Unreal Resin Castings

While working from home over the course of last year, a few friends and I designed some Magical Mushrooms. Injection molding was not really an option for something this complex so I dove into resin casting and a process called vacuum casting. After inventing a mold box unlike I've ever seen before, a short run was started. Throughout that process, this video was filmed. Enjoy the video and if you like the product, check it out at cruciblecompany.com (free wallpaper downloads at bottom of front page)

I love the setup with the mold housings. If you remove the air vent at the top and instead poured from the base of the stem and cast the resin under pressure you could get bubble free resin casts with very little post processing(just cutting any extra off the stem base itself). These are beautiful and it was definitely a fun process to watch this series!
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 2 года назад
More great ideas! I really like the idea of not having the vent on the top side. That would save a good amount of cleanup work, for sure. One of the next steps is to decide on the best approach for filling the mold after vacuum has been reached, rather than at before that process begins. That's how professional vacuum casting cabinets work but one of those may not be in the budget. Thanks again for the comments!

@@The3DHandyman A quick look through Amazon gave me a 12V DC solenoid valve ($10) plus a 5-24V remote controlled relay ($15) and a 12V battery you salvage from a hand tool that would probably fit the bill for the purpose of starting the molding process only after degassing. If you want to go real hobby-level, you could just 3D print a stopper that fits the bottom of your funnel and has an absurdly long arm that reaches the side of the vacuum pot and holds a magnet, then use a magnet from outside of the pot to jostle that arm out of the way when you want to start the resin pour. I’m really loving this series you’re making! Keep up the amazing work!

@@DaveDDD Thanks for the ideas Dave! I will definitely post a video about an idea just like this in the next few months. It's all about degassing and then filling, as you said. Lets just say magnets may be involved! Haha Happy to hear you are enjoying the series!

Beautiful work. Earned a new sub. Shocking there's only 5k views currently, but seems the Algorithm has picked it up and and is recommending it now so hopefully you'll see those numbers grow rapidly. Looking forward to the retail release, I know several people in my life that would just love to get some. Much respect for the commitment and persistence in the pursuit of making the highest quality product you could achieve! Hats off to you sir. Well done!

This is a great series of videos on how to design, prototype and make an intricate product that has different materials. Amazing work! I’ve been on a similar journey myself :) You probably gave an immense amount of thought to the process but I just wanted to share a few tips from my experience. I had a similar type of two part silicone mold that I had to cast many times. After I made the first perfect mold, I made master molds of the two parts individually so I could make faster and more silicone molds. Also, I switched to Liquid Glass resin from Super Epoxy Systems. I think it is the best with UV resistancy and the parts are super clear. Because it needs 72 hours to cure, I don’t even have to pressure cast or vacuum, the bubbles just rise to the top. Good luck with the project!
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 2 года назад
Great info! Thanks for sharing. I'll test out the Liquid Glass resin. 72hrs is a VERY long cure time but skipping the extra steps may still boost productivity. Do you do a lot of castings or is it just the nature of a project you are working on?

These are great. I went to your Etsy store but it seems to be out? You know you can get some really cool colors with resin dyes, transparent reds, yellows and greens, also can mix in phosphoric powders, or colored nylon hairs for textures. Maybe do some resin dart frogs or various bugs, iridescent scorpions on the stem. Anyway I've enjoyed your videos keep up the good work.

Hello! I actually sold out of them and there is only 1 Glo left that doesn't have the official packaging. The mushrooms are also slightly yellowed but usually clear up if you set them in the direct sun for a day or two. If you want the last one in existence, let me know. It would be $120 with free shipping. Paypal would be best if you use that. I could also list it on my 3D Handyman Etsy page. The Crucible Company Etsy is down at the moment. I will never make these again due to the absurd level of difficulty associated with making the mushrooms. I may one day to a post-mortem on them where I explain all the complications. Biggest issue was that I did not have a climate controlled shop to make them. I liked the idea of coloring them and I tested it out a few times. The trouble was that the dye made the mushrooms to delicate and they would break while removing them from the molds. This was will relatively low amounts of color as well. I could not even get close to a nice solid color. If I were to make a giant one, this probably wouldn't be an issue. Might be a fun one-off project one day! I just don't want to make 100s of them again, haha.

They are beautiful, but the time spent making each mushroom makes them inhibitively expensive. Perhaps their may be a quicker way to make them such as casting ? I think combined with your bowl and moss it is a eye catching piece - especially when used as a mood lighting source.
@The3DHandyman
@The3DHandyman 11 месяцев назад
The plan was to sell a few and put out an eye catching piece to kick off a new company. The mushrooms would need to be way more simple if they were going to be mass produced. The trend is to make things that look ok and costs nothing. High quality art is a tough sell unless there are prefect marketing conditions. The starving artist is a real thing. That's why I make air filters now 😅
@1414141x
@1414141x 11 месяцев назад
@@The3DHandyman Yes, I agree. The only thing Art and crafts (serious craftsmen) have over mass production is perhaps very individual 'one off' pieces. I you started to sell these in any quantity it would not be long before a company in China would be producing cheap 'look alike' copies at a fraction of the cost. With manufacturing technology it is relatively quick and easy to replicate things.
