I'm a retired hobby cutter and primarily pick on dead standing / down wood for quick turnaround. The bags are an interesting topic. As you and the customer(ha-ha) were unloading the bag, I was waiting for some mice or some other critter to come jumping out of there. Worse case would be a snake trying to get out and of course that would probably happen to a female customer...LOL! Not good for sales.

I am a consumer and a seller. I exclusively use those bags. I split into a conveyor that dumps into the bag. I then use a mini excavator to move them onto a pallet. For my personal use around fall I bring the bags over to my firewood shed and stack it in there. For clients that I sell to I use the mini excavator to place the bag in a dump trailer. I place a chain in the loops at the bottom and once its in the dump trailer I use that chain to flip it upside down. I get my wood from tree service companies and local contractors that are clearing land. I take the wood they give me and use the mini excavator to stack the lengths and won't cut them up until the following year.

when I was young, my 5 acre property furnished all the firewood I needed each winter. About 10 years ago, I started buying some, about 60% of my needs, and resorted to cutting smaller trees to lessen my labor. Then a couple of years ago....when I hit 70, I resorted to buying my firewood already split and dried, but I go pick it up myself....actually, I drop off my trailer at the yard, and I get a call when it is ready for me to pick up (less handling for me), then I bring it home and stack it....and if it needs to be split, I split it. So as I have gotten older, I have both some minor health problems that affected my stamina, and my back cannot handle all the heavier lifting. So I have become more and more dependent on folks in the firewood business. I do not mind that because my time on earth is getting shorter and shorter, so I do not have to spend so much time gathering and have more time for my leisure.

I'm a consumer, we only have one wood burner. Seven years ago when we moved here we had a van load of seasoned rounds delivered and then I won 60 old pallets for free which I cut up to build firewood racks in the cellar, the offcuts became firewood. In the last seven years we have been given used pallets and wood from about 4 or 5 smallish trees which I've bucked up and split and my wood store in the cellar is full to overflowing. I've been very lucky in gaining trees and pallets and have given three neighbours the occasional load of cut, split and seasoned firewood.

I cut my own firewood but then I don't burn much firewood at all my fireplaces are natural gas. As for me if I cut a lot of firewood there is no way I would bag it. The sun never hits it and the air don't blow through those bags much at all. That is why that firewood had mold on it and I am sure that wood is far from being any drier than it was when it was put in that bag. If it was me I would stack all my firewood just like Joe does at Ohio wood burner, who I think is a very honest and a very good man.

Hey Dan! Love your channel, very entertaining and informative. I am a home owner who cuts firewood for my own personal use as I have 2 wood stoves in my house. I live in Southern Ontario so temps don't really get crazy cold during winter. I store my wood in IBC totes as this way it goes from splitter to my side door once seasoned, and with minimal handling. The down side, is here in Southern Ontario the wood guys are buying up all the IBC totes and driving prices up. A recent auction sale they were going for over $100 each and those were not food safe totes, which is totally outrageous to me. Keep up the great videos ! Cheers

I live on a state highway in an area with many rental cabins so I put up a small bundle stand. I also put out some stacked full IBC totes of good oak firewood, and both the bundles and totes have sold OK. I have 20 acres of woods and so far the trees have come down faster in the wind and ice than I process them. I do not use much of the wood except when the power was out for several days. I bought some of the bags and have not unloaded them yet. One thing to note though is I have an open pile I split two years ago, and as I am getting down into it I have some of the mold problems. I am in SE Ohio, but it has been a pretty damp and wet couple of years. So it may be more than just the bags being the problem for mold and mushroom growth.

We’ve supplemented/heated with wood heat for 43 years, luckily we’ve never had to buy firewood. We always hustled wood when it was available and sometimes when inconvenient with hot temps.

