At sixteen, Anna Wexler had broken away from her Orthodox Jewish community in New Jersey, rejecting its religious doctrine and social restrictions, and severing ties to her family. This led to her running away from home, sleeping on the streets, and experimenting with sex and drugs with friends who had also left the Orthodox world. However, after studying in Israel, her friends had a change of heart and returned to the fold. Feeling betrayed, Anna launches a quest to understand their transformation by following three rebellious Jewish teenagers in their yearlong rite-of-passage journey from high school to Israel. Along the way, Anna is forced back to the roots of her own struggle to understand the meaning of faith and the essence of religion and identity.

I’m a 55 year old woman living in Canada. I’m not Jewish, not religious in any way , although I talk to God every day and am grateful to Him for my life, my children, grandchildren and husband. I spent my late teens and early 20’s very confused and searching for meaning. I wish I’d had an experience like a year in Israel at that time in my life. It would have helped me find my way. I eventually landed on my feet but it was a struggle. What a wonderful film you’ve made. I enjoyed it very much. Lovely people just living life and finding their way. Inspiring even at my age!

I went to Israel for learning around this time. I must say, the documentary is pretty accurate with the phases in Israel. The Americans start to party, because of freedom and drinking age is 18. Then the night life gets boring, and slowly they start going to shiur. Then by the end of it, they are totally different people. It's very rare to see someone not take this path, but it's pretty common with kids off the derek. Frum kids usually stay the path for the most part. It was amazing to see kids who were agnostic in nature, become devoted to g-d. I'm glad you got to experience this through camera.

Thank you for making this movie my story is a bit different but I can relate in many ways. I was born to an ultra-orthodox family in Israel, I was raised as an ultra-orthodox kid, went to Yeshiva at the age of 14 but for me it was very different. In ultra-orthodox society Yeshiva is not for partying and the Rabbis take it very seriously I was expected to study Torah and pray from 8 in the morning until 10 at night (no I'm not exaggerating). At the age of 17 I moved to a Yeshiva in Jerusalem and slowly at night with a lot of secrecy we went out to party, drink alcohol and have fun with friends from Yeshiva. This movie brought a lot of memories because I used to hang out a lot in Jaffa square area and Kikar HaHatulot in Jerusalem, I remember seeing a lot of American teens when we went out (that was around 2007). That same year I had a fight with my Rabbi and he kicked me out of Yeshiva and on that day I started to change, I went straight to the IDF recruitment office which was a walk distance from my Yeshiva and I started the recruitment process. Ultra-orthodox in Israel are extremely against going to the IDF and that exactly why I did it. Fast forward 3 years of service in the military and I was a 21 years old with no education at all, I wanted to go to university but I didn't have any background in math, science, English, then I realized how much they wasted my time and I became very angry with them. So many years of a complete waste of time I didn't learn anything useful I was just brainwashed since I was a little kid. It took me 2 years to study for Bagrut (high school diploma), I moved to the US and got into university. Today I'm 2 semester away from becoming an engineer. Also I'm atheist but I don't hate religious people I just think that it's extremely important to prepare kids to the real world and teach them secular studies I think preventing your kid from acquiring proper education is the worst crime one can commit other then murder. Time is precious and it cannot be given back.
@MissKealoha
@MissKealoha 4 года назад
Congrats. Thats awesome that you have come so far even though you had a late start in real life. Keep it up. You're doing great. I'm also an atheist and I agree with you that it is a top terrible crime to willingly deprive your children of an actual education. That is the only way religion can keep their numbers up, sadly. The less educated the person, the less they will question what they're being told and the more likely they will blindly follow.

Now I live in Israel, mostly looking secular but I like to do some things in private like eating kosher and keeping the Shabbat. The monotheistic life (Judaism, Islam) can keep you grounded and stable. But miserable people think negatively whether religious or not. I think the main challenge is to think positively and believing in a Higher Power can be of help. By the way I'm so happy to see Muslims curious about Jews. All the best!

