Unloading Firewood Bags - Getting the Wood Out. After my video on bringing the big firewood bags into the woodshed, many asked how easy it was getting the wood out. There's a couple approaches to take, dig the wood out piece by piece or dump the bag...I try both.
New videos every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and the Back 40 Live Stream every Friday night at 8:00 pm central.

I used to work at a very large printing plant while I raised cattle, sold firewood, and grew 200 acres of hay. When the printing plant closed, I was able to buy all the 4’X5’X4’ steel tote bins (over 200 of them) they used for scrap paper handling, for all the wood block storage, processing, selling and storage of firewood. Keep and eye open for any printing plant to close, and buy up these sturdy steel cans with heavy wheels on them, and fork lift pockets, for wood production. 🤠👍

Shifty, we have had no 0° temps yet. One thing i did with seed bags was in my fork i cut a hole to fit a 2" or 2-5/16" ball. This way when you grab that strap, it holds against the ball. When you dump the bag, the ball prevents it from coming off the forks. Nice video. See you on the livestream.

I see where The Morgans are using those bags, he splits and uses a conveyer to fill them. Hey Dan, put your paper note into a zip lock bag to keep it dry. Why not just use the forks on the bottom of the pallet, and tilt the whole load. You might save the bag from ripping. Stay Warm and Safe in the Wood Yard.

An engine hoist mounted on the ceiling, with a set of chains and hooks would unload those bags pretty quickly. If you wanted to do it manually, you could use a heavy duty pulley with a block and tackle or maybe even hook up a block and tackle with a winch. Something to think about while you’re watching the vortex freeze everything except your spirit.

Outdoors with the Morgans and Hometown Acres use conveners off the end of the splitter to fill the bags. Check it out.
@bwillan
@bwillan 3 года назад
Hometown Acres uses IBC totes. OWTM just recently demonstrated using their 24' conveyor to load a 1 face cord firewood bag that was held open by their tractor. I think that is the way to go for loading. However, I think that the unloading part is still more work than just using an IBC tote. I think for this firewood operation (Back 40) the IBC tote option is better.
@neilmeyers5519
@neilmeyers5519 3 года назад
@@bwillan I can see firewood bags being more convenient for storage at home (load directly from a conveyor and store in a shed or cover) but totes are way better to deliver to a customer (skid steer to a pickup and drive). I must have missed why HA and OWTM are doing what they do. Chris at In The Woodyard does everything with physical labor - saw, split, stack, load, unload with no totes or bags - and handles lots more wood than the others.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 3 года назад
We don't have a conveyor, but the IBC totes work out nicely (we've done a few videos on them). I think the bags are nice too. I don't think my little John Deere 2210 would lift the forks high enough to lift them up or dump them.

hi there well i would have to say getting wood to your boiler is a handling night mare .dont know how to help you out . you are smart and will come up with a easyier way . the handling is what eats you up . might be time for a wolf ridge convayor . now with those bags . could you have a conveyor drop the wood right next to the boiler . split into the loader bucket dump in conveyor then to the boiler . just trying to think of something to help . by the way where do you get those great looking pallets . be cool but stay warm john
@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood 3 года назад
Oh yeah the getting the wood to the boiler in as few touches as possible is always the goal....lol....but when I built the shed I didn't think I'd ever have the moving abilities I have now...hahaha....so just have to adapt. The pallets are from my brother-in-law who owns a trucking company, downside is he no longer gets them so what I have is all I'll have.
@timnash6870
@timnash6870 3 года назад
TIM from Canada I am surprised that you have not built yourself some sort of a box to put your word in instead of throwing it on the floor.. it would be easy enough get yourself 5 pallets... put the one pallet on the floor and put the IV around it so it is a box with the one pallet P in the floor and you can use some sort of award strips to hold everything together....

I'm shooting for 2/3rds of a cord burned in 10 days at this rate, maybe more. I'm burning some premium (it really is) poplar so it is only lasting 56% as long as premium oak. Yeah if one needs to dump out the storage, the bags at least potentially have more options to get the job done with those straps at the bottom, but you would need more vertical room and maybe a way to get the pallet out of the way so you could quick clip the bottom straps to a short chain running to the back of the pallet fork. And make sure the cinch is tied back out of the way so it doesn't get under the wood coming out and cinch itself up as you lifted the dumped bag. I wonder if you can lift high enough to still tilt the pallet forks down enough into something like a trailer? Maybe you'd be limited to just doing it out in the open on the ground; which defeats the purpose of putting firewood in the bags in the first place! I'm thinking IBC totes would work best for me just for my odds and ends pile because it doesn't stack and what's left now is covered in ice and snow and hard to get at even though it's on concrete. The big snow bucket works pretty good but similar to your situation, it's kinda too big to get under the roof to dump out really close so it goes on the ground a bit further out than it should.
@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood 3 года назад
I doubt I'll ever 'need' to dump those bags out in the shed there, was mostly just demonstrating it as an option. When I use them I'll just pull out as I need it per fill up...just like pulling off a stack or from a tote.😀 👍 🍻

Hi Dan - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I'm either missing a very obvious point or perhaps the cold has gotten into your brain! Why introduce yet another wood handling step by emptying the bag? Why not just fill your boiler straight from the bag and save a heap of time and energy. Two other ideas, I have a quantity of short ropes so that when I fold a bag I tie it, thereby making further management of it easy. Secondly, spray a reference number on each bag, have a 5 X 4 card for each and record on that whatever you want - wood type, split sizes, when split etc. so you can stocktake from the comfort of your highly organised office. Now get into the house, have a coffee (perhaps even an Irish coffee) and warm up.

@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood 3 года назад
Hey Big Rodders, yeah I was mostly just demonstrating how getting the wood out of those bags works. I wouldn't be able to ever get the bag close enough to the boiler to just unload right into it. Even with the wood just stacked in the shed I toss what I need over by the boiler, then loosely stack it up by the door before I throw it all in. If I walked back & forth getting piece by piece from the stack or the bag then the shed fills up with smoke with the boiler door open...lol But also I wanted to empty out that last bag so I can start getting the wood off the driveway and use those bags to put it in....and it's also entirely possible the cold has gotten to my brain as well....hahahahaha 😀 👍 🍻
