Are the KORG Volca Bass and the IK Multimedia UNO Synth the same thing? They're both analog hardware synthesizers around $200 and they've both got sequencers right? I've received questions about this ever since the UNO came out and I stared featuring it in my videos. Well, here's my answer! I own both now and I've been playing them for months. I consider Volca Bass more musical and Uno Synth more oriented to experiment. What I mean is, with Volca Bass with almost no knowledge on synthesis I could create and record music in no time. With Uno Synth I needed to study a little and practice but now I have passion for this synth because I can do almost anything. Right now I prefer Uno Synth because I feel that possibilities are endless and Volca Bass in comparison seems simple. In terms of sound, same thing: With Volca Bass you will have amazing sounds in minutes, and you will have maybe more fun in the beginning; with Uno Synth you will need to "fight" a little with the instrument to find what you are searching for but the work really worth it, and you will learn a lot in the process.

@@WNandS in all honesty ive gone back inside the box lol, my times been limited so when i do have the creative urge and nothing else is in my way its just the most convenient way to make use of it for me. ive got so many good soft synths and effects that im pretty well covered etc.. but you know how life can be, theres a lot of different things fighting for your attention yeah. my time with music is not constant, its in patches here and there across the year. im always listening to a lot of new stuff inbetween though so when i do have a patch of time to dedicate i usually find my approach has change and that somehow what im doing sounds more refined

Love the sound of the UNO, it sounds like something twice its price and really has lots of features for its price. 2 complete ADSR's and the variable waveforms are really cool features at that price. I just wish they had made everything available from the front panel, even if that meant a bit of menu diving. Parameters like filter keyboard tracking, velocity routing and PWM really open the synth up. Still, it's hard to beat at its price. I just assigned the missing knobs to my MIDI controller (MPK 61) so I don't have to deal with the editor. Works great!

Have both. Didn’t fancy the Uno but pice was too tempting. Love it. Unique sound. Future classic. Can get some lovely thick, rubbery tones. Sequencer a bit cumbersome but ok. Using it in a battery powered mini studio in a case set up, but it may move to the top table. Been my favourite purchase in a while. Doesnt seem to like going through effects pedals. Would highly recommend

I’ve both the uno and bass and only got them recently has I’m just starting out with synths & do love them both.. my only thing is now which to daisy chain the uno into?? I have an SH-01, volca bass,volca modular,behringer TD3,Roland TR-08recently the brute of the behringer RD-9!! Any help would be very appreciated and congratulations on taking the sober path dude❤ I myself got sick of the demons chasing me although it’s early days for me.. great informative video there buddy.. nice one,keep the faith 🎹🎛🎹🤙🏼💯

Hi Jakob, Thanks for the in-depth video. You stated that the PO pairs really well with both units. Although the Uno can't send a click track. Is there anything you can recommend for syncing the Uno and a PO? Maybe using iOS or something? Thanks!

MY personal preference is UNO. It just sounds fatter and smoother. More analogue. Volca is more strict, chopped, square, precise, but flatter. I like UNO's sloppiness. It's more lively. And it has a fucking punch with filter. Filter is brilliant in my opinion. I am filter freak and I am telling you, filter has serious character. One of the best. And we know that true hart of a mono synth is filter. Moog proved it. I had one and I loved it's simplicity and sound. But I've send it back because of delicate plastic knobs. They will break during live situation. I know it. BUT I want it back! So I am buying it again and if it breaks, well... I get another one. I wish they made knobs sturdier, not plastic. But... sound is great. From deep base to delicate string'ish sounds. Voice is very well designed and wide. It's like 3 Volcas in one unit. This vide. Low, mid, highs. It weights nothing. You can easily throw it in the bag. Works off batteries, hoverer, batteries drain quickly. I think they are drained even if not used (off). My unit was one of the first (preorder) so maybe this is fixed now. And... I wish it had Bluetooth audio and data. It would greatly benefit form that. Cheers!

This video rules. I had a volca keys I absolutely adored that I traded with an electribe 2 for a fender tele. I love my tele and got a sweet deal But want those two Korg products back 😢 I feel you on the having to sell gear due to poor life choices. Been there and had to sell almost everything I owned to make sure I could stay afloat at the time I had to. I really enjoyed your video and you seem like a very real dude. This video made my day.

I have the Volca bass it's great, you can get some really gnarly sounds and the filter on full res or high res is the dogs nuts, I like the sound of the UNO synth it looks well thought out and the editor is a real bonus.

Loved UNO. Scared of fiddly plastic knobs. Returned it. Now want it back (because simplicity and grarly electronica sound). Now waiting for SKULPT reviews to decide which one get. Please get Skulpt and review it. Compare if you can with UNO.