I buy firewood in bags like that. I pick up the bags in a trailer which is the only way I can move them around and empty them where and when I want to at home. The firewood producer fully seasons his logs before splitting directly from his processor into the bags and his bags are stored under cover in a massive carport arraignment until sale. Clever on his part because he never touches the wood by hand. Most of his logs are seasoned where the trees grew and he only brings them into his woodyard as he processes. I think most consumers appreciate all the scrap pieces because we use them as kindling. At least I do. Individual sticks would probably range in size between 10 to 16" and I doubt anyone cares because you're buying by volume which must be about a cubic metre. The only stuff I can buy or know of locally is iron bark gum which is about half as heavy again as your oak so it's not that easy to move it around. I watch a few US firewood channels and from my observations most of what firewood producers stress over consumers don't care about. Basically if the bag is full and it's dry and burns then I'm over it. ps. There are no scrap bins or cookie piles in Australian woodyards. (they do separate out any bark though). edit. The bags I get can be opened from the bottom because they are only laced up so if you delivered yourself and had some way of picking the full bags up then you could easily empty them and take your bag with you to use again.

Firewood consumer and producer. Never have I ever purchased firewood outside of just seeing what the competition was selling. We use bundles, not bags…or any kind. You’d have to deliver the bag in a dump trailer or something. I don’t think you could man handle a full bag out of a truck bed. Maybe you could? Not sure what a full bag would weigh. I’ve had customers want an IBC tote delivered but they have no way to unload it from the truck. Logistics with the bags, I would think, would be problematic too. I like your thinking though.

I actually found it easier to pick out of the bag instead of picking up after being dumped out. I wouldn't have been able to dump it into the shed so the tossing in part would've still needed to happen.

I use my tractor loader bucket. With a tooth bar to scoop a bucket at a time into it. And then take it and stack from the bucket. Way less bending up and down. So, I like my wood dumped in a pile when delivered. I buy probably 75% of the wood I use. I use 1 1/2 to 2 cords per year.

Hey Craig....thanks! That canopy is a ShelterLogic brand. Think it is 12x20x10. It has held up great for 2 years now. I do knock snow off it regularly in the winter to keep it from sagging too much but I've been very happy with it. I also have it in a somewhat shaded area to keep UV damage down.

I go to a place down the road from me and get wood for $10 for a 5x8 utility trailer load sometimes. But I usually will get my wood in the woods or on Facebook marketplace for free.

I would be quite unhappy to receive moldy wet wood like from the first bag. Not to mention, how do you get these bags off your truck and into homeowner's yard or drive? I'm both a producer and a consumer. I don't sell, though- just an end user.

@@davidpeel4509 Do they drop it off so it smashes to bits when it hits the pavement or how do they do that? Perhaps you go and pick it up from the producer. Does the producer wholesale to a retailer and then you go to the retailer? In the USA, the normal method is for the producer to dump it out loose on the consumer. Thank you for describing what is likely a better method.

@@jakebredthauer5100 the crates don't get smashed on delivery, sometimes they use pump trucks with tail lifts, other times, small crane,and delivery onto driveway.i suspect they are delivered to our island via containers,then shop sells on.

I wood like to start a roadside stand, but I never seem to have time to get more wood cut than I need for myself. I burn about 6 to 7 full cords each year in my wood furnace in my basement. I probably burn about a cord in the outside fire pit, but I try to burn all my scraps and undesirable wood in that. I have 10 acres of woods that I cut all my firewood.

A suggestion 🤔 (make a survey of producers versus consumers of firewood) As for myself I process my own firewood and my overflow is for sale. There's not enough money into it firewood processing for me to quit my full-time job 🤮

I use one square meter big bags which contain 80% of a cord (4'x8'x16''), I store them on pallets and bring them to my garage with my tractor's forks, once on the garage floor I push them inside with my pickup or ATV, once depleted I replicate the process. I use a small wood processor which dumps the split wood directly in the bag. Minimal manipulation, I hate cording wood.

They are advertised as such...although I think to get a face cord in they need to be completely full without the top folded in like I had them.

@@garylaszewski7380 I was only making the point about the size of the bags needing to be larger to accommodate the airspace associated with loose stacking. One good thing about those bags is they do not require hand stacking. Loose stacking promotes drying.

If those bags have some molt that might not be a good thing to do, to use them for delivering to people that might have an allergy to mold.

If a customer has an allergy to mold...I would most likely suggest they find some natural gas to heat with. Unlike the internet has tried to convince the masses. Not all mold is dangerous by any means. I personally have alot of allergies and have never had an issue with burning any type of wood.

