi was hesitant to hire him because of his reputation. He promised Desi he wouldn’t drink during the time of the shows, so Desi said he would give him the job if he promised not to drink. He said to him, the first time you come to work drunk or alcohol on your breath, your contact gets ripped up and the rest is history. I’m sorry if you already knew this, or if it false, but I wanted to share it with you.

@@KCAlden It is said that Barbara Pepper also had a drinking problem and that's why Lucy & Desi passed on her joining the cast: since two drinkers would be inviting twice as much trouble. Barbra Pepper instead was cast as Doris Ziffel on GREEN ACRES where she appeared from 1965-68 before her own death from a Heart attack in 1969.

I was a combat medic in the army, so I know your right about carrying a body from point a to point b, it would be impossible to move him that far as you said. My guess is with massive heart attack he died in the street and they carried him to the first hotel you mentioned that makes more sense and that's where they could have made phone calls to the hospital and other needed call. Cool you tracked all that down.

The nurse had help, my dad's best friend told me the story because it was him that helped William Frawley seeing he had collapsed on the street with his male nurse right there he and a friend that was with him went over to help and he had died in his arms before even reaching the building. It just occurred to me that Frawley at 79, being by far the oldest of the four, also live longer than Lucille Ball (77), Vivian Vance (70), and Desi Arnaz (69). It also occurred to me that I Love Lucy depicted something you hardly see on TV: a friendship between two people who are 30 years apart in age. Such was the case with Ricky and Fred. I don't recall them making a big deal out of it. It simply was what it was.

That's very true and what a shame that we lost all of them way too soon, IMHO! I've never really given too much thought to the age difference between Ricky and Fred but yes, it's a rarity and just worked! Also, maybe Ricky was like the son he never had on some small level! It is just a thought.

He knew and worked with John Wayne. Sadly, William's character was killed in that movie. He was also in a Christmas Comedy movie called, "The Lemon Drop Kid." Bob Hope and him were in the movie. William was dressed as Santa, collecting money in a kettle. Very funny movie. If you have not seen it, Rick, you need to. William lived in that movie though. I knew he died from a heart attack but was not sure of all the details. Thanks! But William Frowley knew a lot of actors and actresses that were popular at the time. Take care.

Is the police station built on the hospital site the one shown on Adam 12?

If there's a definition of 'curmudgeon,' Bill Frawley's picture would be there.

I hate to say it but I believe Bill Frawley probably died on Hollywood Blvd. I too am familiar with Hollywood and that area having lived there for decades. If he indeed collapsed say at Hollywood & Vine that would still be a distance to "carry" a man who just had a major heart attack don't you think? It's possible I guess if his nurse had some sort of help, but he would know not to move such a sick person. It would make more sense to have someone call a ambulance from a nearby business ( pre cellphone days). In any event, your videos are a joy for me because I grew up in that era. Bill Frawley will always be grandpa "Bub" too me though, from MY THREE SONS. Thanks for the video!

Nobody has ever stated if Frawley tried to walked to the Hotel after experiencing chest pain collapsed and was carry by the nurse the rest of the way but I bet Frawley might have directed his male nurse to the hotel to rest or to call a ambulance . The hotel was where Frawley was pronounced dead or found so that is why it stated as his place of death.

Myocardial insufficiency, heart failure, underlying causes included arteriosclerosis and apparently gout? Hard to make out the last word.

Why carry someone to a hotel instead of calling an ambulance?

if someone is having a heart attack what would be the REASON to carry someone that far? Could someone have driven him to that location?

William Frawley's life had as many mysteries and secrets as his passing did. My cousin worked closely with many actors at that time, and came to know much about their private lives. Frawley had secrets, and I will NEVER divulge ANYTHING about it. It is totally unnecessary. Let us instead celebrate his life and tremendous accomplishments in show business during that lifetime. That is all that truly matters.

People often take credit for the efforts of others. Possibly someone quoted the nurse as "I carried him..."? If WF collapsed at such a busy tourist spot surely the nurse would have a small army of people willing to help carry him. Male nurse plus 5 eager fans could easily carry a little guy a few blocks (a bit stocky maybe, but only 5'9''). Not saying that is what happened but miscommunication would also explain the hotel part. If someone said "he was taken to his hotel" people who didn't know he had moved would simply assume the wrong place.