Even though they have their differences, I use my UNO as the master and bass as a slave through MIDI. They compliment each other so well. One panned right, the other left. Just don't let the volca sequencer run while it's following the UNO. Introduces a slight delay in the volca for some reason. And record briyng on on the UNO does strange things to the volca, for sure.

I remember people expressing concerns about the kind of buttons that the UNO has. Do you think they are made to last and secondly how responsive are they? Great video. The UNO seems great for a small budget. Although I would like to see something similar multi-timbral, even if it was only four times or so.

I'd buy both cause I like the volcas, the Uno though serves to many other perposes, can't compare them.. the volca looks definitely cooler than the Uno.. it's metal face and knobs is like a piece of Jewellery. gotta love the volca design..

The IK has more features but consequently the intereface is less fluid. you can of course get used to it, but I often found myself accidentally changing synth patches when I was trying to shift the octave and things like that

Just picked one up, i kinda have to say this was the most informative review i'd seen, one of the things that had me eying it for months. Really looking forward to it so thank you. I have a decent 12 core DAW with Ableton, Maschine, Beatstep, Keylab, Mackie Control etc. it can do anythign but it just isnt inspiring liek something you can twiddle on the couch, ive never had as much fun with it as i had with a monosynth (admittedly a system 100), step seq & a simple drum machine. Seems like ima have to build something to get that 104 sequencer vibe, ive never seen anything that can fux with time like it can (you can use the 2nd channel to CV tempo for variable note length, sure makes 12 steps much more usable than 12 steps ought to be).

I have been wanting a pocket operator, I’m order myself a few. I was going to also get an unosynth cause I want one. However watching this I’m totally confused. I'm having an issue with my UNO Synth with connecting to my PC. I got it to connect once. I didn't change any settings. Next time I tried connecting the UNO to my PC it wouldn't work. I have an UNO Drum also. I got that first. I had issues connecting it to the PC too. So when I got it set up correctly I took pics of the setup. Having learned my lesson with the Drum, I did the same thing for the Synth. I reproduced all of the settings exactly as they are in the pics. No dice though. My big gripe with the UNO Synth is the build quality. Right out of the box the plastic shell was slightly warped. It was ever so slightly wobbly when on a flat surface. The knobs are kinda cheap feeling too. The UNO Drum is the same too. Don't get me wrong. I love the little synth. You can tell that they had to cut some corners to get to the 200 dollar price point though.

I have both.they are great in the low end. with the uno you can easily run in the pwm area that I like. All in all good they are good buddies imho. Thank you for the video. greetings

My doubt gap with the UNO narrowed by a good margin after watching this awesome video. The UNO has "midi ports?" That means I can pair it up with the "midi dongles" from my Novation Circuit, cool. As for the Korg app, I'm going to hit the pause button on this until its first firmware update.

Yes, the 2,5” ports on the back of the UNO will provide DIN5 midi when used with the singles that come with the UNO. However I have no idea how it pairs up with a circuit since I’ve never tried that device unit myself.

2.5 on the UNO and 3.5 on the circuit, so you have to use the breakout adaptors, can't just run a straight cable from one to the other

Another nice feature of the UNO you can use the midi out to control another synthesizer and sequence it. You can also use the UNO to send midi clock to your other instruments! Furthermore because it has a usb and a midi out it is actually a usb midi interface, along with the daisy chain option for audio it’s really great for small portable setups!!!!

Hi Jakob. Great video my friend. It's tough to decide which mono synth suits me the best. I like Korg, but the Uno is also a great synth. Especially with the iOS app and the possibility to hook it up on an iOS device. I should go to my local music store to check them out, that would be nice! Greetings, Emiel.

When I was drunk druggie, I sold my nice hardware rig made of mostly Korg electribes and kaoss pads... two Cdj 800 mk2’s a set of technics 1200 and more than a few mixers. I’m just now getting my shit together and re-assembling my hardware rig.. it’s amazing how much deeper Into the hardware one can dive while (relatively) sober

Nice comparison! The ability to sequence each oscillator separately on the Volca Bass does it for me. Without that the UNO has more features, including editor, USB MIDI in/out and saved patches!

I think the po32 has audio in so technically you should. But I don't really see why you put the Volca Bass in there? You don't like the sound of the Uno? In this case you will only use the sequencer in the Uno I guess.

I'd still be undecided between the two - I like the Korg's sound most, but UNO let you access a more complex sound design. This means they both would work nice live, the Korg in a more complex setup (just like you were using it), but the UNO is probably better for someone like me who's looking for his first hardware and needs something to make the most out of it.