I myself use three sizes of big bags for the delivery of firewood, a quarter cubic meter, half cubic meter and a cubic meter. (I have no idea how to convert that to cord) ;o)) I charge two hundred fifty euros for a cubic meter of mixed wood. and for a cubic meter of oak wood I charge three hundred euros

I wanted to try the smaller bags that fit on a dolly...I've seen them available in Canada and the UK but haven't found any in the US and to import them adds far too much $$$ to the cost.

@@Back40Firewood some big bag traders do not charge shipping costs above a certain amount. I would email them. then you immediately know how or what. I sell on average between fifteen hundred and eighteen hundred of these small half cubic meters of big bags per year

How would you deliver a bag? Haul a tractor and trailer with you?

One way is to unload piece-by-piece by hand if the customer does not have a forklift. Another idea I had is a floorless trailer such as is used to move large propane tanks. They are open at the back and you back up over the pallet. From there you can raise and lower the pallet.

I've seen people who have a trailer with a crane on it to deliver/drop off. I've also seen a dump truck bed just dump the bag. It is tied shut at the top so it slides off and lands on it's side.

I know that loaded pallets can be dragged. If a person had a good ramp I suspect that the pallet could be dragged down the ramp and across the ground.

Maybe next time do a time of unloading from a ibc tote might be quicker since you won’t be messing with the bag

I think it would be quicker, but with just one person....otherwise we both wouldn't be able to reach into the front of the tote at the same time (assuming the front was cut out). We would be waiting for the other person to get a piece out. With the bag we were both able to grab pieces at the same time.

The only positive is see with a bag of wood like that is clean up. I am a producer of wood, and don't consume much others then a firepit. I do cut wood for a few people because they have health issues. To me it's the right thing to do.

Yeah that is the problem. The places I've seen use them have like an unloading crane or a pallet jack gimmick to unload them....or I've even seen just a dump bed on a pickup that dumps the whole bag...so it just slides out.

Regardless of the result, you made a critical error in assuming these bags would be dropped of infront of your house. They get moved with a palett jack kinda dolly right into your garage or backyard if it is paved. Watching you unloading I realized: here in europe, where bags are used more (still a rather small percentage in comparison) the pieces of wood are MUCH smaller. The length is 10 or 14 inches usually (there is bigger, but those are most common) and the splits are more like 4 inches, much more like your bundle firewood. When you account for all that, that might be why your results aren't so great compared to the big producers around here. I know a company that literally only uses those kind of bags (theirs have actual mesh on 2 sides tho). IBC totes are still the best, and used widely here, too.

@@Deutschehordenelite Europe seems to be "way ahead" of the US when it comes to the firewood business. I've seen videos of their wood delivery with IBC totes. Just amazing! I've tried to introduce this concept to the popular RU-vidrs in the US, but established wood guys cant "change horses in the middle of the stream". The Innolift device is expensive ($8k - $10k). There is a required starting investment to get a bunch of $30 used totes! But, I suggested an initial "one time" customer fee that would cover that investment...for "elite customers" who don't want to bother with piling firewood with all the mess. When the customer calls for a refill, you would need another ($30) full tote "standing by". But once your inventory starts rolling/churning, you'd have enough empty totes standing by to refill without buying any more. The beauty of the totes, is once you hand fill them (or loose fill them with a conveyor) you never touch the wood again! If one has a wood processor with a conveyor, you never touch the wood even once! The US guys don't "get it". They have "a thing" for hand piling firewood, and not having a bunch of totes cluttering up their wood yard. They likely don't want to spend time unloading empty returned totes from a trailer. But, ones tractor (with forklifts) handles this chore. A nice 30 foot flatbed "deck over" trailer would be the best for hauling the totes, since it could be unloaded/loaded from 3 sides of the trailer. New wood businesses, who study the "whole picture" before investing in equipment, are the ones who would likely go with IBC totes. Also, Europe seems to have the best efficient wood furnaces/stoves. @@garylaszewski7380 Yeah I think due to the high competition here that people are forced to optimise the process or be pushed out of the market. There are differences obviously still, but the quality is at the upper end, compared to what I see on some channels. Like you would never see a load with a bunch of debris or never call them again - because you have the options- Thanks for your comment, gonna watch the video now!

As for the bags....I do not like them, and here is why....I like to see what I am buying and if I got a bag will that amount of moldy wood, I would let the seller know that I was not pleased....maybe I am picky, but it is MY money I am spending! HA HA
