On the fourth planet in the Gryphon system, Na Pali, the deeply religious, primitive Nali, live in peace and worship the gods.
Unfortunately, Na Pali is one of a few planets in the universe rich in Tarydium, a blue crystal-like element used to make weapons and for power sources. While irrelevant to the Na Pali, it is prized by massive mining corporations like Liandri. Along with its incredible value, it also has a significant gravitational pull.
Believing themselves to be the naturally superior race of the galaxy, the reptilian Skaarj, from Skrath, have reunited their disparate clans to create the Skaarj Empire, with plans to conquer the entire galaxy.
They have invaded and easily taken over the pacifist Nali, whose religion forbids them to use violence. They have enslaved the entire planet and are using them to mine for Tarydium, to give the Skaarj a massive military force.
The religious Nali believe the Skaarj are demons cast down on them by angry gods as punishment. Taking solace in prayer, the Nali pray to the gods to send them a messiah.
It might just be a coincidence then, that the mysterious Prisoner 849 is aboard the UMS Vortex Rikers, the rankest prison transport vessel this side of The Milky Way. Transporting prisoners to a remote prison moon, the ship is about to fly through Na Pali’s enhanced gravitational field.
