I think the only thing you missed was at about 5:15 when she does "end" the cutoffs and the 3 notes she hits saying that word. It's not even sliding through the notes its clear e-E-E-end. Starts, goes up, and then hits another note on "eh" when she's on the way back down the end "end". I know you were mesmerized. And I only picked it out after watching an hour of your channel. Love it

Keeping track of sub-genres is okay to more or less know what to expect from a band, but some people take it too seriously and act like intolerable elitists. In my mind there are two genres of metal: Songs I like and songs I don't like.

That Drummer is ON POINT. A lot of drummers using a double kick do a L R L R pattern when doing that solid kick backing. But this guy is doing a L L R R pattern which is soooo much harder, not only for speed but for accuracy. But it gives that base rhythm a different feel, and it is terrific. Then in some parts I heard him do A FREAKING PARADIDDLE on the kicks........He is a machine....Full Stop.

You're right about Awakening having a double-entendre for the band, they had a solid decade before this and this album was a new echelon for them. They used to crash at our house when touring in their early years. So wild seeing how huge they are now, they deserve everything! Much love!

Brittney refers to the layering as her "Brittney Choir". Brittney wrote the story for two albums, "Apex" and "Abyss". The protagonist is the "Immortal" who is cursed to do the bidding of anyone who awakens him. The evil "Matriarch" is the antagonist who has awakened him. She needs him to collect her four sons so that she can kill them in a ritual to make herself immortal. In a neat gender switch, Brittney sings the male Immortal part while Grant growls the evil Matriarch. In "Tonight We Ride" she flexes her vocal muscles and channels Dio, Dickenson, Halford, and Tate in the process. It's not often we hear a female soprano sounding like a male metal falsetto.

Tonight We Ride isn't her highest notes either. Her highest note in that song is a Bb5. She has a B5 in Abyss, her doing Karaoke of Queen of the Reich, and Soulbound, C6 in the layered vocals for The Fall of the Galactic Guard and Ten Thousand Against One, and a D6 in The Fifth and the Fable as well as the layered vocals on Ripping Through Time.

I've watched a lot of these "vocal coach" react videos here on RU-vid but I have to say, I'm really liking this channel. Most channels you just watch them and the reactions are kinda plain and serious, with the coach just in 'critique mode" or something, but Elizabeth here really seems to enjoy the music and the discovery of new sounds and effects. You really get to see her marvel at the vocal ranges and tones and her general mannerisms give off a sense of humble experience, with no arrogance. Someone that, just by watching them, you feel like you can easily trust their judgement with zero bias. Truly amazing.

About the musicianship on display: Metal always has a focus on intrumental music, it is one of the few music genres that actually has a lot of instrumental pieces of music, either entire numbers or long sections of songs being instrumental only... It is really one of the things that sets metal apart from most other music genres...

Agreed, that's one of the things I always liked about metal, and it's also something that's really missing now, even in more modern metal. Even if the vocals might be good with it, not every song absolutely needs them.

One of the few? How about jazz, classical, folk, much of electronic music, noise music, traditional music in general, and sub-genres of all of the above. Sure pop, rock, rap and so on tend to shy away from long instrument-only sections, but that's what you expect from snappy radio friendly music.

There are masterpieces in other genres but since you're a metal fan the metal masterpieces are common knowledge and other genres aren't. This is called the availability bias.

Some answers to your questions: UTA plays power metal/melodic death metal. Currently there are 4 members, Brittney and Scott (drums) have been around the entire history of the band. Andrew (guitars) came around shortly after formation and then a little later Grant (guitars/screams/vocals) came. They've had a revolving door of bassists, and currently do not have an official one. They are releasing an album in a couple of weeks which is a direct sequal to the album this song is on (Apex) called Abyss. A few videos are out from that album which I recommend! So glad you're finally taking a look at this band, they absolutely kill it and deserve more exposure. Cheers for the great video as always! Edit: spelling and grammar.

I think you're backwards on when Grant and Andy joined. Grant joined in 2011 and Andy joined in 2014. Brittney and Scott have been there since the beginning.