When I first started watching this video I was not impressed with either Anna Wexler, or any of these kids who seemed shallow, spoiled, selfish, and very much like “rich” kids who could do whatever they wanted. Their parents had the money to send them to Israel and indulge their whims, but all these kids did was do drugs, drink, and screw around, or so it seemed to me. So why was I watching this anyway? I thought it stupid waste of time; and yet, I found myself wanting to see more. Well, I watched to the end, and I am SO happy that I did. I love the way these young people grew and gained new, mature, and deep perspectives. Thank you Anna, for your honesty, courage, and persistence in making this great documentary. I agree. most MOdern Orthodox are relatively well and they are spoiled and are in a bubble. But the parents also deny opportunities for their children to really see things outside their community to learn and grow because the dogma of the community is more important and that combination of course leads to resentment and doesn't give someone a good view of their own religion that should be more then sticking with your own group all day.

It’s horrible.. it’s so prevalent that there are many kids that have herpes visibly on their face but not only that it says on the news they get it on baby’s penis’s from the moyle.. the man who does the brisk, they circumcise the boys and then suck the blood out of their penis through their mouth, which gives the babies herpes…It’s truly horrible.. though it’s not the people in the video.. it’s the Jews that wear black robes too hats with curls.. Also allows/encourages women to be priestesses so that's a plus. I wanted to fit in with one of the mainstream religions so bad but I could never get past that, and all the violence in the books. The parents often can't afford the year abroad to study, and the community provides the funds, usually by direct support to the institutions. The programs are often bare-bones. If a young couple wants to marry and doesn't have the funds (parents can't pay), the community makes sure they have a gown, a hall, everything required. In some communities, the rule is only one musician, so that no one will feel embarrassed if they can't afford a band - removes the urge to compete over display. Same reason our funerals are so plain.

@@alk158 Personally, I felt fortunate to grow up in a variety of environments surrounded by people with different backgrounds. I agree, and it was a big help. One of life's secrets is the importance of being able to talk casually with people you don't know. It also helps to find a community that doesn't emphasize the things you describe as so negative. I asked a traveling Cantor what community he would chose to join after he had seen so many as a guest of the many communities. He had some surprising recommenations. What you described is also in Conservative and Reform congregations. Consider looking into Milwaukee, Postville, Providence, Memphis, Atlanta, or perhaps Seattle. I don't know how Microsoft and Amazon changed the make-up of the community. I visited in 1984 and again in 1989 and it was humble and low key. I didn't get into the U of Washington and feel like I missed out. You probably don't want your kids growing up with a materialistic peer group. Better communities do exist. Good luck.
@alk158

@@talmoskowitz5221 I agree with you. I have couple of Reform bosses who were close to a male Reform Rabbi , in one case a relative, and they were just as fanatical as some Orthodox people I have met that their group is better then the other group and somehow they are "different' and everything bad was the Orthodox fault. I live in NY and at this point I am middle age in my 40's so I don't what is going to be. I except I had a very radical Modern Orthodox family on both sides of my family and in every case either the husband or the wife wants to pretend I don't exist. It is horrible. Also some push racism from a white feminist perspective which is a problem in my family too. As a guy I don't mater. But making me the scapegoat solves nothing. I don't even agree with why you can't have a women Rabbi if that is what the congregation feels is best to lead them. It is a job that is not doing the Temple service that had be done by men who were a cohen.

Most of these kids are greatly confused and scared. They’re at a time in their lives where it’s normal to question everything and rebel. Freedom to do as you please whenever you please is much more attractive. It’s extremely scary for a young person to commit to such strict rules and traditions and lifestyle for an entire lifetime. Some will bolt and completely disassociate themselves from their religion and community and others will do some deep soul-searching for some time and return when they feel they’re ready. I’m not Jewish but I find this documentary very interesting and informative.
