I couldn't agree more with this. This was my biggest surprise of Dice Tower Con. I don't usually go for miniature skirmish games, but this one really knocked it out of the park.
What's interesting is how these characters feel after several sessions. At the start, King Arthur was constantly losing in our group until we began to understand when to boost correctly for killing blows. The game is also straightforward enough to be a great template for fan-made fighters
That line-of-sight is genius! Not sure why more games don’t use that. You could easily use matching symbols or a kind of small “color wheel” icon if you didn’t want to sacrifice graphics on the spaces.
For a minute I panicked. I thought this was going to Kickstarter and the review meant that I missed it. Straight to retail means no KS exclusive characters and I'm glad to hear this. It's great that there are publishers willing to do this again.
It’s one of the advantages of the simpler, more “mass-market” approach. Since they aren’t dealing with as niche a market, they don’t have to worry as much about losses and therefore don’t need to secure funding and sales ahead of time.
It's a l little disappointing that the Bruce Lee set will be mostly only available in the US due to needing to attend gen con to get a license to even sell them
The designer mentions on the bbg forum it also works as a free-for-all, and formal rules for that are on the way. This looks perfect for when you're hungover and have an attention span of a goldfish.
I just stumbled upon this at the local game store and am absolutely hooked! Already a wargamer, so I picked up just one Robin Hood and Bigfoot starter to get a taste, but will definitely be picking up the core box later this week. Excited to see what else comes of this series, as it looks like they've also licensed some expansions with a Jurassic Park and Bruce Lee packs coming out later this year.
At Origins I talked to the Restoration Games president, and he seemed to hint that they are working on a brick and mortar support program that very well could include some light organized play support for Unmatched. Either way, super looking forward to this game!
I agree that we need more games at this level - fun and accessible for kids and also enjoyable for us parents! I guess King of Tokyo and Castle Panic fit this bill nicely.
Agree with the review, though I'm surprised Tom didn't include this game in his top 100 board games because he seemed pretty enthusiastic in this. Probably got bored of it quickly. I think only Zee really likes Unmatched from Dice Tower team as he included it in his top 30.
This makes me wish Restoration Games would do a reboot of Tannhauser from Fantasy Flight Games. Obviously couldn't use the same lore/names, but easy enough to put a WWI/II + occult theme on it.
I feel Dungeon Command was that perfect "enough strategy to entertain competitive players but simple enough for kids to play, understand and enjoy", shame WotC doesn't know how to let their babies grow.
Smart using public domain i.p in most of there games and also getting licenced i.p too Fictional characters of literature and mythology for the public domain and then movies & tv shows for the licenced i.p characters
Oh my god, this game looks so good! I really hope it's successful enough to come out in Spanish, it seems great to play with younger people but language could be an unavoidable barrier there.
I was sorta like eh....and staring at the copies of MtG: Arena of the Planewalkers that I still haven't taught myself to play...then learned there's a Robin Hood vs Bigfoot expansion. Sold.
To be clear: Robin Hood vs. Bigfoot can play all on its own and is a great way to try out the system and see if it works for you. We assume most people won't buy every single set that comes out but might mix and match the ones that really interest them.
@@RestorationGames Has it been announced when Unmatched is going to be available? This was kinda my first time hearing anything about it, they were talking about it on their recent Dice Tower Con video and I had to go find this, and after a cursory Googling, all I could find was "Fall 2019".
Man, I'm willing to throw down the cash for ALL the games. But it's SO hard to get in Singapore, and for some reason Mondo doesn't ship internationally for these games too.
When the effect triggers, just check to see if the fighter is in the same space that they started their turn in or not. If they are, it stays at 3; if they're in a different space, it changes to 5. On defense, this can happen if your opponent has an effect that moves your fighter before the attack. For example, Merlin uses command the storms to move your fighter adjacent to Arthur for a big hit. When Arthur attacks and you play Momentous Shift in response, you're now defending with a 5 because your fighter was in a different space at the beginning of the turn.
I gotta admit this got me interested. It looks SO freaking polish!!! My only issue... expansions... I hope we get 4 characters expansions, like stand alone expansion... I hope they do not put out fewer character expansions... it will make collective the game unnecesarily more expensive.... EDIT: Just saw the other videos and lost interest on this title :(
Medusa seems underpowered for being a major Greek mythology antagonist. Her back story is true tragedy. Seems that her stone transformation gaze should be one of the strongest abilities as unless someone can fight her without looking at her, then she should be able to be unstoppable as she is a archer on top of that.
Her gaze of stone is the highest potential damage of any single card in the game. Obviously, we need to make everyone balanced, but she's plenty tough.
@@RestorationGames Yeah her attack has the potential to be OP if unblocked. I believe Darth Vader had a card in his deck called All Too Easy and if unblocked practically a K.O. I think there might have been other similar cards like that in Epic Duels too, like maybe in the Han & Chewy deck the card Never Tell Me The Odds. But I don't own that game no more and don't really remember.
Really disappointed in the loose hit point dials. I have put these type of dials together for years and I have never had any that fit so poorly until this game. Other than that it is very well put together and high quality.
I wish there was an IP attached to this. Tom might like random people fighting but I think it doesn’t make sense. Superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy or non-fiction but not all in one. Love the system but hate the characters chosen.
You'll be happy to know that there are IP sets coming soon. That's a big part of our partnership with Mondo Games. We've already announced a Buffy set. And we've got another big one we hope to announce real soon.
Restoration Games great to hear. I’m not against public domain at all. Seeing Greek heroes fight monsters or Arthurian Legends duel all sounds awesome. Thanks also for the reply as it shows you care about what the players think. I hope you have a bright future restoring games from the past!
As a fan of Epic Duels, calling this a remake of Epic Duels seems like a bit of a stretch... also, this seems to be similar enough to wild lands, and I'd rather play that instead.
Jesse Chapman Unfortunately I think this game will receive way more support than wild lands. I have all expansions for wildlands, but it seems to be losing momentum especially with the new non compatible judge Dredd version coming out.
