Unpack Boxes in the Basement and Declutter More Things || Minimalism Journey Continues

Unpacking more boxes and sorting out random boxes of stuff on our minimalist journey. Unpacking feels endless right now and it has become exhausting to process each box now. But when I'm done unpacking and decluttering, life feels simple again. Simple living is intentional and purposeful but we still live among boxes in our house. We probably have about 50 (ish) boxes left to unpack and decide what to keep, what to donate, what to sell, what and how to declutter.

Do not dry clean your merino wool sweater. Manufacturers put "dry clean only" on clothes, often unnecessarily, just so you won't sue them. I'm a knitter and knit with merino wool a lot. It should not be dry cleaned. It should be hand washed. Get some wool wash and soak the sweater in a sink full of cool water and some wool wash. Push it up and down in the water a bit with your hands and then let it soak for at least half an hour; however long it takes to make sure the fibres are fully saturated. Drain the sink and fill with clean cool water. Do that a few times till the sweater is rinsed. Push as much water out of the sweater as you can without lifting it. Then, lift the sweater up in a bundle so you are supporting all its weight. Put it in a towel, roll up the towel, then stand on it to press out the excess water. Then lay the sweater out on a clean towel while gently pushing it into its proper sweater shape. Leave it to dry for several days. Hope this helps.

I had a favorite red wool cardigan that I loved. Living at home, my grandma stopped by and could not resists trying out my mom's new wash machine. Well, the only dirty laundry was my basket of "how am I going to clean these items?" Yup, it got washed and put into they dryer. It came out looking like it was made for a preschooler.

Erica. Wash the wool sweater...in shampoo and rinse well. Roll in a towel to get most of the water out. Reshape. And lay flat to fry. I forgot to say. Use your bathtub. To soak the sweater. Do not wring it out. May use several towels to get most of the water out

If your kids ever try to sort Lego again, group by block type rather than colour. It's easier to find the right colour in a box of the same shape, than a specific shape in a box of one colour.

Regarding washing 100% wool clothes. Living in Norway, I do that all the time as we wear wool regularly all winter. I put it in the washing machine on low temperature and run the program for delicates. My machine has a special program for wool. I use a mild laundry detergent. Good luck :-)

Hello to my favourite youtuber! Re: Legos=the bane of my existence. When I was working in a Professional Daycare, most of our Lego came from consignment and second hand shops. The shops would know what our "want/need" list was and save up the Lego for us to pick up in bulk. (It is sold by weight on most hobbyist sites.) For us mom's and sustainable minimalists it is refreshing to know that it usually makes it back to children who can continue to have fun with it. Cheers Erica!

We’re putting our house on the market next week, and looking at going from close to 4,000 square feet to less than 2,000. I keep looking at all this stuff and can’t wait to donate and sell every bit! Now on that wool sweater, unless you want to see if felted, soak it in the sink with Castile soap and warming water. Run the water before you add the sweater. Dunk, don’t twist or agitate. Let it soak for twenty minutes, drain the water, squeeze the excess out, don’t twist. Then lay flat to dry. It will last many years with proper care.

Your uh huh smile laugh (...but we will put it in there) :D - hey office is with office - my theory. I hate having to throw out but when the decision is made for you (ripped, out of shape, mildew, etc.) makes it so much easier. It is so great that you have the friend who is a teacher or the homeschooling coop to share items with in your area. OMG - CRYING about the Legos - God bless you - almost the right of parenthood to go through that - my niece's Lego boxes were perfect, every piece, every piece of paper. Ours, a large garbage bag that we donated...we kept special ones that were created (that I ensured I grabbed before it was pulled apart). :D

I really appreciate how you juggle the ongoing needs of your family with your continuous decluttering process. It can be discouraging when life gets in the way and distractions though pleasant seem to detour or delay finishing. Wash sweater by hand with Wool lite cool water. Then rinse well. Wring. Then lay on towels and roll squeezing and pressing to get most of water out. Then lay to dry. I have a drying rack that I drape over the rungs and put extra dowel rods on. Or you can get or make a drying rack for the bathtub using pvc and some type of plastic screen and lay flat. Don’t be tempted to hang it wet otherwise it will stretch out of shape and definitely don’t dry in dryer otherwise you get a sweater that will then fit your daughter (or Barbie). Definitely donate legos in bin. They go quick! Yay another 4 boxes done. Congrats. Hope you are seling or gifting all the moving boxes and all that paper. What a resource!! For the jumper - it says dry clean or hand wash. It’s pretty easy to hand wash a wooden jumper (I do it with mine when they start to smell). You just clean it in lukewarm water in a laundry or bathroom sink, clean it out with a bar of soap and the rinse it before laying it out to dry somewhere in the shade

