It’s had its ups and downs, TAG Heuer-and perhaps more recently, the ups have been outnumbered by the downs. There’s a positive future on the horizon thanks to the efforts of brand fixer-upper Jean-Claude Biver, but a look to the future isn’t always enough to give us hope-we need to look to the past as well.

Not all of us are watch snobs, some of us buy because of the looks and TAG does a great job. I own a Flyback, Calibre 36, Calibre 16 day/ date, Calibre 8 GMT and a Calibre 01 - all these watches get me compliments, my Rolex submariner gets me " is it real?". I like watches, if it looks good - I buy it and not because its a Pani or a Rolex, I'm NOT in it for investment which is what these so called snobs seem concerned about depreciation (like Tags do). Who cares!!........just don't pay retail, lots of used like new on eBay among other places.

Personally I only buy my RollX from a man on High Street who insists on getting his made by a guy named Franz on a Tuesday, as Franz likes to get absolutely pissed Friday thru Sunday. Evermore, On Tuesday Franz has his hand delivered, ham sandwich lunch by a local village girl wearing a near replica of Steve McQueen's bathrobe. So that's how I know it's Real! But I totally agree with you, watch snobbery is the worsth Evy! Don't even get me started y'all.

My wife bought me my first “luxury” watch....tag aquaracer calibre 5... say what you will about tag, it works great, looks good, and was affordable for her , at the time. More importantly though, its a watch that has a story, and emotional attachment (my wedding day)...THAT is what watches are about. Not the brand... not the movement. The feeling you get when you wear it. Nothing more, nothing less.
@nolanolivier6791
@nolanolivier6791 5 лет назад
Completely empathise; my wife got me an aquaracer for xmas a few years ago, and I love it because I associate it with the wonderful memories of the adventures we had while I wore it; better still, it got me into watches. If I ever feel down and want to remember diving in Borneo, I jut have to put it on. It isn't perfect, and I treated it as an everyday watch, but it will always have a special place in my heart... and isn't that what horology is really all about? I don't really care what other people think of it...

I've just bought a TAG Heuer Aquaracer Pepsi GMT as my first Swiss made watch and I find myself loving it more and more each day, I was too impatient for the Black Bay GMT wait list and I'll never have the portfolio to get a GMT Master unless I pay a massive premium. I'm a huge F1 fan, so growing up I've seen the TAG Heuer brand sponsoring teams all over the grid. Because of this, rightly or wrongly through the power of advertising, It was up there with one of the first watch brands I knew about and respected. People don't like the whole TAG acquisition, and I get that completely, but for me as a mid 20 year old (not remembering "Heuer") that adds a bit more racing heritage to it, TAG its self being a major part in the sport in the past just makes that whole side of it a bit more interesting, to me anyway! The Formula 1 line of TAG Heuer is actually what got me into watches in the first place so for that alone, I cant really knock it... The long grind to save the money for a Polar Dial Explorer 2 now beings though... 😅

Those of the watch community that continue to lift their noses at TAG seem to forget why this brand sells so many watches: Looks. Most people who buy a TAG aren’t overly concerned with what movement it has. I have IWC’s, Omega’s, Seiko‘s and two TAG’s among others, in my collection. I recently bought the newly released Carrera Calibre 16 Chrono (Valjoux ETA 7750 tho)with the blue dial for 3 reasons: heritage, wonderful to look at, and the fact that the AD sold it to me for 25% off retail (I always negotiate at least 20%). If the price is right, I may even buy a Monaco someday. It’s silly that some are ok with wearing an Oris, Hamilton or Longines but wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a TAG. Discounted off retail, they’re a great entry level watch - IMHO.
@jonathanbeaumont0

I agree, you can also get pretty good deals on the grey market and used. What I find interesting is people are more impressed by my formula one caliber 5 than they are my planet ocean 8900 which was almost triple the price. I’d love to own a carrera calibre 16 Chrono for the fight price - they are beautiful. Sweet watch!

Agreed, I'm glad someone said it. TAG Heuer has always been miles ahead in terms of pure style albeit fashion conscious. In 2009 I bought a fabulous looking Aquaracer Caliber S with an incredible hybrid movement, all beautifull navy blue years before it became fashionable. I guess the problem is with the inherent quality of their watches and issues with quality control. I don't know of 1 person who's got a TAG Heuer and not bought ot back within warranty because it was broken (me included). Some horror stories with the Monacos. This brand deserves to be better than just a fashion cash cow brand. Branding and choice for the consumer was miles better than the competition though! Now Omega is strutting that line better.

Most watch snobs turn their noses up at TAG Heuer without any respect for what they've brought to horology. Most people who think Tag is shit still can't give me a real reason why, if the watches simply don't appeal to you, cool that's all good and well, but when you're going to talk down on somebody else's time piece, especially from a brand that has done some pretty cool things in their history, and just say it sucks, at least have an argument as to why. Besides their entry level pieces, they have some really cool conceptual/Haute Horology watches as well.

