Abi, I have followed all your instruction (same machine) - goodness, I had enough lint under the stitch cover to felt a baby blanket! I have ordered new blades and most essentially a magnetic screwdriver from that well known South American River, Cheers for such brilliant tutorials.
You always do such brilliant tutorials, plus it seems you read my mind because my overlocker is on the point of needing more than its usual brush, vac and oil and I was going to search your channel for servicing. Thank you
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. The first thing it showed me is that I am probably too generous with the oil. Tomorrow I shall give my overlocker a good clean, but I'd be surprised if it need oil.
Excellent, excellent, excellent video! Your instructions are quite clear and easy to understand. Thank you!!!! Even reading your replies have given me additional supportive information such as what oil to use. Wish you can give information about automobile repair too. Lol lol
I have a brother overlocker similar to yours and when it needs attention I will definitely be referring back to this video. I think I can do this. Wonderful. Thank you so very much. You have probably saved me from a lot of frustration.
Brilliant. Only problem, you can’t do too many repairs, this machine is made of a lot of plastic and cheap metal, so faults tend to become more frequent and worse.
Oh wow that was Sooooo helpful. I have just bought my brother 4234d and am shocked at the amount of duct I’ve created in just a few makes so I’m certain this will save a lot of money. In covid lockdown I bought a vintage singer 201k and 15k and stripped them down completely and refurbished them. I never dreamed I might actually be able to open up an overlocking machine too. Many thanks again. I love your Chanel.
Fantastic tutorial . I have a Bernette MO 234 made by Juki for Bernina . I am still using it . Bought from new in the late 1970's if I remember correctly. I am now looking at the Juki Mo 2500 .Which you have!
Thank you Abi for this tutorial. I’ve just purchased a janome overlocker (which I love) and is a far better quality overlooker.I boxed my brother to take for service. Now I have no need to payout to have it serviced. Brilliant detailed tutorial xx
Thank you Abi, my 25 -27 year old Janome 534D finally went in for a service during Lockdown in 2020 here in Australia. I believe now it only got a basic clean and I paid for my tension dials to be tightened (all dials are much higher 4 except one) and it cost me $150 Aust money or 76.56 British pounds. I hardly used it and the tension was out again. I didn't really take note or was I really aware at the time that should have recalibrated my overlocker back to 4. I was just happy it was 'fixed' Did they actually service it? My 29.5 year old Janome sewing machine also came back with the reverse still inoperable. The reverse is the only issue why I needed or got it serviced. After paying $120 Aust or 61.23 pounds I had to take it back and get them to 'fix' it 'again'. (I now know how to fix it myself) Thanks to you Abi I can now service and calibrate my Overlocker and sewing machine for free and not waste time and money on, as you British call them, Cowboys' ❤❤❤❤❤❤ your channel, all of your tutorial are fabulous. Much appreciated
You’re exactly the perfect example of how I was feeling whenever I sent my machines away. I don’t understand why companies take weeks and many months to repair a machine? Nonsense! If it were a bloke and his car, they’d be on it!! Janome, the company’s main repairman actually broke a component in my machine and didn’t repair what I asked to be fixed. I opened the machine when it returned and spotted the mistakes. I took photos and got a refund, however, they didn’t compensate me for the breakages. Another local, very popular man who I was surveying to enlist to help me with my increasing demand to repair machines, barely touched my machine when he serviced it. He failed on two accounts and left me with a dirty machine still skipping stitches! I’ve just recorded a video of a brother machine being serviced for over £100 and there are interesting, notable errors that tell me, nope, this was never serviced! I will be showing you how to service an embroidery machine. Look out for that! I’m so, so glad you’ve taken on the task to repair your own machine and I hope you don’t mind, I’m going to share your comment with viewers! Thank you x and very well done!
I was just thinking about buying this same machine, even though i know Brother's cheaper machines are not great, but funds do not allow for much more, right now. Is this worth buying for diferent types of fabric, or should i be looking for a different type that is longer lasting and better quality, like the Necchi DF4?
