If I had unlimited resources, the recording gear I’d choose would be so boring. Give me 32 Britstrips and a Presonus StudioLive with 32 mic pres. Give me all the Lewitt and Austrian Audio mics and some 57s,7B, Telefunke M82s, and Royer R-121s. I would massively spec out a computer (think Threadripper Pro 7995WX, 1tb of DDR5 ram, etc). I’d have all the virtual instruments and effects. I’d get a Trinoff. But for instruments and such, well… For keyboards/synths I’d go with a Yamaha U3 and CFX, 16 voice Moog One, 3rd Wave 61 key, Hydrasynth Deluxe, Korg Opsix, and the Buchla Easel. For drums, I’d go DW collector series maple shells, the entire Pearl Free Floating snare line, and the entire Meinl Classics Custom set of cymbals. For guitars/bass, I’d get all the standard PRS, Gibson, and Fender, guitars and basses. For guitar amps, I’d go with Revv G120s, Fender ‘65 Twin Reverb, PRS HDRX 100w head, and a Vox AC130. For guitar cabs, I would get 4 Harley Benton 4x12s and 4 1x12s. I’d load them up with each speaker being different. While there are clearly more odds and ends to be had, I think that pretty much covers the major equipment

Definitely 1 piece of gear I'd prioritize would be an actual Fairchild 670 stereo comp... I'd put some of that unlimited budget into hiring some of the best session players on earth... Keeping them on my speed dial.... 😁😎

A dream studio…. 🤔 Big tracking rooms, a shitload of instruments (imagine a warehouse) at least 21 more rooms, I’ll be in studio 22 😂 A couple of mastering studios. A in-house vinyl press, cassette tape and cd production facilities. A shitload of analog gear and the most important thing of all: I would start a worldwide streaming service and pay artists a dollar per stream and get all the major labels go broke in no time. And anyone that wants a commercial gets shot onsite 😂

I really like Baby Audio's stuff. My favourite amongst the bunch is Spaced Out. There will definitely be a console at the heart of it all, either a Neve or an SSL. The most important aspect will be integration with the computer because I will still work with a DAW. It would be Atmos ready. I'm sure there will be other elements I would like to add here and there, but I am a simple man and I would like to be as simple as possible. But whatever I get, I want it to be the best and reliable and flexible (so yes RME converters will play a role =] ). The amusing thing is I would like to have a full set of UAD Sphere/Hemisphere microphones, some kind of Roland hybrid acoustic-electric drum kit (and with it use Earthwork DK7 set of microphones) and (if it exists) some kind of amp-head that will actually be a controller to the virtual amp. The reason for all of it is I want to have a lot of different options without having to have a shed for various drum kit elements, microphones, amp/cabinet combos, etc. And yes, this is even with an unlimited budget ;) =] That said, Vangelis is my musical father figure and I would probably going for things he had, particularly when he had Nemo Studios in London. And to be clear, this is just the tracking/mixing side of things. Synthesizers are another thing =] (Yes, if I could translate my plug-in purchases to assets, I would probably be an upper middle class bloke. No regrets here ... and I expect two fingers coming from Paul ;) =] ) The rest of it ... I honestly really like to have a studio in the countryside (think Real World). So yes, it will be residential and there will be great food. And definitely all the "boring stuff".

I remember drooling over a Studer A800 at a music technology show in London about 35 years ago. At the time it was worth more than my house. I’d probably have a couple of them, fed from a nice console…and I’d probably just sit and watch the reels go round 😂

Ha! I’ve always wanted a studio big enough to have a car in it! And I think it would have to be a Fiat Multipla for two reasons… firstly it’s the fugliest car ever made, and secondly it’s got three seats in the front so you can sit in the middle 😂 I’d want a Nova in it too, of course - the worlds first Trinnov calibrated car!

There is a science to making good coffee, and just like awful mixes that don't translate compared to a good mix with depth and clarity, layers etc, same with coffee. Lots of coffee drinkers have never actually experienced a properly brewed coffee to actually know, kinda similar to consumers out there thinking Dre Beats are the best headphones lol

Good episode guys'. I watched it all the way through and it's nice to see the growth in perspective. I second that thought of living your best life and doing what you love. As far as gear goes I've been absolutely loving the Ex Machina Pulsars. I have the drivers sitting about 2 feet from my ears which I found to help minimize desk reflection and the room. I also invested heavily in GIK bass traps all around the room which has made a huge difference in sound quality throughout the entire room. Every day I'm amazed at how good it sounds. I don't regret spending the money one bit. However, like you guys I would absolutely love to try out all kinds of different speakers and headphones, gear, etc. Audio is just so much fun.