I'll give you a reason; I am not interested in buying a "fine" watch sold in a middle-class department store next to a quartz Movado and plastic Seiko. I always like Tag Heuer watches because their watches design are beautiful. I like the design of the Link bracelet watch, the design of the Kirium, the design of the Carrera and the design of the Monaco. Probably Tag Heuer watches became unpopular because they were not making their own movement, They were using mainly ETA movements and in some watches they used plastic instead of steel for the movements support.

Back in 1990 I bought a TAG Heuer 2000 chrono quartz, a rare model with tachy bezel. I saved long and hard for that ‘high end’ watch after pulling myself out of unemployment and depression. 3 years later I lost it when my apartment was burgled, I never quite got over that. I’ve since owned proper mechanical watches - Omega Speedmaster, Vintage Heuer automatic chronos calibre 11/12/Valjoux etc… Yet the loss of my ‘Starter pack’ Swiss TAG (with Quartz movement, the bane of stuffy watch enthusiasts 😂) that few would care about still haunts me. The memories of things we prized and lost that signify an important period in life don’t go away so easily, regardless of cost, brand, or monetary value. But I’m at least thankful that I will never forget the day I bought that little TAG trinket, it signified a bright new chapter in my life after crawling out of a dark abyss🙂

The main issue with TAG Heuer is that the older generation don’t really get it TAG Heuer is aimed at the younger guy who probably isn’t interested in the movement but want a known brand watch that they connect with and that’s TAG Heuer as a 20-30 year I have zero interest in omega (old man watch) or haute horological brands as there a bit boring really, rolex is far too expensive and again very old design, mechanical watches don’t impress everyone as an engineer quartz actually is more interesting than two springs and a few gears TAG Heuer is for the younger generation who aren’t interested in haute horology who just want a Swiss brand watch that they know the name of, In this day and age everyone has a phone so hating on people who actually do buy a watch that may later in life get more into horology is the wrong way to go about it.

TRUE STORY: My first "serious" watch was an all steel 1989 baby size F1 (the 2nd lot under the TAG umbrella), that was for my 12th birthday (and some good exam results). Now I pretty much wrecked the thing within 3 yrs but took the battery out and kept it thinking that one day I'd get it fixed to give it to someone that mattered most. As I grew up (well, I still love motorsport and wreck watches - hence I wear a Seiko Marinemaster "Tuna" 300m, thats bulletproof) and learned more about watches I always thought this old TAG Heuer was worthless. In 2018 browsing the old litterweb I was surprised not to be able to find a the same model as I had. Lots of plastic ones, but very few if any steel ones. Anyway, wife's bithday coming up out went my old F1 steel back to TAG Heuer for repair for th pricely sum of €550. It came back fantasticly well restored. I don't where on earth they sourced the parts?: near as damn it identical bracelet as the original(colour of the steel ever so slightly different), new bezel (bakelite I think) crown, cristal and movement shroud. To see this old thing I'd kept in a box for 26 yrs as if it left the factory but wearing the beautifull patina on the face bought back a wave of childhood memories and made for a very, very happy wife. I was surprised they'd even accept restoring it and TAG Heuer did it beautifully. ow my wife as a Cartier a Hermes and never in all these years has anyone managed to get her to actually wear a watch for an amount of time (I did get some limited success with a white Baby G Schok). This one though, with the emotional attachement, does not leave her wrist.

Great narrative (as always) and perfect insight. I'm a big motorsports follower since I was a kid, my second watch was given to me for my 11th birthday and it was a grey and yellow Tag Heuer F1 (quartz) watch with Alain Prost car in the case. Since then I've been a watch nut, nerd and "collector". I owe Tag Heuer a big part of my passion for watches and I look forward to own another one again (I still have my F1) perhaps a vintage Heuer... @joshsmith7812
@joshsmith7812 5 лет назад
So? It's a reliable and easily replaced or repaired movement. IWC, Brietling, Omega, Panerai, Tissot, all use or have used ETA movements and nobody bats an eye. Considering the price of some other luxury watch brands and what they offer in their entry level pieces, Tag gives you a lot of watch. Plus they're iconic, Tag just like Rolex and Omega is one of those brands that even the average person who doesent know a lot about watches recognises. Enjoy your Tag bro, nothing wrong with it, Snobs just hate on Tag because theyve mostly not got much else better to do. Tag Heuer is actually one of the best selling luxury watch brands, their marketing is excellent. Their Heritage is really cool, plus that new Tourbilion watch they released has ruffled a few feathers in the industry, brands who produced Tourbilion models and charged way more for their watches didn't like that.

