Great video I learned I will be able to update my kitchen without having to buy new cabinets at some point in the future. Companies that sell specific cabinet fronts for Ikea. That's brilliant

Great video! One thing you should mention is that the cover panels (gables) that you need to buy to enclose the fridge and make it look built-in or to cover cabinet sides can be different thicknesses depending on the style of the doors and drawer fronts you pick. Most cover panels are 1/2” thick but the 26 x 36 and 36 x 96 appliance panels are 5/8” thick and the cover panels for the Brokhult, Ringult and Hittarp styles are 3/4” thick. The 1/2” panels will be good to use for fillers or to cover cabinet sides but are not supposed to be used for countertop support. As to Ikea eliminating the shallow pantry cabinets, can you cut the top, bottom and side panels of a 24” deep pantry cabinet to a shallower depth and still have the cabinet box be structurally sound? Also, I wish Ikea offered full height doors for their tall cabinets instead of us having to use a short door over a tall door (and then joining them together with a connection fixture for doors). Finally, could you do a video on all the other special accessories you might need in order to install your Ikea kitchen, like inner drawer fronts, the suspension rail, types of hinges, door dampers, push openers, reinforced ventilated top rails, ventilation grill, the fixture mount for doors and drawers and the galvanized corner hardware? How and where should we use these?

Hey Mark, we found that ikea still carries shallow pantry units but they don’t appear online. We found single cabinet boxes that were 90” tall, by 24” wide by 15” depth. I just installed two of these units and only found them while working with the kitchen design staff in the store. Thanks again for all your help!

I don't need to drill a door/drawer front cabinet any time soon but very interested in that jig 🤣 thank you for the good tips and influence 😉👍

I got my contractor that jig for Christmas! (And yes, it's a partly selfish gift because I know he'll be using it on my cabinets.)

I love your videos and your explanations. I would love to see videos using existing spaces in 1960s houses where the owners don't have to knock down walls and have to take into consideration existing doorways (to the dining room, basement, deck, etc.) It's really hard for me to envision it and I love the idea of IKEA becuase you can change the door styles when you get bored with your choice.

Updating my condo of over 17 years…still has it’s original kitchen which I updated appliances only for, not cabinets & counters, when I moved in. It’s a small, U shaped kitchen. I don’t need to break the bank for this home, that needs flooring too now, with a 25-30k kitchen renovation, so probably doing Ikea. I also like that it’s “systemized” for me, with one place. I love real wood, I’d spend that in a house, but not here. My neighbor, with very same condo, and who’s fussy with high-end taste, did an Ikea kitchen about 15 years ago…beautiful then & now. She did get top-end European appliances, and custom lighting. But her cabinetry was all Ikea…very nice, not cheap looking at all. I liked their designs back then better. Covid delayed me, I did like their designs better in 2019 when I started to plan for this than the bland, ultra modern looks now. Hoping I can still make it look more interesting with more cottage/character with some of their current options…I think they still have this look too.

Don’t know supply quantity, but I’m seeing the 15 (14.75) inch deep Sektion cabinets on Ikea US online at the moment. I think there was a time during the pandemic (as they struggled with suppliers being sick while at the same time experiencing unprecedented demand) that there was talk that they backed off shallow/less in demand frames in Sektion and Pax to hasten the manufacture of regular depth. As you pointed out, they do limit offerings, so who knows how long any model of something may last.

We have the 15" deep upper cabinets and they are fabulous! The 12" deep just dont quite fit some items. We had to do an emergency type rebuild 14 months ago so we could not go with Ikea cabinets. We have wellmade wood frames but I would have much preferred the Ikea 15"uppers and the bases with the hidden top drawer. They will certainly last until the 'style demand' shifts:-)

We are building a new house in SW Missouri. We're a few hours from the nearest IKEA, and we wish we could use their cabinets, but we don't have expert installers in our area. We're going the custom route. We will be doing IKEA Godmorgon vanities and one bathroom cabinet, because we absolutely loved the ones we put in when we did live near the store. Worst case scenario, we will install them ourselves, or ask our general contractor to do it, since we trust him. We will go to the store, purchase them, and inspect all the pieces before leaving. We had to exchange a couple of sinks before, and it will be a real pain going back. Man, I miss being able to go wander around whenever I liked.

