Unpack + Declutter || SENTIMENTAL ITEMS from 30+ YEARS AGO || Part 2

I am tackling another unpack + declutter and this time I'm purging sentimental clutter! Looks like about 25 bins were sorted and set aside on previous decluttering rounds as sentimental and I aim to minimize this count down to 3 or so. It's hard to assign a number before actually decluttering!
Sentimental decluttering tags along guilt and fear of decluttering. How do you handle sentimental clutter and decluttering?

I “love” a lot of things - I go to museums and shops and other people’s houses and think “ooh, I love that!” but it doesn’t mean I have to own it. Once you own it it becomes harder to let it go. Realizing that I can’t and don’t need to own everything I love has been very freeing.

this was a frustrating thing to teach my family. I would say "oh, I like this. it's pretty." and they would say "we'll get it for you." I would then have to say "I don't want it. I just like it." And sometimes, I'd get it for christmas or a birthday, and then I'd have to go "oh, thanks." And then I'd end up donating it within a week (I usually process unwanted gifts within 5 days). I ask for specific things that I really want and/or need. Unfortunately, no one wants to buy me THOSE things. LOL

Same, a lesson I have been learning the past year ish. Of course, there are things that I do love and do purchase, still, but my purchasing/acquiring frequency has dropped sharply. I used to have bad FOMO with Bath & Body Works. Now i have pared down my collection to what I actually use and I am ENJOYING what I own. I also don't have a massive hoard. I have 7 body washes - 6 of which are discontinued limited edition and my genuine favorites, being the only reason I "hoarded" them. When they are used up, they're used up, and I will savor them while they are used and not keep them until they go rancid. I put much more deliberation into what I buy now -- and, if for some reason I buy something and don't love it or need it, it goes, either returned for a refund or given to someone else. I don't let the guilt make me hold on to things now. I look at it as paying for the experience, not the object permanence, since nothing material is really, truly permanent in this world.

Erica, you hit it right on the head by saying “Sitting in a bin in a basement is not honoring the sentimentality of these items. They need to be out in our house and being used and loved and honored. If I can not do that, why am I keeping it?” Thank you for saying that. I’ve never understood why so many people don’t follow this. You’ve grown so much since the beginning of your journey. I dont know if its possible to be proud of someone you don't know, but if it is, I am so proud of you! I began watching your channel right before you started decluttering. At first, I used to watch your decluttering videos and literally yell, "Why are you keeping that!?! When in doubt, throw it out." (Or donate but that doesn't rhyme.) Anyway, you've come a long way, baby! As I was watching you this time, this Bible verse came to mind: "When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things." You did awesome!

For seasonal decor I just like to bring in fresh seasonal flowers. I have two vases that stay in the same place and right now they’re occupied by tulips. In the summer it’ll be hydrangeas or some other summery flower. Fall and winter can be twigs, foliage or a splurge on something exotic or out of season to help you through the drear. t’s a nice treat to yourself and reflects the seasonality without adding clutter.

Sentimental stuff gets easier to get rid of the more you do it. I had a very hard time doing it at first and now I am down to a very small box that I go through every year to see if I can get rid of more. I always think to myself that the person that gave it to me probably does not even remember giving it to me and does not care if I get rid of it or not.

After tackling that first box earlier this month, I lived with the decisions for a bit and didn't feel regret. This last week, I've had this mindset shift about sentimental. Your mind shift is good to see as you face this stuff. And yes sitting in a box in a storage place does no one any good. Plus the cost of moving all of this. I had a Madam Alexander doll when I was little that my mom wouldn’t let me play with. I kept it more than 30 years. When I started my decluttering way of life I came upon her with no arms or legs because the string or rubber bands had rotten. I didn’t even care about her because I couldn’t play with her. Crazy.

Here in Europe, we are less interested in seasonal decorations than our US peers. Xmas & Halloween (Easter to a lesser extent) are notable exceptions particularly where there are young kids in the house. For me, all of the seasonal decoration stuff is part of our excessive consumerism & devotion to plastic. I now make our Xmas door wreath or I support a local florist by buying a "real" wreath. I recently donated heaps of St Patrick's Day/Easter/Halloween/Xmas decorations & crafts to a local school, where they will actually be used. As you say "use it or lose it". However, I am in agreement with you about saving the Swiss music box & clock as your kids ot grandkids might like to have them in the future.

I'm in the UK. We don't do seasonal decorations in my house. We don't even do Christmas decorations because we don't celebrate it. I have a few knitted pumpkins that I have about the house but thats because my mum knitted them for me and they are cute, they don't get put away they just move from time to time. The whole 'decorate for the season' thing feels very made up by the companies pushing their plastic rubbish at the general public to me.