Heres the thing about TH; for the money the fit and finishing is fantastic, ive owned several, take a carerra reissue or even a lowly aquaracer and handle it next to, say, a base level oyster perpetual, and tell me the Tag is that much worse, and second, they have a huge product line of almost exclusively sport watches with decent design language, which is harder to do than most people realize. Its the same reason Breitling is so successful, and their designs all tend to look redundant. A link is unique from an aquaracer which is unique from a carerra and so on. Yes they outsourse movements, so does IWC. You think they're overpriced? So is every other swiss watch, i fail to see what makes Tag more egregious. Also, all their cases and bracelets are made in Switzerland. Rumors through the grapevine say you cant count on that from other similarly priced brands, and even some nicer ones (the one that rhymes with Shmomega comes to mind).

Steve: FWIW, Breitling have been up shit creek for a few years now. Good watches, but designs and sizes 10 years out of date. Many models are available unworn on the grey market for 50%+ discounts due to over-supply and under-demand. New management doing their best to turn it around.

@goldendawn7 5 лет назад
@@sirbuftontufton5846 you're 100% correct, but for a long time, especially the giant-tough-guy-watch halcyon days of the 2000's prior to now, breitling was doing very well.

From what I can gather, the vintage stuff are gems, the Monaco is a gem but newer models use ETA movements, that cheaper watches also use. Meaning you paying for brand. Although their watches always gather compliments

I own a Carrera blue dial day date and I think is is so much value and looks amazing. It was an alternative for me for the Aqua Terra or a Grand Seiko. At a fraction of the cost you get amazing aesthetics and a decorated (be it basic movement) movement. The H-link bracelet is also very unique and cool. Tag is a good brand in my opinion.

99% of watch companies were buyed some time in the past by other companies or large groups. So what? Because they kept the name on the watch that means something? That means that they are as good as they used to be? Maybe Heuer did a mistake to change the name of the brand but they make dumn good watches for their price and thats a fact.

No mention of the Seiko scandal? Are they still using Asian movements (even if modified) in any of their watches?

They have some models inspired by the old carrera that I love. But they ask 5k for essentially a Sellita with a piggyback module chronograph. Hell no. Not when I can get a superior movement for less than 2k from other respected brands. At those prices you should definitely stick with vintage Heuer's.

I was pleased with myself when I picked up an unworn Monaco LS from a Spanish pawn shop for under half price. Less pleased when the hour hand of the chronograph function fell off.....it’s definitely a genuine Tag Heuer but at a list price of £6,500, that was utterly disgraceful!

It’s simple, mechanical watches became mostly irrelevant in racing and aviation. Heuer and countless other watchmakers in that space needed to rebrand and take a new direction. Not their fault they had to adapt.

Walked into a jewellers once and saw a TAG in red with Manchester United FC on the dial. Looked like a £10 piece of garbage you'd get from Argos. That's nothing to do with the team and all to do with how God awful and tacky it looked. They clearly don't give a damn. Chance lost.

The only watch brand I actually hate ..... is Rolex. And ... it is completely emotional and not rational. They make good watches ( a bit overpriced in my opinion) and have not bad designs. The quality is solid. But...... I don’t like that Brand.... because u can see it too often. Also one of my bosses was collecting Rolex watches. I just can’t help it. Whenever I see a sub it reminds me him. ... But Tag heuer is fine u think.

Tag Heuer is indeed underrated, even sometimes criticized! The reason? None! Some people just carry on only with Rolex, Patek and so on.. as the best brands ever, even some of those people cannot even afford to owe one, and worse, do not even like them esthetically and first of all, as a WATCH. Tag Heuer are great, I have in my collection, and it will always be. So stop hating them because of what people say, love them or hate them, but stop criticizing when you never had one at your wrist. Thanks W&C for your videos!

The latest Monaco has the Heuer (02) in house movement so they wiped that modified ETA stain away from the Monaco! Good for them, the Monaco deserved better. I like th look and heritage of the watch but it's not for me. It might be .... in 10-20 years from now though.

This entire film is why I dislike TAG Heuer so much. They had this beatiful brand and just ruined it with uninspired, gimmicky watches. So no, I will not give TAG Heuer a chance, exactly for the reasons mentioned.

I think the biggest problem is the association with mall jewelry stores. It's a brand every yokel that stumbles through a Kay Jewelers thinks is a "nice watch," which sadly taints the brand for anyone wanting just a shade of exclusivity.

The brand name should be only Heuer,not Tag Heuer! Tag bought the Heuer and put his name on it. As mr Biver said that only bring confusion and thats why the brand stagnates.I hope Biver will solve out that confusion!

I’m here because I’m pretty sure my next watch will be a Carrera chronograph, and strangely enough, RU-vid seems to know this. I was one of those who dismissed the brand. But the more I look into it the more I realize there is a bias in the community that, while understandable, is also unwarranted. Fire the marketing department.
