In 2017, Parker introduces a limited series of only 77 Maki-e Fountain Pens but at a price of $1000 per pen but their beauty is unmatched. Parker dubbed this pen as デュオフォールド 蒔絵「流水」or Duofold Makie Running Water/Water Stream. Interestingly, this pen is only limited to inside Japan and has made into quite a prize possession of any pen lovers. Re-sellers have often this pen for sale at 3 or 4 times the original price.
Maki-e (蒔絵 or sprinkled picture) is Japanese lacquer sprinkled with gold or silver powder as a decoration using a makizutsu or a kebo brush. To create different colors and textures, Maki-e artists use a variety of powders including gold and silver. Bamboo tubes and soft brushes of various sizes are used for laying powders and drawing fine lines.
Horikomi and Haritsuke are the inlays and appliqués of the lacquer world. Raden happens to be most famous, using the shimmering and iridescent shells from oysters, mussels and abalone. Beyond the just the use of shell, however, a vast array of materials have also found their place with lacquer. Eggshells in rankaku, foil in heidatsu, wire, paper, gemstones or wood may all be used in the array of techniques in this category.
This pen was created as combination of these 2 advances technique of Japanese Urushi lacquer. Since ancient times, water has come from the tallest mountains of the world, creating small stream before combining into rivers. The cap the Parker Duofold Maki-e Water Stream emulate these many small streams with Raden running from the top. The streams finally meet and merge together creating the Raden rivers with banks of Maki-e. The Raden and Maki-e are blended together, complementing and elevating each other to reach a harmonious level of unparalleled elegance.
