Great video. Never thought I’d want to go buy a roof top tent so badly. I don’t know if you remember me commenting a few weeks ago. But I received a build date for my bronco. Can’t wait to begin adventuring

Great over view of the tent. I appreciate your honesty on the things “that could use some love”. The way it mounts was the biggest set back in my opinion.

Also, side note, you guys may say “why doesn’t the side windows have a rain fly” well iKamper actually sells detach/attachable rain window covers for the side panels. They are see through and uses a zipper to attach to the window.

Yeah and I have one. But that’s not a rain fly. I mean something that will cover me at least a little as I’m crawling in the the tent and taking my boots off so the rain isn’t hitting me directly

Recently picked one up second hand. I love it! I mounted mine to a ski rack close to the mounting points on the car using mending plates and bolts. Mounting is very versatile. I have mounted catch latches in the middle of the frame because I've noticed a gap in the shell that might let water in while driving. I'm going to have an aluminum plate made for the top, too. Colorado hail is no joke. That plastic top will not stand a chance. Other than that, I absolutely love it! Nice review😊

The BVD is a great tent. The solo weighs in at 140 lbs and the duo at 175 lbs. Not bad at all. I've got the Skycamp 2.0 right now and the BVD is on my short list of new tents under consideration.

RTTs are cool, but 175lbs is a lot of weight and the pricing is very high. You can get a high end ground tent with high end sleeping bags and mats from REI for a whole family of 4 to 5 for the same cost as one of the typical RTTs tents and you’d still be under the weight of an RTT.
@OFFTHEGRIND
@OFFTHEGRIND Год назад
True but that’s a completely different style of travel with different benefits from each. I can put my tent wherever I want I just have to level my vehicle. With a ground tent, you have to find level ground. Also, being up higher gives me awesome views of where I’m exploring and keeps me away from any animals on the ground. Not to mention it takes me seconds to setup instead of many, many minutes. This gives me more of the day to explore and not have to worry about weather I’ll have to setup in the dark or not

I use a TrailRax TRMR rack. It’s fantastic but you have to get the Rak pax as well. That’s where you get the full capacity. And no I didn’t, I got it from TrailRax directly. But this is the only rack that does endorses

I haven’t got mine yet, but just ordered it and was looking over the manual. Are you sure you’ve got it mounted properly? The instructions show the bars running front-to-back being used to mount the tent, not the ones running side-to-side.
@OFFTHEGRIND
@OFFTHEGRIND Год назад
The bars running front to back are for the base of the tent and not for mounting. The side to side bars will be what you use to mount the tent. Ikamper actually installed my tent so I’m sure they did it right haha. I hope at least
@walterrussell3370

If they installed it for you I’m sure it’s correct. But that’s very misleading since the instructions show it differently (bars running front to back)

Has anyone mounted this tent to a set of Thule crossbars roof rack system on top of a leer truck canopy or a similar set up? The Thule cross bars are rated at 220lbs weight capacity. Curious if this set up would be strong and safe enough for the tent? Thanks in advance for any helpful info.

Does it have a HVAC pass through ? I couldn't find any info on that on Ikampers website. We are running the TRMR rack as well, Based on your install, Are the crossbars on the tent too long to drop down between the 90 degree angle rails that run the length of the bronco preventing it from being mounted to the crossbars of the TRMR rack ? The instructions show it being mounted directly to the crossbars of the rack via the full length bars on the bottom of the tent as do most rtt's Im just trying to figure out if you had to make a compromise to make it work with the TRMR rack adding ruffly 1" extra height I haven't purchased this tent yet but it's sort of on the list Thanks in advance ! BTW great job on your video content /channel good stuff Regards, UnBroken
@OFFTHEGRIND
@OFFTHEGRIND 11 месяцев назад
Hey! So, they do not have a dedicated pass through for HVAC. What I’ve don’t is use the side window opposite the ladder side. You can also wrap whatever hose in a towel to get a better seal, but I’ve never had an issue with this method. For the tent and mounting on the rack, TrailRax has recently come out with the heavy duty tent mounts and they are for sure the way to go. They distribute the load of the tent across 4 bars (2 front, 2 back) instead of just two (1 front 1 back). It’s also MUCH easier to mount the tent this way and will give you that height you’re looking for. If and When you do purchase, be sure to click the link in the bio cause it’ll save you $200 off the tent and then there’s a code for 10% off all accessories as well!

Thanks for your reply and input those brackets seem to be able to compliment most tents on the market when mounting to the TRMR rack if we decide on this tent or any of the IKamper tents or gear or Trailrax parts or accessories we will certainly use your link !@@OFFTHEGRIND

Thanks for your insight we ended up going with the 23 zero Kabari Lite Americana Reasons, Dimensions, weight, mounting rails run front to back so no extra brackets to purchase while keeping the lowest profile, don’t have to assemble it to save money and snagged a great deal on it “Black Friday “ including free shipping The only con we could see thus far is a tad less room and since we’re not entertaining folks in it / sleeping quarters it seemed to fit the bill. However we did use your link to snag the Iceco Apl55 we’ve been stalking that thing and they dropped the price to 687.00 yesterday sadly they wouldn’t let us combine OTG12 discount code but I can’t blame them seems like the best bang for the buck in the fridge market Keep up the good work ! Hey David. Which design, clam shell or wedge, would you recommend for a taller camper? I am 6'7 and I am sure that neither will be perfect, nothing ever is for my height, but I would like to get as close as possible. I am considering the Skycamp 3.0 Mini and the BDV, for use on my Bronco with the Trailrax. Also, I have the 40" light bar. Would the length of the BDV interfere with that, when mounting? I appreciate any insight you can give. Thank you.
@OFFTHEGRIND
@OFFTHEGRIND 10 месяцев назад
Oh man!! That’s kinda rough in this case man. I think the mini might be better for you since it doesn’t have a super tight foot box like the bdv. But you’ll definitely have to sleep sideways in it. If you decide to go with the bdv, it will not interfere with the light bar. No problem at all there! Also, there’s a link in the description for ikamper that’ll save you some money, so check that out before you order!
@matthewmontecalvo8109

@ericmiller456 did you end up deciding? I’m in the same boat being 6’ 6” and I’m trying to decide between the two. The Skycamp seems like it might be better for my height. @offthegrind great videos! I’ve been watching and learning what to consider when building my bronco for similar adventures on the east coast!

@ericmiller457 3 месяца назад
@@matthewmontecalvo8109I went with the Skycamp Mini. I tried out the BDV and, although I could make it work, it was not long enough to lay out straight. Skycamp mini is also light weight and I like the awning over the ladder.

@OFFTHEGRIND
@OFFTHEGRIND Год назад
I just make sure it’s as flat as possible. I have a 0 degree mummy bag too and when that’s in there I put my pillows to the side of it. I also have the air mattress that allows me to suck the air out of it and gives me more room. Do you have that as well?
@NorthwestBronco
@NorthwestBronco Год назад
@@OFFTHEGRIND I purchased the air mattress specifically to get my bedding in. It worked, but the 0 degree bag from Wiggy's it just too thick. The summer bag fits just fine. More on the mattress, I loved it but wanted to shave some time off set up and take down. So I gave the factory mattress a try. Slept all night and loved it. So now I'm running the factory mattress. Saves a few steps. Once again, great video on that tent!

I honestly have not had it in heavy rain quite yet. The rain I was in with it was a little more than a sprinkle and it wasn’t really an issue. I would imagine with a heavy rain it would be great.