A question for Paul: in Atmos numbering as x.y.z, I understand y to be the mono LFE channel. If that's the case, then how is it possible for y to be any number other than 1? I know you can have multiple subwoofers in a room, but they'll all be part of the LFE channel, right?
@WorkingAudioTools
@WorkingAudioTools 3 месяца назад
They will be part of the LFE but the number is in relation to the amount of speakers. 7.2.4 You would have 2 subs in a setup in order to distribute the bass more evenly which would result in more headroom and less overall bass distortion. You can use a Y cable and split the mono signal to both subs. That way both subs don't need to be as loud, thus meaning more headroom and less distortion. This method is purely for distributing the load evenly to create more headroom Kali advised me to put in 2 subs but I only had budget for one. I may change my mind at some point but I'm really happy with my room
@richardpretorius4929
@richardpretorius4929 3 месяца назад
@@WorkingAudioTools I thought the numbers denoted the channels that the renderer was placing the objects in, so that the numbers can change based on your room instead of in the case of 5.1 or whatever - but I guess I'm wrong about that? I thought this because on Dolby's site they list possible layouts and all of them are x.y.z where y is always 0 or 1. I also thought this because if you look at Dolby accredited studios, they list their Atmos rooms as x.1.z even though they often have multiple subwoofers. For example, Blackbird Studio C is 9.1.6 even though they have six subs, and Sweetwater Studio B is 9.1.4 but they have four subs. I totally understand your point with multiple subwoofers in the same room, and I totally see the value of that in a mono context (but only in a mono context like with an LFE). Thanks for the reply and all the best with your health, Paul! Note: I had to repost this because the comment initially disappeared, I think because I included URLs.
@WorkingAudioTools
@WorkingAudioTools 3 месяца назад
Depends on who you speak to. Dolby use always use 1 to define the LFE channel where others like distributors will use x.y.z to depict the amount of speakers. I prefer it the speaker way so I know exactly what type of setup they have and how many subs are being used specifically for the LFE. If it's 7.1.4 I know it's 7 surround, 1 sub LFE & 4 heights, if it's 9.2.6 I know it's 9 surround, 2 sub LFE & 6 heights. Makes things less confusing especially as you don't know if there are subs being utilised for low end extension for other speakers. You could have 5 subs where 2 is LFE and the other 3 are low end extension for the front 3. Technically from dolby that is a .1 where if you have 2 subs via Y cable dealing with LFE, a seperate sub for low end extension of each floor speaker (so 7) then it's still technically a .2 as its 2 subs dealing with the LFE with the rest acting as low end extension for the speakers. So we have 9 subs in total but it's a 7.2.4 because the 2 refers specifically to the subs outputing the LFE That's why I prefer this way of numbering x.y.z so I know which subs are for LFE and which subs are low end extension primarily for certain speakers

I can still take back my Ferrofish A32pro. Should I take back my Ferrofish A32pro and wait until September and get the new RME M-1620 Pro? I currently do not use all 32 channels of the Ferrofish A32pro. Please advise. I have to make a choice by Monday.

I have the same rme interface with 2x Ffp16 and can’t see the need for much better then that on multi channel. So I’d say crack and don’t dwell on soec minutia. There’s far bigger things to worry about 😂

I pretty much have my dream studio and gear. If money were no object of course I'd buy something silly like a matched pair of U47's or something equally as ridiculous. I have vintage Neumann mics, but I've never been so extreme as to try to find another matching mic to create a pair. Maybe I'd buy a room full of obscenely priced speakers, like those $100,000 per pair of Focal monitors.

@@UncleBenjs That's true. I need to correct my first post. I do have several matched pairs of vintage km84's, and a pair of km56's but they're not technically matched. I was speaking towards only large diaphragm mic pairs.

Big studios were a thing back when it was still possible to make decent money producing music and when energy consumption was less of a concern . Also a bigger percentage of pop music involved recording bands not just programming stuff in DAWs . A few years ago there was a little bit hope for bigger studios because of atmos but it didn't work out as planned , the general audience completely ignored it . Apple music by being able to loose money on distributing atmos for the same monthly fee didn"t managed to improve their market share with people wanting to get atmos and music is still massively distributed in stereo . Soptify can't do atmos at the same price and they know that they would get very few customers willing to pay double the price to get atmos .
