Unreal Tournament is the original King of the Hill in the frag-or-be-fragged multiplayer gaming world. As the undisputed 1999 Game of the Year, Unreal Tournament grabbed the first person shooter genre by the soiled seat of its pants and knocked it around the room with its never-before-seen graphics, brutal edge-of-your-seat gameplay and a massive and varied feature list that gave gamers more than they ever expected.

+Ghost81 It's often a budget thing. If you're not AAA, implementing a decent AI and proper pathfinding is a huge investment in terms of development ressources. That being said, AAA games really have no excuse to implement offline botmatches.

@@JAnx01 hey one thing is the music in chaos is also inspired by unreal gold. Our composer listened to all the tracks and is applying a more modern feel to them. As a result a few of the ones in our game might show resemblance. Not to mention the game itself is also heavily inspired by unreal gold/return to na pali. It is not a remake of it by any means but you may notice some similarities?

SADLY i doesnt work on my pc...My new pc just runs it at 874545 fps and the "old" (and the new) on just have a gigantic mouse lag + acelleration that make you fell dazzed . Just impossible to play without puke :( I had to be happy with what i have, so i downloaded the new UT (pre Alpha) on epic games downloader and eventually i play it against bots. Its cool i gave to say but Ut 99 is the best. IF they patch the UT 99 and add better textures and wide screen suport (or force it to run in 4/3 wich i think its impossible) i would buy it.

You could also shoot at the enemy 1,500 meters away with sniper rifles and the infinite voxel maps.

KARTIKEYA007 It was a blast. Ask anybody who played the games when Novalogic had the servers up. People had their own servers. It was awesome. Difference between those games and Unreal type of games is Delta Force was open-world FPS and Unreal is corridor shooter. Graphics are bad by today's standards, but there is some things even today's games don't do right like hiding in the grass far away being a sniper and not being seen. Novalogic started to go downhill with later games and went out of business. Some of the sutom maps were so crazy, and fun. You had sniper towers, bridges, bunkers, buildings, barbed wired, concrete obstuctions, etc. Some custom maps had tower on top of tower on top of tower stacked on each other. Or walk way bridges that zig-zagged above.

18 years later and still getting reviewed on RU-vid haha. Hell I and many others I know still play this and the original Unreal (still modding and mapping for it too). Really glad to see you review this, been growing up with this game since it's release, and as you pretty much hit every nail on the head, I do wish you mentioned it's insanely easy mod-ability. Epic shipped the game with practically all the tools needed to make your own mods and maps right from the get-go, something that heavily expanded the community and content on this game, and kept it alive for years and years after release, even now. I'd argue that it's one of if not THE most modded game in history, with nearly an infinite amount of custom content to download. Again great review, was really happy to see this, especially with the new Unreal Tournament 4 in pre-alpha development which is already looking and playing fantastic!

everytime you would say something about how this game is fps at its absolute finest or something like that, it would just bring me tears of nostalgia, i have easily spent over 10k hours in the unreal series, from unreal gold up to the new one in its alpha, no other fps game or even game in general has ever come CLOSE to the perfection that is unreal, and it really makes my stomach hurt when there are kids growing up without playing a masterpiece like the unreal series.
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 8 лет назад
I honestly prefer the graphics of the first UT over the later games in the series. They are not only very pretty, even today, but most importantly they are relatively clean, crisp and simple. From UT2003 onward, the graphics for most levels are overloading you with information. This, in combination with the horrible idea of giving everyone similar armors, makes it quite hard to identify players (and their affiliation in team games).
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 8 лет назад
UT2003 started the trend by giving (almost) everyone beefier armors, chipping away at their individuality and making them look too... blocky. UT3 was where things got really bad though, especially for men. At near point-blank is not a problem, but at a distance it becomes troublesome, especially if they blend in with the environment of the maps, as it often happens. Personally, I just find the maps in the follow-up games to be too tiring on the eyes. It's not just a matter of clutter. Even relatively simple and clean maps often have too many and/or complicated textures and lightning. Add to that the lightning effects of the weapons and you've got your eyes under an almost constant assault of vivid colors. Not even the most colorful maps in UT were as tiring and annoying to me as the newer games are. Heck, even Unreal 2 is less annoying! (even though that's a single player game). Again, that's just my personal experience. If you've managed to have good fun with 2003, 2004 and 3, then more power to you!
@BusaLova
@BusaLova 4 года назад
@@JustGrowingUp84 I had that problem with UT3 from 2009. Too much to see, and the amount of bloom from lighting sources was overwhelming. Thank God you could change that around in the settings. Once that was to my liking, I found UT3 very, very enjoyable.

