Snapshots for VMs?! Hell yes! Does the filesystem the vdisk resides on matter? Is this like a ZFS snapshot or just a VM snapshot like ESX would do to any disk designated? I can see myself using this stuff and playing with it for sure but probably in another chassis than my primary. :)
The VM settings should have option to just assign number of cores rather than pinning them. You can do this in XML but would be nice to have that in gui.
Great video Ed. Informative as ever and I am going to install the beta on my spare server. Look forward to more vids on Unraid 7 both on Uncast and your own show.
Man, seeing your face in real life vs hearing just your voice...thought you were much much older going off the voice in your videos. Nonetheless, awesome content that you've been pushing out over the year! Keep it up!
Can we or will we ever get an option to add a share as a mounted drive in a VM through the UnRaid gui and not have to fiddle with other settings somewhere? Is this even theoretically possible? Can we add ZFS pools to the array? That would be interesting. Let’s say if we have 2 three hdd pools, so six total drives, and each is z1. So that’s the storage capability of 4 of those drives. Let’s say each pool has 10tb drives so each pool has 20tb total storage. It’s be cool to be able to still add those pools to the array and have a parity drive that is 20tb. 😂 I’m sure this would be wildly impractical, but it would still be cool in theory. Keep in mind that I obviously don’t know enough to be able to tell if this is possible.
Thanks for another great video SIO 👍😊 Some really great looking updates and the future of Unraid sounds exciting! I'm currently running 5x SSD's in an XFS Unraid Array (LincStation N1). I thought about setting up as a POOL but I don't want to lose the ability to increase the size of my storage by adding new disks. Once Unraid incorporates the (hopefully near future) ZFS RaidZ expansion capability, I'd luv to revisit my setup 👍
Glad to see that arrays are optional! My main setup is 8x22TB hard drives in a RAID 10 pool, so no longer needing a single drive to maintain an array is great! Also appreciate being able to have two pools used for primary and secondary storage and Mover can work between them.
does this new version of ZFS support more than one data vdev in a single pool? or is that still not a thing for unraid. only having a single data vdev in the pool really hurts the read and write speeds of the array.
Before i could use same gpu for docker container and VM , when i used to start VM tye gpu used to get psssthrough to VM and when VM shutdown gpu back to containers , but now i have to manually do bind vfio at boot to psssthrough gpu to VM than unbind reboot again to use in docker container ..😢
Noooo I did not see pools that could be jbods or unraids. Also being able to and cache drives to any pool. ZFS is cool but it really really does not fit the use case of the home gamer. You will have lots of people crying once they realize there is no way to recover your data form still good drives. As someone who uses lots of questionable drives that I only use in shares that are for data I don't care if I lose have the confiance that if i lose those 3 drives the rest of my data will still be intact is really important. Also with the new refurbished market for seagate drives I expect drive failures will become more common.
Loving the new VM changes. I also think ill stick with normal unraid array with double parity backup running a single zfs disk to make snapshots of all my SSD's. Being able to use random capacity drives is key for me. I just need to finally figure out how to get GPU passthrough working for a windows VM and I can finally start playing some of my games again. Its a total S-show with outdated tutorials from various sources lol. Im stuck with virtual GPU :(
Thanks for this. Are you buy any chance going to re-do any of your old tutorials for version 7? Like for instance, making Nextcloud accessible from the internet? I could never get that to work.
Raid Z is a good start but totally bad to use. Why would i add a brand new HDD to have safety but at the same time have my HDD running empty. It’s getting hours for no reason which can give me a fault safety HDD. U gotta rethink this concept.
Never get rid of the unraid array zfs is not a good fit in a home environment - the flexibility of mixed disk sizes in a home environment means costs are kept down etc
Paying for a license should give me the option to decide to use my m2 intel ax211 WiFi card in my nas. If I get trouble I can plug the lan cable in when ever I want.
my god have i been hoping for some of these for some time! I only have a few drives so caching is such a game changer since some of my steam library is stored on my array. On top of that i'm also super hyped for the new VM improvements, since this is how i'm running my gaming pc!
Hey space could i please request you do an updated win 98 video - would be good to see for sure. Presumably you are using a pcie to pci bridge for your voodoo and soundcard for your win98 vm cheers
Fantastic presentation, I'm curious when creating a snapshot is there a way of saving it to another location rather than the default vm location? my NVME space can be limiting
spaceinvader did you feel goofy staring at empty space for the segment in the beginning of the video where you are staring at the hologram of the unRAID dev/rep?
31:50 would be cool if the templates could be shared with other people via a link or such and when the recipient puts in the template link, it downloads and thats it.
A bit of a sad development actually. I don’t understand why people choose Unraid to use ZFS or virtualisation. Other solutions already does this. Unraid could focus on the things others don’t do.
Please god tell me that the improved dashboard will be responsive soon!! We've been dying for that functionality, because it's no longer 2006 and people use devices of many sizes. It's practically unusable on a mobile device--takes good eyes and VERY careful fingers.
Great improvements, can't wait for Unraid 7! The option to migrate VMs is actually really beneficial for those running 24/7 services like a mail server. Live migration between two Unraid servers would be fantastic. I might even consider migrating my Proxmox cluster to Unraid if there were an option like "Automatically migrate VMs on server shutdown/reboot. Keep up the good work ❤
Or for Home Assistant! When this is ready I'm absolutely going to set up a "critical services backup" low-power machine for household needs. That would be clutch for multi-day outages where I'm juggling batteries and generators.
27:50 Wait, can we run older GPUs in a virtual machine? I have an Nvidia GT210, will it run in a Windows 10 VM for example? When I tried to set this up, I got a black screen too.
@@SpaceinvaderOne Thank you! Sorry, turns out I had an Nvidia 8500 GT video card. Unfortunately, I have strange artifacts when I boot into a virtual machine (Win XP). The image consists of console characters that was previously on the screen from unRAID. This only happens on the boot screen, in the system I only see a black screen. Connecting in parallel with VNC shows that the video card has error status code 10 in Device Manager. Drivers are installed manually, the installer did not let me install them correctly. I also tried enabling VFIO for the video card, also played with "unsafe interrupts" for it. Even pulled the vbios from it thanks to your script, using it didn't do anything either. Have you had similar problems? Maybe the problem is that this is the first and primary video card in the server?
With ZFS SLOGs and metadata vDevs now being a thing in the near future, can you use the same drives for both? Say you have a mirror vDev of two NVMe drives and you want to use that same vDev as both the metadata special device AND the SLOG? I'm limited in the number of devices I can connect to my server.
Technically it is possible within TrueNAS by partitioning the devices first. However it is strongly discouraged. I would be surprised if Unraid supports such a config within the GUI.
@@joelfrojmowicz we have to get through the beta's and rc's be for we get to stable releases my guess would be in about 3 to 4 months or less depends on how many bugs and things that need fixing and features that they add and other things like that'
I live in the UK and here the normal spelling is "Favourites" here. However in the US its "Favorites." Neither is incorrect, they are simply regional variations.