Good luck! I just ordered mine last December but had a lot of items that were back ordered or not available. Im in Tulsa, OK and had to drive to Kansas City for some of the items in stock. For the last items that werent available to be shipped or at the nearest store, I was lucky to be able to get them in California, as I flew their for the holidays. I used my company's account with Southwest to ship the boxes back home.

I love your information! Have you ever modified ikea cabinets to create pocket doors for a hidden bar? Do you know if it’s as simple just using the right hardware?
@MTKDofficial
@MTKDofficial Год назад
I have not. I'm not sure it's "as simple", but I'm from the school that anything can be figured out and modified. I'd say if it can be done to any other cabinet, then an IKEA box wouldn't be much different.

I just did my kitchen renovation with Sektion cabinets and Voxtorp doors in Walnut. I am generally happy with it, but I have to admit that I am annoyed by the fact that I can see the white melamine cabinet box in between drawer fronts. Is there a hack for addressing this? Also, I thought this was going to be a video about all of the myriad of fittings and accessories that you can use with the Sektion cabinets AFTER they are installed (which is when one typically "unlocks the potential"). This was more of a "why or why not IKEA cabinets" video.

Easy, take a high res picture of your drawer fronts, and head down to your local sign shop. have them print the picture on vinyl wrap material in a repeating pattern and then remove your drawers and cover the white edges with it. Alternately you can pick a brown vinyl that closely matches your cabinet fronts, since you're only looking to hide the white. We just installed Ringhult high gloss white kitchen from Ikea, it's the nicest kitchen I've ever had.

Do you think the USA will ever go metric with their sizes or it'll be considered too cumbersome?

Mark our issue was never about the quality of ikea it was about not finishing our two kitchen orders after shipping 75% of the two orders and then telling us they could not ship us the last 25%. Quality was never our concern. 😉Please read the article you are referencing from CBC. Thanks. Tony Norman Gander NL. Great videos.

3:34 it’s important to distinguish quality from grade. I think you are referring to grade and not quality. Quality: is product complete, working, unblemished and according to the specs every time.

About 15 years ago, my friend ordered solid wood kitchen cabinets from IKEA, which my husband who was a contractor, installed. When it came time to install our new kitchen after our building burned down 10 years ago, IKEA no longer offered solid wood. Why, I don't know. Their kitchen cabinets we saw looked to be so cheaply made that we turned to a private cabinet maker. This was a forced kitchen renovation which insurance paid for, thereby saving us a lot of money, and I now have the kitchen of my dreams! In short, I will never recommend IKEA.

I don't like that you are excusing poor quality by saying some brands have their stories. Maytag, in particular USED to be high quality, but it lost the right to claim that some time ago. Toyota is the opposite. It used to have a very bad rep but now many of their products are top notch. Poor quality shouldn't be excused. It would be better just to state the fact. Ikea is good for what it is, but it isn't going to hold up like actual wood cabinets. On the other hand, you aren't spending what you would spend on wood cabinets, not by a long shot. If you don't mind replacing cabinets with chips and dings in ten years or so, then Ikea is a good choice. Rule of thumb for any purchase is buy the best quality you can afford. It will cost less in the long run.

Not sure why the strong dislike for Ikea in a few of these comments. The bottom line is that not everybody can afford 20, 30,000 or more on cabinets. I know several people that chose Ikea kitchens and to this day don’t have scratches or nicks. I also find that companies willing to offer long warrantees stand behind their products for a reason. You can’t say that about big box companies such as Home Depot. Their “warrantee” is a joke.

I just sold my house, with an Ikea kitchen. The house is 11 years old and the kitchen looks as brilliant as the day I installed it during construction. And that’s with hubby helping me in the kitchen, haha!