I'm in New Zealand and we don't really celebrate a lot of the things that Americans do. Halloween is pretty much a nonevent here. There's costumes and decorations around to buy but most people here don't bother. They didn't grow up with it so it hasn't caught on here. Easter seems to lean mostly towards chocolate and no one stores that for 30 years lol, or the church goers have church celebrations. We don't have Thanksgiving either. Christmas is really the only thing that generates a lot of consumer stuff. Tinsel and plastic yuck. I try to avoid shopping at Christmas, too busy and noisy and too much visual clutter in the shops. I do like to decorate seasonally but it's using natural things we find and bring into the house. Twigs, feathers, flowers, pebbles, sea shells etc. My kids loved going on a 'treasure' hunt for natural things to decorate with when they were little. My daughter used to bring in the cicada shells from the trees too as part of our decorations lol. Bug shell decorating 😂

There is 1 thing from my childhood I still have: the Winnie the Pooh Bear, given to me when I was born, by my Uncle. He has since passed away. oh, and do you see your relationship changing with modern/current decor? I'm thinking of the blue trucks or Rae Dunn or the words items (like America the Beautiful). I am not attracted to this type decor, in general. It seems like it falls in the "too much" category for me, and once I see it every day for awhile I don't even see it anymore. It's also annoying that every year there is a new set of stuff that is on trend. I am an older person so this might be part of it. I always think, "is this something I can see at a thrift store or yard sale immediately", like trying to recoup some money to buy into the next fad. I am also semi lazy and don't really enjoy changing out decor regularly. Anyway, I always see folks decluttering with a goal of decorating at the end, but I'm always thinking about the useful items I want to have easier access to as my goal. (I do think of useful as beautiful, particularly in the kitchen. Clearing counters in order to put up word plaques, fake plants, etc. is NOT my goal even if it is cute and trendy) Anyway, I wondered how your relationship with decor might be evolving.

When I did my major declutter I got rid of all of my seasonal decorations with the exception of a few fall items and a curated selection of Christmas decor. I found that all these decorations that are only put up for such a small amount of time each year are not worth having to store and organize. I also got rid of knick knacks. I have only kept ornaments that have a special meaning behind them. Got rid of most sentimental items including old year books and memorabilia. I take photo's before I donate or throw away things I once loved. This is an easy way to have my memories without the things and clutter. I also do this with my children's art projects. I really enjoyed this video because when we go through our things it does bring up good and sometimes bad memories that we have forgotten about. We also miss our loved ones who have passed on.

Iam just finally getting to my sentimental stuff and is so hard . I used to live in England but moved to Australia when I was twelve, had to get rid of heaps of toys etc to move here so what I have left is dear to me, also in the past ten years all my family have pasted away so been keeping things of theirs to , thinking of taking photos and keeping one or two special things from each person .....hope it works

For seasonal decor, I decided to downsize to only decorating a 3 tiered-tray. It can only hold some small items and mini lights, and is displayed on my kitchen table. I put each season's items in a ziploc freezer bag with the season/holiday written on it. Easy to switch out and adds a little change and fun to the house without being overwhelming and too much work. I use some sentimental items on it as well (bunny statue etc.).

This is such a great idea. I feel bad letting go of my seasonal decor only because my young kids love it, but it’s just too much for me. I might just have to do this!

I love this, I've started doing this each year and pairing things down as I'm ready to let them go. We recently downsized from 1600 square feet to 860 square feet and I would not have been able to do this without inspiration from decluttering channels like you and Dawn from the Minimal Mom. I appreciate you sharing this journey with us and the joy you show in this video is so heartwarming. Thank you!

I worked in a gift store and "paid" in Precious Moments in their heyday late 70s/early 80s....had so many - lucky enough to auction and make money a few years ago. I also LUGGED boxes in bins from houses/storage rooms - kept a few very precious and important pieces that I display or put out for Christmas...the rest...bye bye. How much change was in the bank? I love the Swiss music box - the work and the colors still so vibrant! GOOOOOOOO, Erica!

The empty bin dance made me giggle! Good for you for cleaning that childhood knick-knack stuff out. I did that about a year ago, but now you're making me think about doing it again. *Edited to add, there's a reason why Marie Kondo recommends saving sentimental until last. Your decluttering muscles are built up and ready. I'm really proud of the journey you've taken, and that I've taken too. We've come a very long way!

That's a big weight being lifted off your shoulders that you no longer have to manage and move! Also, the curly girl method and finger curling your hair looks fantastic! It reminds me of the many spiral perms I used to get back in the 80s. Oh the money I wasted on perms, curlers, and hair spray back then.

Tough question and however you answer it is the correct answer. Are you really a person that changes out your decor seasonally? I ask because, I always think I would like to be that person but, the fact is, for me, those seasonal items never seem to make it out of the bins during the season in which they should be displayed. Christmas would be the exception but, other than that, I’ve found that I just need season-neutral decor that looks good no matter what season it happens to be because I just can’t get my act together for seasonal decorating. Not sure if my situation does anything to simplify yours but, if it does, that would make me happy. You’ve come such a long way and I am proud of you. Keep up the good work.