If you can buy the singer s14-78 from Lidl or Necchi from aldi they are amazing compared to this machine. The other one I have is the silver from Hobbycraft. X but this brother isn’t too bad. It’s just it’s overly expensive for what it is
Ms. Abi, this was a fantastic tutorial. Even though my overlocker is new (I went with the Singer heavy duty HD0405s), this will come in very handy when I get the husband to clean it.
Great tutorial. I think I will try and access the spring clip that threads the lower looper on my nechi. It’s always popping loose! I think it may need tightening. Wish me luck
This is a really helpful video, thank you so much for this. It's nice to see that we don't need to waste a lot of time and money to keep sewing. How often do you recommend doing a service?
Glad it was helpful! I generally keep my machine clean and when you feel like you can’t get a great result, then service. Machines vary due to their build quality, brother machines get worse very quickly and don’t repair well whereas a Juki or Baby lock may never need a calibration or repair, just a clean.
Hi Abi, I love your videos best detailed tutorial. I have a bernette b48 that I barely used but now I cannot turn the differential feed dial. It is stuck. Please help what should I do
You are so welcome! If you can open it up, you should oil the cams inside, however, your dealer should do this for free since the machine isn’t all that old. You also have a fit for purpose consumer protection. Machines from janome/Bernina (this is one of their collaboration machines) should not fail in this way. So you could stomp your feet at either manufacturer, your dealer, or you could try to fix it yourself or pay someone. I know what I would do. Good luck
Thank you, no cover locks yet. I’m looking at the Enspire atm. The air threading really is the easiest thing and you really can’t go wrong. Give it a bash but I am going over the air threading in detail very soon x so watch this space. You can do it! 💪🏾💪🏾
Is it possible to adjust the position of the knife and knife plate to change the stitch width? I have this overlocker, and the numbers on the dial are supposed to relate to millimetres, but never have. When you had the bottom left cover off, it looked like there might be a large springy thing (technical term) that would adjust this. You advice would be much appreciated.
Hey Tamsin, unfortunately not. You need a bit of length on the screw for stability. Unfortunately, Brother machines have arbitrary measures on their machines. I’ve had their £000’s machines and the measures aren’t calibrated true.
Thanks Abi. Good to know. I have been brave and taken off the cover to give it a good clean with renewed confidence. Thank you for this video - I’m about to tackle the timing and tension.
Hi Abi. I purchased a Kenmore 16622 serger that didn’t work. I have some general experience servicing vintage sewing machines. This one would not form any stitches. I opened it and cleaned and oiled it and the timing on the upper looper was just slightly off. I ordered the gauges and went through every step in the service manual , making very few adjustments. It still is not working right. It looks like the needle threads have zero tension on them but they do, and if I tighten it beyond 3 my threads just break. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much, many of your videos have helped me!!
I would definitely open it up and recalibrate the tension discs. A Kenmore is a US Janome, have a look at my janome calibrating video tutorial, it’s something worth considering for sure. Good luck and let me know how you get on
Hi...i wondering is it ok if use grease on joint of moving part like the elbow of the looper.....too bad i already bought brother serger 2104d...they quite pricey im my place eventhough it has low quality..instead put machine oil they put grease on joint part of machine....
That’s taking a sledge hammer to the machine. The problem with grease is it damages thread more than oil. They’re being lazy. I personally would wipe it away and get hold of some machine oil. I hope that helps
At 17:48 to 18:15 after refitting the front cover, you adjust a screw next to parts 6 and 7 of the threading system but don't tell us what adjustment this is. Is it important? Thanks
Hello! My machine lights up when plugged in and turned on but it does not stitch or make any noise... what should I do? It's an older model and no service place near.
I like to use a light bearing oil.any generic sewing machine oil. Just watch out - Machine manufacturers sell oils at a very high price. It’s exactly the same stuff. They may tell you it’s different - it’s not :-). Hope that helps
I actually watched your video and cleaned very little oil as it was skipping stitches. Well needle changed all that never fixed it. Working better. I'd order new foot plate.