@xDinomanx
@xDinomanx 4 года назад
@@JustGrowingUp84 Still enjoy the sequels somewhat, I think UT3 was a step back in the right direction as it got rid of a lot of stuff that didn't really belong in the franchise (e.g. UT2003/04 had characters based off of undead/zombies and many of the weapons felt downgraded, plus they got rid of the lightning gun to bring back the sniper rifle). However some of my critiques with the game were these: -UT3 tried to focus on a campaign/story mode that felt very tacked on. It wasn't based around a tournament and instead was about a group of guys hunting down some Necris Queen because she killed some innocent people. They should've just stuck with a Tournament instead and not focused on trying to create a story which was just very disconnected (had characters no one cares about). -The aesthetic of the game was way too much on the dark gothic side I felt. It was very hit or miss and many of the character models lacked their individuality that the first game did better at. Although some maps you play on look great with the Necris look, I didn't like how some maps are given an alternate version for the Necris (e.g. Facing Worlds). The original UT did have dark and gritty maps but it didn't oversaturate and had much more variety as well as far more environments that were "Unreal". -Whilst it's great that it introduces lots of new characters it unfortunately left a lot of the classic characters behind. With the exception of Lauren and Malcolm, other characters like Brock, Juggernaut, Xan Kriegor, Clanlord etc do not exist in this game. The same goes for a lack of other races too like the Skaarj who got replaced by the Kraal for some reason. Not only that but the customisation options have been severely downgraded too. That said there are things I like/appreciate about UT3: -The weapons feel like a much needed return to form with many of the guns feeling more like their classic UT99 counterparts. -Reintroduces many old classic maps that have been remade with the UT3 aesthetic and still hold up nicely as a result. -Soundtrack is on the whole very good. With the classic maps that return the composers bring great remixes with them. -New gametypes were fun. I especially enjoyed many of the maps that involve the use of vehicles which actually play really well and fit the UT style. Furthermore being able to use a hoverboard to get around on those maps was pretty nice too.

As always a great review. As UT came out i was 16 and it was my number one multiplayer game the next 9 years. I played an liked the Unreal1-Botmatch the year before, so i ran into the shop to get my copy of UT1 as soon it came out. MAy i be allowed to say, how amazing also the box for UT were. Something we'll never see today. The box, the polished content and the gameplay is a testament how perfect UT is and how gaming was back in the day. Pure fun without DLC, activiations, launchers and other annoying shit. The music gave me chills and when i see you play maps i played 15 years ago, but still can load their layout into my mind and remember some battle scenes i expirienced on them, it still shows me how important the game was for me :) Some maps had an amazing layout and were really fun to play. Conveyor is one of my loved ones where i can remember the name. From time to time i boot it up and play one or two rounds to get an nostalgia kick. As a former Assault clan and league player i always loved the AS mode the most. It has a deepth (with rocket launches, hammerjumps, shortcuts, etc) no other game offered back then and it is still fun today. Atm a new UT (UT4) is in development and everyone can test it for free. The development team is in contact with the community (some of them are even former players who loves UT1 also) and they heavily trying to get the UT1 game feeling back. DM and CTF are playable by default and AS is in development by the UT1-AS community i used to hang around.

What a thrill to see original Deck and Facing worlds again! I loaded up original UT sometime last year and the game is STILL super playable and fun! The graphics are way outdated, but the maps are so good, and they STILL have not given us 3-node domination since this game. (Warfare is a huge refinement of the concept, but I kinda liked the perpetual chaos of having to defend THREE spots on a large map at once. Frustrating, but fun!) One thing though, You left out the amazing Ripper in the list of weapons. The only weapon I know of in video games that has a ricocheting projectile and does a one shot _decapitation_ kill. Amazing.

I've just reinstalled UT99 last week, bumped the difficulty to Masterful (last time I finished on Adept) and I'm having a blast again. Too bad all the Unreal games have been taken off Steam and GOG by Epic. More like Epic Fail. About game companies getting more greedy and the amount of game maps being much, much lower than 2 dacades ago - this has all to do with the expected fidelity of an AAA title nowadays. The cost of producing assets is astronomical and keeps getting larger each year. The costs are so ridiculous that all aspects of the games are suffering, and companies are searching for business models that would allow them to cover this cost. In Unreal Tournament '99 one person could probably make a decent, shippable map in a week or two, with UT4 making and polishing all the assets to fill a map would take months of hard work for a dozen people. If not a year. Same goes for weapon and character models. Surely there's abominable business practices like pulling kids into gambling with lootboxes, but not all of that is done because game studios are lazy or greedy. New game engines and technology doesn't automatically make games prettier - hard working artists do. Regardless - indie games are where it's at nowadays, because they are not chasing the cutting edge of visuals.

Unreal Tournament (1999) for FPS, Starcraft (1998) for RTS, Melee (2001) for platform fighting, I can't think of games as old as these that still have such a large and active competitive community, really speaks volumes of their quality and the longevity of games being produced during that era.

What made UT so unique, tons of maps big small you name it, weapons, game modes, A.I in way the bots had a sense of team work and mods baked right into the game no need to download. What you get today, a $60 crappy fps with around 12 God awful maps, horrible weapon balance, lame ass level up system, a hell of space requirement and crappy ass DLC not worth $5. In deed the game system has change but not for the better.

This is a review of UT99, not a comparison between it and UT2004. Should he have also talked about the difference between each game's weapons, their maps, sound design, etc? And UT2004's movement being a major step backwards is just an opinion. A lot of people prefer UT2004's movement over UT99, and vice versa.

Can Of Noodles why would they prefer UT 2004's movement? it's slow and sluggish, making palyers far more vulnerable.
@CanOfNoodles
@CanOfNoodles 8 лет назад
Sam Fisher What? The movement speed is pretty close to UT99's. You also get the double jump. If anything, by using the double jump after a dodge, you can move much FASTER in UT2004 than in UT99. The thing about UT2004 is that there tend to be bigger maps, so the game doesn't feel as tight and in-your-face.
