You're a beast. Enjoy it. Appreciate it. Don't waste a minute of it. Looking forward to seeing that wall. Oh yeah, and while you're doing stuff like this. Play Bob Segar's Like a Rock. Signed: Mrs. Grumpy Old Man 😉

I brought home a grand total of two ties and just those were a bitch to move by myself. Couldn't imagine moving that many in one day...

It was the hardest thing i’ve done in an extremely long time. I’m so glad i didn’t have to load them by hand also haha

I just installed a small retaining wall of rail road ties on the current house I’m renovating on my channel. They are very heavy that’s for sure. I’m glad that project is done.

I feel every bit of your pain. 50 yrs ago when I was a young buck like yourself I set up a mobile home on property with little money. I got about 15 RR ties free for hauling. Hardest days work I did in a long while. I used them for footing pads. They never rot, probably still there for all I know.

I am currently out in there yard hauling them around. Definitely heavier than i expected hahaha

If you're going to be doing a lot more of those, you need to work smarter not harder, save yourself for other projects. Build a system with some old wheelbarrow wheels to put the tie on one end and some sort of a hook on the other so you can wheel them to where you want to go. There may even be something you could put together from like Harbor Freight or somewhere. If you can do that, you'll save your back. Believe me, you'll thank me when you get to be my age. I've had 3 back surgeries because I worked harder not smarter. I believe what I'm talking about is called using a fulcrum or something like that. You use something that bears the weight while you use leverage to move it.

I would certainly look at the retaining wall bricks at Home Depot / Menard's, they work great and you can add as you go have them delivered at HD for almost nothing. That is what I did and could not be happier with them. I replaced the old RR ties with the brick. Bulk buy and get them cheaper. 500 of them cost about 1000 and HD will deliver for 89. Just for a baseline and you might be able to get them cheaper in a larger bulk buy.
@marchingmoto
@marchingmoto 2 месяца назад
That was my original plan, they’re just over twice as expensive as the railroad ties

2:00, "Trying to not over exert myself" More and more people these days are quite soft. It genuinely makes me feel good to know you are out there carrying railroad ties around. As for people saying you will feel it when you are 40....the truth, I'm in my 50's and all the "lift with your back" guys have me over for help because I was given advice on how to lift and then even more importantly always followed it. 1. Lift with your legs 2. Keep your shoulders square to your hips while holding weight. 3. Apply strength slowly and smoothly. I gave a thumbs up, wish I could do 10. Also, watch your neck doesn't get cresote burns. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for all the advice and for the positivity! I’ve always felt the same way about work. I’ve gone to the gym 3 times a week for 5 years to condition myself to handle this kind of stuff

if you're still working on that railroad tie retaining wall... take out that tree first... then even if that retaining wall is small, there's still pressure on it so put some anchors in it (you'll thank yourself later on)

Long long ago when I had to move railroad ties I used a dolly, tied them on with roping rolled them into position and put them all around a dog run that had barbed wire at the bottom so that the dogs couldn't dig under the fence now they're completely buried under the ground and it works they keep digging at the fence and they keep hitting something and I think they're going to finally give up.
@marchingmoto
@marchingmoto 2 месяца назад
That’s a very good idea. I actually have a dolly out here i may use it when i start moving these to the retaining wall
