I'm trying to unaturally break in the leather basketball by go through the process called “mudding.” It's the same process that the American football leagues used for their game balls. The process involved the application of mud to the leather cover of the actual ball. Will this process work on the basketball? let's find out.

The way I start to break in my new basketballs: I dribble my brand new basketballs for twenty minutes every day for forty days straight before take it to the court. I do it in my living room ceramic tiles floor. It's a hard polished surface harder than a hardwood floor. It helps to soften the ball and to break in the leather. It works for me. Thanks for taking the time to show us your experiment.

40 days? Wow. Pretty long time for not trying to shoot with it. 😆 but good to know thanks for sharing the info.

That's far too much work. Watch my football prepping video it works just as good on leather basketballs

Can I do this with my Baden composite leather basketball? It's very tacky and rough on my finger tips

Only use this method on full leather basketballs. Not on composite leather.

Does breaking in a basketball only affect the feel in hand, or does it bounce differently as well? If so, does it get more or less bouncy?
@EverythingBasketballs
@EverythingBasketballs Год назад
you won't notice much on the bounce. but grip is noticeably difference. In the video, i didn't take my time polishing the ball but afterward, i did spend a lot of time polishing it and the grip gets better and has a smoother surface.

You never want to rub mud on leather then brush it off because all those granules of dirt do is clogged the pores and absorbs the moisture that the leather needs it also prevents the leather from properly breathing

Nice work on the experiment 👍. I wonder if that shaving cream trick I’ve seen them do on the NFL Wilson makes a difference 🤔
@EverythingBasketballs
@EverythingBasketballs Год назад
Shaving cream is mostly used to help remove the color dye on the football. I don’t think basketball has any.

Will the mud [contains water] and heat harm the leather on the basketball?
@EverythingBasketballs
@EverythingBasketballs Год назад
the heat is used to let the leather conditioner soak into the leather better. also, the heat is used to dry the water faster because i don't want the water to sit on the leather too long. hard brush will destroy the leather so use a softer brush.

Very much so you never want to rub dirt into leather it will clog the pores starving the leather of air and moisture
@Cycling-n-Stuff

@@EverythingBasketballsapplying heat to conditioner only evaporates it before it has the chance to soak into the leather

This is stupid. Leather conditioner will make it harder to brake in. Fundamentals of brake in a genuine leather ball is your natural oils from your palms/hands, softening to bouncing the ball on hard wood, the dirt that the hardwood floor soaks and breaks the leather surface of the ball making the ball bibbels dark. Hard rubber or tile floor can make the ball shiny and even harder .
@EverythingBasketballs
@EverythingBasketballs Год назад
I respect your opinion, but this is definitely NOT stupid. there're a lot of people who have the same curiosity about whether this football mudding method works on leather basketball. I'm only trying to help save people time and money.

Does composite leather changes color too?
@EverythingBasketballs
@EverythingBasketballs Год назад
yes it does. because over time the ball accumulate all the dust and other particles.

@@adrianjoshuacruz5385 depend on the balls and colors when it was brand new. Some composite basketball turn brown like the leather balls but thats because of the color dye.