Agitation and temperature change shrink wool; not hot water. To wash your merino sweater, run hot water in large dishpan. Add soap.(I use Palmolive dish soap). Gently stir. Then put sweater in water. Push it under but don’t agitate. Leave in water about ten minutes. Remove. Squeeze water out gently while you run clear water for rinsing. Make sure the water is the same temperature. You don’t want to shock it with a temperature change. Put sweater in the rinse water and let it soak for about ten minutes. Keep changing to clear water until no more soap remains in the sweater; always keeping water temperature the same and never agitating. Squeeze water out. Then roll sweater up in a thick towel. I fold one in half lengthwise. You may have to repeat with another dry towel to get it damp dry. Lay it out flat and push into shape. Let dry. I am a hand spinner and knitter/weaver. I’ve washed hundreds of wool items this way. (Just washed a wool jacket today). I wash fleece this way too. Let me know how it turns out. I’m now downsizing my fleece, fiber, and hand spun yarn. It hurts a lot but it has to be done. You are really an encouragement to me.

Hand wash the wool sweater and lay flat on a towel to dry. Merino wool will not need washed often at all, just hang on a hanger after wearing to let it air out. Before you go back into the basement maybe make a list of every item you are actually missing and then when you open a box and are faced with those items- remember that most of the items weren’t anything you were missing and ask yourself “would I buy this item right now if I saw it at the store?” If the answer is NO let it go! You are doing great! I love your channel!

I'm currently packing up my things, and watching you unpack has given me much motivation to discard and donate all those items not used for years - even though they're still perfectly serviceable and it's never entered my mind to declutter those things - now I'm looking at everything and the question is - do I love it to death or have I used it. It's good to have a structure to use to do this - and I have to admit to putting things in boxes, taking them out - then mulling over it - then deciding that's too much time to spend on a saucepan and stick to the rules!

It’s best not to dry clean your sweater. Amazon has Euculan Wash which I use for wool ( I’m a knitter and spinner). You can get a 3.3 ounce bottle which is more than enough. Follow the directions on the bottle. Gather some thick towels. Roll the sweater in one or two towels at a time and press the water out. ( I put something under the roll and walk on it). No ringing or twisting. Because your sweater is thick, you’ll need several towels. Dry flat so air gets to all sides. I use cooling racks since I don’t have a drying rack. I’m If you can, initially let it dry outside (where birds don’t do flyovers). Then inside. Never stretch. It will take a while but as long as there’s good air circulation it will be fine. You’re so fortunate to have such a beautiful hand knit sweater!

Some observations about moving from my experience: 1) every house is different so you sometimes need to reorganize things differently. You can't always transplant the entire content of a certain room from one house to another. I wonder if that's why the office has been a dumping ground. 2) The decorations suit different houses. The things for my light airy apartment just fade away in our darker heavier house. 3) sometimes a house move coincides with a change of life stage, so your needs will change completely. You might go from the newlyweds apartment, to the first small family home, to the big family home to the retirement condo.

For dry clean only (what exactly I choose to do depends on what it is and the fiber content), I wash either by hand with cold water and a gentle natural soap or cold gentle in the washer with mild natural detergent, and dry it by either air drying (laying flat or hanging) or putting it in the dryer on low. If washing by hand, rolling it up in a towel helps get more of the water out (I roll it up then sit on it on a firm surface - works great for me). Hope that helps.

Anxiety attack! I did the exact LEGO experiment 😬 that you tried. It was terrible😥 for everyone. I have four kids that I homeschool also so I have enjoyed watching your journey towards minimalism. I am five years into the minimalism journey. We are on our last plastic tub( 9 tubs) of memorabilia. I am enjoying all the time that it has given me and my husband to spend with our kids and the extra money is nice too!

I clean wool in the washing mashine! Even my big wooly norwegian jumpers! Either i use the wool/handwash setting which is basically 20degrees Celsius and low spin, or i use the delicates setting (30 deg c) if i have washed the item before and i know it will be fine as it seems to clean it better and leave it less wet. But i always let it dry flat on a drying rack rather than a tumble dryer!

I would not hesitate to machine wash the wool sweater 😊 gentle cycle, cold water, woolite detergent. Gentle spin and flat dry. The wool will cope. Clothing wash instructions are overly careful. You just need to know a little about the materials. Colored wool could be more problematic because the dye can be sub-par. But natural looking wool, no problem.

Hand wash the cardigan Andy gave you. Then place in washing machine for spin cycle only. Rinse, then spin again. It is quick and easy - and much nicer (and cheaper!) than dry cleaning. You can buy "Wool Wash" which is great. But ordinary liquid laundry detergent is fine. I soak my wool items overnight in COLD soapy water. Then it just requires a quick "Swish" around before spinning and rinsing.

Hi Erica, you are doing a great job of the decluttering, your arron cardigan can be washed on a woollen wash with something like dreft and flat dryed, but cold water only.

