Canadian Forces Base Borden is located about an hour's drive North of Toronto. The base is open access, so anyone can go to the museum.
In addition to the vehicles at the museum, there are others scattered as monuments around the base. I encountered a T-72 and T-55 on my way out the gate.

2015. 🙂 Really amazing man, lived on a farm in Wilno in his retirement with a working Sherman - think a later model, one of the ones we got to fill our armour regiments, post war. The 8 CH in Petawawa used to sometimes send two soldiers there every month to help him maintain it and other things. There was a fire there in the late 80s or early 90s, IIRC, after I'd been posted from regiment. He was the honorary Colonol of the RCAC when I was in and often met the soldiers on course. He had an uncanny memory of people's names and where they were from. Because I was from there, he told me once he was based at the Cape Spear coastal defence fort, Newfoundland and Labrador before his unit went to the UK and converted to armour. In the 80s, at a mess dinner, he insisted the Sherman was the best tank of the war because they were so easily fixed and replaceable. Used to say something to the effect of "I'd lose shermans during the day and the next day there would be replacements. When the Germans lost a tank, it was gone."

8:47 I would say that the Ram is far from being gutted, was just inspecting it about 2 weekends ago, and the engine, transmission, controls/other automotive components, seats, many storage racks and nearly all of the electric system is still in the vehicle (including an electric motor mounted on the turret basket), so fortunately it is actually mostly complete from what I’ve seen inside
@whelmy
@whelmy 5 лет назад
to gutted for his standards for an inside the hatch perhaps?
@starwars9876-i4t
@starwars9876-i4t 5 лет назад
@@whelmy I wouldn't say so, a vehicle with a nearly intact electrical system usually means a mostly complete vehicle, since that is generally the first system taken out of a vehicle which is being gutted. Some parts like the machine gun mount, escape hatch and radios are missing, but it is probably as complete (in terms of amount of parts in any condition) as the Panzer 3 in Bovington. However, the vehicle has been sitting out in the tank park, exposed for around 50 to 60 years, so it is not pretty inside, and every part is covered in dust and rust, and some parts like the commander's seat and turret basket are over half eaten by rust. I made a 22 second clip from where the escape hatch was, and most of what you can see is dust in the air. So I wouldn't say it is gutted, even for his high standards, instead it is un-restored, rusty, dusty and gross for someone like the Chieftain to be in, or anyone for that matter.

I lived at Borden as a kid from 1956 to 1961. I was back briefly in 1976 but after that, according to Google Earth, it seems that the PMQs and much of the old base landmarks were gutted. This video had no discernible landmarks that were familiar to me. I was led to understand that the elementary school was now a museum but perhaps that has changed as well. I am hoping to go back either this summer or next.

I've been to that museum many times. CFB Borden is home to Cadet Training Centre Blackdown, which will house over 2000 cadets. From 2016 - 2019, I worked with the two week kids, and each serial would go visit the museum during the 6 weeks the camp was open. Just wanted to point out that at 2:50, the wall on your left are all of the Canadian Forces personnel who have lost their lives since the War in Afghanistan began. The first four pictures in the top left are 4 members of the PPCLI who were killed in a friendly fire incident when an American pilot dropped a bomb on a training area. Also, at 3:10, you walk past a series of posters that list every Canadian who has been awarded the Victoria Cross. It has their pictures and a short blurb about what they went through. If you have one of the staff talk with you about the vehicles, they point out that while the T-55 you show at 9:05 is a Soviet tank, it is actually a German vehicle. If you get into the seat, the controls are labelled in German. The concrete pad at 18:35 was the Hetzer, and the Centurion that you see at 18:53 is the first picture that will pop up if you google Centurion Tank. The last point I want to make is at 19:12, you pan over and talk about the Stuarts that are flanking one memorial. In the background on top of the hill you will see another memorial. That is actually the tomb for General Worthington and his wife.

The Dutch built the YPR-765, built by DAF, based on the US Army's rejected XM765 development of the M113. It looks similar to but is unrelated to the Lynx. The Dutch also operated the Lynx as M113C&V, fitted with a 25mm Oerlikon cannon.

