Glad to see this video, a pi 5 and Argon One NVME case are exactly what I asked for for my birthday! I've been using a pi 4 and an Argon One SATA case for some time now, and have been very happy with the setup.

The sata case was ok , it was limited by the usb3 , and it didn’t like multiple tasks , this new one is silly fast , I ran the pi benchmarks and got 60k score

I have the same case for my pi 4 as well. I accidentally purchased an NVMe drive not realizing my case was SATA. Bought a SATA drive and an NVMe enclosure then found Argon has an NVMe base available… it’s all still bottle necked through the usb3 port though so seeing them use PCIe for the 5 is wonderful

Thanks for the demo, I have one arriving tomorrow. A little hint on the thermal transfer, just peel off one side, apply that side to the component then it is easier to peel off the other side.

I can't believe Argon didn't use an offset ribbon cable for the PCIE connection. As it is, the SD slot is blocked completely when connected.
@MicroChipz
@MicroChipz 7 месяцев назад
I suppose they think you wont be using a sd card anymore as using the NVME is faster.

@@MicroChipz nice to have the option to use it still.
@miltonb4522
@miltonb4522 7 месяцев назад
@@r0galikno real point though as the unit will be closed up during use. Also, the bottom folds out of the way giving some access to the card, it’s not as it if loops over like the Geeekpi hats do. The Pimoroni hat does have an offset cable, but it’s also mounted securely at all times and still allows access to everything. The Argon case must be opened up for any access other than GPIO anyway so why make it anymore complex?
@ivolol
@ivolol 7 месяцев назад
Pi foundation screwed that up by putting the card reader right underneath the cable socket. As well as they refuse to use USB Power Delivery to get power to the Pi so you need all these non-standard power supplies that exceed the amps for 5V USB power, stupid.
@r0galik
@r0galik 7 месяцев назад
@@ivolol USB PD is worse for devices that don't have a battery, as the negotiation can fail if the hardware is not properly thought out (like Rock 5b, for example). Not using PD is reasonable, but what's not reasonable is having a 5 amp power supply. 12 volt 2 amp would do the same and be much easier for people to replace or improve. But they wanted to save a few cents on power conversion lol.

They should've utilized the screw holes that are on the raspberry pi to connect the daughter board to.

Hi, thanks for the great video. I have got exactly this rig, but with a Crucial 1TB SSD. After I loaded up the normal RPi OS, I installed the Argon scripts for controlling the fan and power button and everything works fine - fan cuts in and out as the temp rises and falls. However, I got this rig specifically to run Home Assistant OS. So, having loaded the HA OS, all works fine, but because the OS is a hybrid, the Argon scripts won't load and run, hence now way to control the fan etc. I currently have an RPi4 in an Argon M.2 V2 case and use an custom integration "Active Cooling and Active Linear Cooling" addon to control the fan which works brilliantly. Sadly the addon is not compatible with v3 of the Argon case, so at the moment, whilst I can run HA on the RPi 5 in the V3 case, I have no way to control the fan. Any ideas?

Good video but I do have a question. Why would one use the Pi Imager Tool to flash the MicroSD, just to boot the ready to use system up from it and run the Pi Imager or similar on it again with the NVMe drive instead of just flashing to the NVMe directly and perhaps resizing partitions if needed with something like GParted?
@MicroChipz
@MicroChipz 3 дня назад
There are many ways of doing this . As this was a new unit and I didn’t know how and if it worked I wanted to do step by step so any issues could be found . This was just the way I know and wanted to put a fresh operating system onto the drive .
@DimebagDan81
@DimebagDan81 7 месяцев назад
No need to reinstall the OS with RPi Imager fresh on the M.2 drive if you've already got it booted from the MicroSD... Just use the SD Copier and copy it directly to the M.2 drive. Power down, remove MicroSD card, reboot, done. Flashing a clean install to the M.2 directly from a clean install on the MicroSD is a waste of time causing you to have to repeat setup steps unnecessarily.
@MicroChipz
@MicroChipz 7 месяцев назад
Yeh this is another easy way of doing it .
@DimebagDan81
@DimebagDan81 7 месяцев назад
Another unnecessarily convoluted way of doing it, yes... The SD Copier application is built into the Raspberry Pi OS for good reason: exactly this use lol. It saves you from having to reconfigure everything when moving to a new drive
@MicroChipz
@MicroChipz 7 месяцев назад
Well for my use i wanted a fresh OS anyway, so this for me was not a problem , as i used the 64 bit os .

Good video. Could you do one with this case monitoring the temperature during some stress tests?
@MicroChipz
@MicroChipz 7 месяцев назад
The case does get toasty when under stress , sits about 40 to 50 degrees , putting the Argon fan control software on works and keeps it from overheating.

@luigiprovencher
@luigiprovencher 6 месяцев назад
You need to be able to change boot devices from the raspberry pi itself without having to rely on the Micro SD cards and the operating system. Which you can only do from Raspbian I believe because there's no option to change the boot device in Ubuntu. Having to switch between the SD card is a pain in the ass and time consuming. You should be able to do it from NETBOOT at the very least so that after you're done installing the OS from NETBOOT you can just change the boot Device to the Device that you installed it on because when I've tried installing an OS from NETBOOT it doesn't just reboot into the new OS and the Device you installed it on it just goes back into booting from/to NETBOOT.
@luigiprovencher
@luigiprovencher 6 месяцев назад
You have to rely on Raspbian no offense to raspbian but I don't want to use it as my main desktop or daily driver so it's pretty much just for recovery or rescue purposes.