Almost anything that says dry clean only can be washed with water. I just do wool sweaters by hand with Woolite. I put several layers of towels on a counter or table and put the wrung out sweater on the towels, roll the sweater up in the top towel and then put it on the floor and step on it to get the water out. Then lay the sweater back on the towels to dry. Check a few times to reshape etc. I wouldn't hesitate to wash the cardigan from Andy, cold water, mild soap.

I always try to buy secondhand Legos, so definitely donate them. Lego builds can be extremely expensive, and sometimes kids just want to have more variation in the pieces that they already own. Besides, not having an instruction manual to follow allows children to use they own creativity and imagination to build things.

When it comes to Legos unless it's still actively innocent I would just say that sets that are broken down just need to become free for all Legos. I like when kids just build things creatively with Legos. My kids do have a few sets of they built but then we just keep them built and then we got like a big box of them for them to just do stuff and then my daughter sorted out by color herself. 😂 I think the best way to store Legos is a huge shallow bin underneath the bed and then you can just slide it out when the kid wants to play and then slide it back in when they're done.

You can hand wash merino wool in a eucalyptus wool wash in cool water. Slosh it around in the bucket and gently squeeze the excess water out then rinse in cool water and gently squeeze again. Place it on a towel and roll it up to get more water out then unroll and lay flat to dry. Don’t put merino in the dryer.

Erica, I have been enjoying your unpacking journey. We move often too and decluttering has made moves so much easier! Right? Have you guys considered for your next move, just packing the boxes yourselves? Seems like it would save you a lot of time on the unpacking end. And you would actually know what was in the boxes. Once you declutter this "unpacking" round, it will be pretty easy to pack. :)

I would purchase Dr. Bonner's Castile liquid soap which you can purchase at the grocery store. It is a very mild vegetable-based cleaner that you can get without any fragrance or lavender scent. Also, The Laundress out of New York has a Wool & Cashmere Shampoo that works great on wool and cashmere sweaters. Both are very gentle with no harsh chemicals or chemical smells. Wash in slightly warm water and soak for 30 minutes; rinse; and gently squeeze out access and roll in a towel to get the access water out and flat dry. You shouldn't have to wash wool too often.

In Germany our washing machines have a special wool program. Maybe yours in the US as well? It is with cold water, wool detergent and gentle cycles. I would never let it dry-clean or put in the dryer.

Watching this I saw a lot of games being kept - just how many do you need? Time to contemplate the total numbers! Agree with others that you should wash your wools and probably a lot of things that say "dry clean only" - just be sensible - gentle and minimal soap (and scent free soap not detergent). Drying woolen goods flat not on a hanger too! Good luck. One box at a time - that's the way to do it!

I would hand wash the sweater. Soak in cool-warm water with some Castile soap or Euclan and let it soak for 30 mins. You can swirl it around gently in the water but don't agitate it too much. Gently squeeze the water out, don't wring it, and then lay it out flat to dry. Turn it every few hours and voila. A clean sweater with the wool well protected and minimal environmental impact 👍 I prefer castile soap instead of Euclan because the latter is scented and can leave a film feeling on the garment if you use too much. I'm sensitive to scents though so you might find it ok - plus Castile has lots of other uses around the home, such as home made laundry detergent

For your wool sweater: hang it in inte bathroom while you take a shower so it will be gently steamed. Then hang outside (preferably on a sunny day in the sun) to dry. That will refresh it.
@carriejohnson8209

Wool doesn't have to be laundered very often. If you hang it to air it should be fine. If you must wash it use something like Woolite and then rinse it and roll it in a towel to get out the excess water, use another towel until it's not dripping then lay it out flat to dry. Wool is so easy to care for I never dry clean my wool items. Also, you will find if you wear all natural fibers you will not have B O. Plastic clothing does not allow you to breath and creates bacteria that makes you smell. Just a little info that will help in doing less laundry.

Hi from New Zealand, home of merino. Does your washing machine have a gentle/woolens cycle or hand wash cycle? Do it on that WITH wool friendly/silks/delicates detergent. Dry flat, no dryer.
@mindart237
@mindart237 3 года назад
i wouldn't put the wool sweater in the dryer. Wool tends to felt and shrink when put under high temperature and pressure and the moving in the dryer is enough to do this job. If your washing machine has a special program for wool then you can try this. But some things are more sensitive to this procedure. When i'm not sure if something is going to make it through the washing program then i turn it inside out and put a single item in a laundry mesh bag. After this you can dry the item horizontal on a drying rack otherwise the wet sweater will lenghten through hanging.

Depending on the material I usually wash cold on gentile cycle and hang dry my dry clean, but I usually don't buy much that can't be thrown in the washer. I'd look up care instructions for wool though I heard it has a habit to shrink easily.