I just watched this video, now I know where I'm driving to this afternoon. Thanks for the reminder! As a cadet and then a militiaman, I spent several weekends at CFB Borden, but somehow never managed to visit the museum. I'll correct that oversight today.

We took the backroads to get there, so we only had about 45 minutes to quickly run through the vehicle hall before they closed. Even so, worth the trip to Borden.

I loved visiting Borden, but I gotta admit: some of their vehicle plaques are grossly misinformed. No, that Centurion ARV is not based on a Sherman. No, the Ram with the hull MG turret is not the "late model".

They re-used the same info plate for two different Centurion examples ... I suspect the curator was on vacation when that one was printed up.

There is a russian museum which has a Tsar tank replica. It is in Lobny, the museum of the story of the tank T-34. It is near Moscow. It is circa 100-150 km away to the north from Kubinka. So, you have two museums to visit when you are in Moscow.

EddieG Diefenbaker inherited the program from the Liberals. The program costs were already out of control. I do not think its fair to constantly blame the man for killing the program. The documentation shows that the Airforce had a hand in axing it. Instead of blaming the Americans for the ending of the program (they certainly saw an opportunity when the costs went thru the roof) we should accept some responsibility as Canadians in this. Remember the British went thru almost exactly the same thing with their TSR2. Escalating costs, diminishing returns etc..,. Before it too was killed.

@@greggougeon4422The Chieftain does work for Wargaming and the Wirbelwind is not in any of their games, and he is probably in Canada on a business trip so he can film inside of a vehicle which is in one of their games (my guess would be the Valentine or the Ram), though it would be nice if he makes a video about it, further raising awareness of the restoration, however I would say it is unlikely

@@greggougeon4422If I many make a correction, there are only 2 Flakpanzer IV "Wirbelwinds" left in the world, the other one being in the Flak Museum somewhere in Germany (well hey, it's still an extremely rare Panzer whether there is only 1 or 2 left in the world!). But out of both Flakpanzers, the Borden example is the most complete internally and by the end of its restoration, it will be the only running and firing, complete Flakpanzer of ANY description in the world (including the Gepard, Mobelwagen, Flakpanzer 1, Kugelblitz, etc.), so it is still an incredible vehicle. And if I may add, Sabot Videos is the official film channel of the restoration (which they have 39 episodes currently going back to April 2017) so at least there is a channel on RU-vid that gives insight into the restoration. As well the project has an official Facebook page called the "Flakpanzer Restoration Project". But out of all these sources, I have the most amount of insight into the project (a little secret of mine, believe it or not, I am a member of the restoration team, and more, my role in the restoration is to document the whole vehicle technically, including reverse engineering parts that need to be refabricated, making assembly manuals for once the vehicle is reassembled, cataloguing each individual part, documenting the restoration as a whole, etc... SHHH!!!!!! DON'T TELL ANYONE!!!). So if you have any further inquiries into the project or the vehicle, you can just ask me =)

Dieppe...a lesson paid for with the slaughter of many Canadian troops.The shingle beach would have defeated any tank .No grip and the stones broke the tracks..The Canadian Sherman losses in the Caen sector to 88,s were also heavy.Thats why these artifacts need to be preserved.The sacrifice of your countrymen is passing from living memory.The Schoolchildren need to see these with video testimony from those who fought in them before the veterans are all gone...Bovington only has a shot up range target of one these Howitzer Churchills .

The engine and transmission for the vehicle is inside of the museum, and you can see it at 7:55 , so some of the vehicle is preserved indoors, and once we find space, hopefully the Churchill, the firefly and the Crab will be moved indoors, and an eventual restoration will be done on those vehicles

Bovington was the same with alot of her Gems outside.They then applied for and got big money from the heritage lottery fund.This paid for many projects such as the restoration of the Tiger and a new workshop.Maybe this museum could do the same.There are some great pieces there.Get some running and do a Tank Fest.
