Thanks, I sometimes leave the back "as is" if it has a maker's mark on back. At the very least I will oil the dried out wood.

@@BGCB261 Thanks for Subscribing! The surf prep is really great for getting into tight spots, and for anything rounded as well. But I used (and still do) a regular 'ol orbital sander all the time!

Yes, you're right on treating the bottom and backs of the pieces. I ususally sand them and spray them with lacquer or shellac. I sand around all the markings in order to conserve them as well. Good work!!!!

All those people out there fascinated with chalk paint saying "what's the big deal... you can always just take the paint off if you don't like it..." have never sat with a dental pick pulling paint out of wood grain at ten o'clock at night... This is beautiful. I am so happy you saved it. It's not just a lovely piece, it is so much more than pretty when it's saved from a landfill ❤

I was trying to get it back to its original state. I think on the original the legs would have been toned to match the rest but I liked the difference!

Hi, You're doing God's work rescuing this piece. Really really nice job. It looks terrific! Helpful hint if you put a piece of painters tape over the missing veneer then trace the shape it will give you a near perfect template. Thanks

A great restore...I love the fact that you didn't tone the handles and base. The contrasting wood tones makes the piece seem more modern while keeping its character intact. The matching grain on the door panels is especially nice. Your father-in-law must really love it!

My father-in-law was downsizing to a much smaller place so having a small buffet to go with his existing furniture was important. I think it worked out wonderfully!

What a very lucky Buffet! Poor thing… if it had feelings it would have jumped with joy from getting that paint off! That was a lot of work you did and what a beautiful result. Must have invested a ton of time into this piece! But wow what wonderful result!

What a beauty. I personally don't like when MCM furniture is painted. Paint hides the beauty of the grain and color of the wood and cheapens it. Furniture today is definitely not made to the standards of days gone by, sadly.

Mid century is very popular, that pieces only risk to refinish was what was under the paint. One layer and with minor imperfections it turned out great. Something like that does not usually sit on the tree lawn for more than an hour. Free makes it worth the effort particularly for what is a popular style today. Haden Hall on the lawn is not something to walk by, that piece sells for close to a grand as it is a highly desirable mid century name of vintage Danish Modern.

Hi Cindy, the tool was "Allway Tools Soft Grip Contour Scraper Set with 6 Blades (CS6)" I bought it from Amazon. It's come in very handy! 🙂

Thanks! The maker is Haddon Hall. It was popular in Canada in the 1960’s and could be bought thru the Eaton’s catalogue.

Gorgeous. Why does the base have a different grain pattern… is it a different species of wood?

Thank you! Yes the bottom of the piece was elm or something similar. Often on mid-century pieces the base is a different species of wood than the main body (probably cheaper to produce). The were toned and lacquered at the factory to match the walnut grain on the main body but I decided not to tone it. I liked the contrasting wood. I think it gives it a modern vibe!