I think that’s one of the things that distinguished the punks from the metal fans, since the bands seemed to be competing for basically the same group of fans in the early days. Punk looks really dead though while metal is still alive, albeit not at the height of popularity it enjoyed in the ‘80s.

my only complaint that the reliance on dual bass drumming is trapping too many drummers in 4/4 no matter the speed. i think a single bass would encoyrage drummers to explore different time sig's.

@@headlibrarian1996 There's still an underground punk scene, but metal really got going when punk was starting peter out, around 1980. Some players even transitioned to metal because they wanted to something more complex. Ross the boss comes to mind. And Motorhead.

I recommend checking out Opeth and Mikael Åkerfeldt. He’s the master of switching between growling and clean singing. Something like Ghost Of Perdition or The Drapery Falls, I’d love that! :)

Toughy I think so. In my view it has to be from mid era Opeth, around Still Life/Blackwater Park/Deliverance. When they had matured and their progressive metal still had some death metal in it, before they went prog rock and the growling went away. Blackwater Park/The Drapery Falls is probably when the aggression and softness blended most seamlessly. Amazing songwriting and arrangements.

I like.....on the older albums, she tended to stick to one style, you could def tell that it's her. On this new album though, it seems like she's changing her technique all the time. I really like the new album.

To fuel your fascination and and growl practice I recommend "the bee" or "toward or against" by Amorphis (who often tour with nightwish) as he hops in and out of a growl in the same phrase.

Opeth would likely be better, something from the Red Rocks performances, Mikael's clean vocals are stellar, and his grim vocals (when he does them) are still amazing. Opeth is THE band that got me into harsh vocals back in 1999-2000 with MAYH album, still one of my favorite albums of all time.

I discovered Unleash the Archers back in December and fell in love with them. So awesome! If you want recommendations, I've got a couple and they're both from Nightwish. Yours Is An Empty Hope live at Wembley and Sleeping Sun live at Tampere.

Heilung is a different experience. They don't have fans, they have brothers and sisters, and they don't have concerts, but rituals. Maria Franz's solo at the end of In Maidjan is great, but it takes a while to get there. I think "Norupo" (music video)/"krigsgaldr" live would be better first time songs than "In Maidjan." Either way, I would recommend recording the reaction to Heilung without pausing, sit still and just... feel the mood. The songs are very dependent upon letting the rhythms flow into your soul.

I've watched many "vocal coach reacts" videos to this song and I love how positive eaach and every one is. But you paying attention to the instrumental parts and giving the other band members credit is a nice touch. I love the band, I love the song. yeah, very catchy choruses are a hallmark of traditional/power metal (genre definitions get muddled quite a bit, but trad metal in Unleash the Archers vein is usually defined by a very strong iron Maiden/ judas priest influence.) Other bands going for these kind of choruses would be bands like Blind Guardian, who are kind of a must for every fan of nerdy things, what with them doing whole concept albums about Tolkien's Middle earth. all of the above are great reaction suggestions, by the way. Also, if you want virtuosity, I would recommend watching Ne Obliviscaris playing "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" Live. There's not much in terms of technical vocal analysis there unless you want to hear a pretty unusual combination of vocal styles growls/Classically trained) working together, but the playing/composition was good enough to be studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Very glad to see you expanding your horizons on the channel and exploring beyond Nightwish. Nothing against them, but some reaction channels get stuck in a rut of reacting to every single song and it would be a shame if you missed out on the wealth of quality and variety there's out there to explore.. It's very clear that you're having fun with it, and that makes it fun to watch. keep it up. :) PS: that said, there's one last sort of essential Nightwish song in terms of Floor's vocal range: Yours is an Empty hope.

First off, your channel is incredible. I'm not a singer and I feel like I learn a lot from your videos. Second, I love that you're doing Unleash the Archers. I'd love to see you do a video on something from Visigoth's Conqueror's Oath album. I think you'll be surprised by their sound. The entire album is essentially a story if played from start to finish, and you could probably pick any song from that album to cover. You might find Traitor's Gate to be an especially interesting song.

I NEVER get tired of UTA! :-) They are just so wonderfully talented and so genuinely nice. Typical Canadian in their love of their fans and their craft. The layering is her Brittney Army, she tracks and overlaps a lot like Mr. Hollens does. Grant is absolutely one of the best metal scream gods there is. He has almost a 2 pitch sound, you can actually hear that high register regular tone under that beastly growl, it's insane how good he is.
