I love how you point out the fact that making money doesn’t happen quickly because lots of people who share tips kinda glaze over that. It’s definitely a long haul thing. I’ve been blogging on and off since 2009 on different things as my interest has changed. It wasn’t until pivoting to my current topic that I started to build traction with a small following on IG, built relationships & trust and then started my channel. For a new creator, it definitely can take time to figure out where you fit. I just want to say that it’s so much better to listen to someone like you, Jen, who’s not too far ahead in her journey because there can be a feeling of disconnect with the advice coming from HUGE RU-vidrs. I love that you’re sharing tips with us and always enjoy watching them. 😊
Thank you! And I’ll tell you a little secret….I do it as my quarterly meeting for the IRS. In my brain these videos keep me from being audited. Is that true? Well no that’s most likely because i have an amazing accountant but you can never be too careful.😂😂😂🤪
Love you Jen, it’s always so interesting to hear how different everyone is and how we all do this in our own ways. Definitely 100000% onboard and we’ve talked about this - with being respectful and considerate to other people in public, and also unapologetically respecting OUR OWN boundaries! We do this and enjoy it, and we have the right to choose what we share and what we don’t share. Keeping that balance I think has helped us both to avoid some of the negative things we’ve seen for many others. Just staying true to ourselves and keeping a healthy balance with private lives. ❤️❤️❤️ I hope lots of people watch this, there’s a lot of value in hearing your story and methods.
This is super interesting Jen, you are always so transparent and honest, i think the 100% of 10% rule is fascinating, and I will adopt that policy for everyday life. Also finding out what people are interested in is a great tip. I joined you to learn about DVC but have stayed through, home organisation, stitch fix, bathroom update and all the travel. Thank you so much for being so transparent! It really does help build a sense of trust I feel. I also like what you said about asking if someone wants to be in your vlog, and if they say no it’s the end of the discussion. Everyone’s privacy is important. Kind of on that topic, you mention trying not to get strangers in your vlogs but it can be hard not to sometimes. I know a lot of Japanese and Korean vloggers use some tool or apps to blur the faces of strangers. I’m not sure how much work it is, but it’s an option if you like some footage but want to not include some people for their privacy.
This was SOOOO good, Jen! Filming people in public can be so hard sometimes. Not over sharing and keeping certain aspects of our lives private is so incredibly important. So so proud of you and what you’ve achieved through the years and happy to say that we’ve been a fan from almost the start!
I am a travel advisor with 30 years in the biz. I want to start doing more with my content on my website which I am overhauling. I too have a performing arts background and I enjoy writing. The part that freaks me out, is the tech, the editing, uploading, which equipment. Ugh! But I am going to give it a shot.
Creating content for 2 channels, editing, all the traveling and running a home I would say you are in fact a Beast! I don’t where you get all your energy but I would love to know.

I have no desire to be on camera, but recently retired, a bit early, and I’m feeling that all the expertise I’ve gained and advice I have to share has just flat disappeared from the world. It’s such a weird feeling. I like being useful! So, thinking of a blog, maybe I can brain dump there in an interesting way. (Would be about college, why it’s worth it or not, - at any age - ways to think about it…) Thanks for the idea!

It helps those of us deciding whether or not to put time into becoming a creator. - I totally get and agree with wearing a certain “hats” on a given day. - Good to know after all this time it can still take you 5 takes! - I’m glad you addressed whether or not you can work while traveling…that was encouraging for me as that was a concern!
Yeah I’ve tried because working on the road would make my life at home easier but it’s just not how I’m wired! My laptop stays behind and I fully immerse myself in the travel.
Hi Jen, I need your help!! I have a lavalier microphone similar to yours - when I when I did my video recording (I also record on my iphone - I have a 12) it sounded great playing back on my phone - however when I moved the clip to iMovie for editing it sounded off (like I was talking into a cup!). Do you do anything - such as change a setting on your phone or in iMovie when you put your clips on iMovie after recording from your phone?? I have done hours of research trying to figure out why this sounds so off and I can't figure this out 😆 Please let me know if you have any advice on or tips regarding this 💜
Yes, it really is. And I'm in the top 2-3 percent of earners. It's not something creators like to talk about but I think it's a disservice to pretend it's better than it is or to set up (especially young people) and make them think that it's something it isn't. If patreon ceased to be an option I would quit tomorrow. No joke. So thank you for your support there!
