I am fascinated by the concept of using robotics to help older adults deal with the lack of laborers who are willing to work in assisted living centers. Wow. This just may work.

I"ve watched many documentaries on Japan, artificial things, robots and their effect on the Japanese society. But I've never watched anything like this. Waldermar, if you're reading this, Thank You. You've helped me understand the world better, one documentary at a time.
Waldemar went to retro Japan to marvel about electronics when Japan is living in the past, not the future. Robot toys are not the future, nothing is more boring than a toy that obeys all orders and has no personality. I grew up raising and training animals on a ranch and continued in the cities I lived in and now live on my farm again with...living animals who have all sorts of personalities and skills and are a constant wonder even the wild animals at my feeders. I tame them and interact with them all.
I love all of Waldemar's videos but pawning off one that is 22 years old but with today's upload date on it really is bad form. Please include filming dates and other relevant information in the title or description so that your viewers don't feel duped. That's just cheating.
To be fair, Perspective put these videos up under license. So they are not making the content. If you want the production information, then visit Waldemar's iMDB page.
@@danielboard9510 Whether or not the videos are posted under license, it would be better if *Perspective* included the production information, including the year, in the video title or at least the description. That way viewers would not be surprised by the age of the video (as some commenters are here).

(I think it would also be good if the channel owner(s) made it easier to watch the Januszczak videos that were made as a series _as a series,_ that is, in order, but this video isn't one of those.) Maybe I'll write to them and let them know - they never respond to these comments.
Lucy Worsley is very entertaining and charming. Waldemar's docs are really awesome, especially the ones about art. I also really like any doc with Michael Wood and Bettany Hughes. Was also a big fan of James Burke's 'Connections' series.
I think the difference is, in the West, "artificial" tends to be unhealthy and, or destructive. It seems, in the East, they've found a way to be creative without also being destructive or unhealthy.
Artificial can absolutely benefit! Just depends on the issue. In many ways natural anything is always better. Things you USE can be great! Things you ingest or absorb? Bad. Anything that actually goes IN the body definitely poses more of a risk.

*Perspective* really is negligent-there’s no getting around it-when it comes to providing the original release date (and other information) of each of the videos it posts on RU-vid. This one, first released in 2000 under the title “Travels in Virtual Japan,” may be the oldest so far but the Januszczak videos posted on this channel range from that year to 2018 (the video about US art). It would be better, as *andybaldman* says, if the channel owners provided more complete information.
Wal, I lived, loved and worked there in the 80s and 90s. Yours is the first doc (even though it's dated!) that focuses on what any Japphile knows: the Japanese are from another, more advanced planet. And of course any Japanese person worth their salt will tell you the same thing - after a few beers....

I saw the this show years ago. Perspective picked them up, so they can drive you mad with all the ads. If you have a smart tv, cast the video to your tv, then use your remote too zap through the ads.

Loved this. Two thoughts: from what Waldemar tells us the robots are not new technology to the Japanese but a continuation of millennia of robot development; and when I took a look at the phones I realized that this is very old and I wonder where my computerized toilet and puppy are.
This seems like it's 20 years old what with the flip phone and bizzarre camera lens attachment. It's not that old, of course, given Wally's apparent current age. And this platform shoe and bell bottom fad I wore in the Early 70's here in America. Good show.
In a way (it never occurred to me) my phone ,and my connection to the world via the internet are really a giver of stability and friendship for me..along with my live cat as a pet,I find comfort in knowledge and learning and have not had any desire to watch "fake" tv in years....other than "The Walking Dead " and "Game of Thrones' that is...I would fit perfectly in with modern Japan...
I enjoy this channel, and Waldemar's profiles particularly. My question for this episode is, will the more technologically advanced countries really be better off on the day the robots rebel? 🤔😅😱🤖
Read Asimov's book about Solaria. When humans don't need each other and use mainly robots, eventually all the humans cease to procreate and die off leaving robots behind. Japan has one of the very lowest birth rates in the world and the population is already dropping, not growing and when the WWII super elderly die and their first generation of post war babies die of old age, the population of Japan will be below half of what it is today.
I enjoyed his closing comments about Japan and the UK. I can't help but think that maybe, us British are stuck in our colonial past and Japan, were thrown into the future by the Enola Gay.

OMG ,this is sooo creepy,I can’t believe these sick people replace human companionship with robots .One day we will have a robot in our home that’s going to go haywire and is going to stab us in the neck while we’re asleep.
If memory serves, Oscar Wilde had some searching things to say about the artificial vs. the natural. I believe he privileges the artificial over the natural: the importance of the artificial as a veil of meaning which the artist places over the face of nature. Because the in-articulate facts of nature cannot speak, those philistines who would strip away that veil to find the literal truth behind it must always be disappointed to find…nothing. Need to re-read that essay.
