Bastion is basically a pro tcg player who lives in a world where strategy and optimal builds are considered gimmicks.

Shame they never really did anything with him. He is one if the best characters. Great vid keep up the great vids

The video games Tag Force actually does give closure to Bastion as a character. One of them is where Bastion and Tag Force protagonist(Red Hat) help out others while not the joke that Bastion isnt noticed or forgotten. Although things slowly change. Bastion soon realizes he can do the right thing even if he is never noticed. Basically Bastion (and Tag Force protagonist) come to terms where even people forget them. They will still do their best help and help out others even if in the shadows. A great way to end Bastion's character.

It makes me so sad what they did to Bastion. I had a couple of the video games as a kid where he was a pretty prominent character and when I watched the anime later, I assumed he would be one of Jaden’s main rivals. I’m just so mad that they completely forgot about his character - even if they didn’t want to use him, there were chances write him off in a decent way. I’ve always imagined they could have had him get some sort of job offer elsewhere after the Society of Light Arc, and he decides that he’s stagnated as a duelist and needs a new experience, so he leaves. The writers even could have thrown in some final duel with Jaden, in line with the rest of GX. There was no reason to make him the butt of a joke and then just abandon his character!!

The Yugioh characters that supposedly have only 1 deck always seem to pull new cards from thin air all the time. However when we finally have a character that reasonably should have a new strategy every duel, he gets to use 2 of them. Like come on, he should have at least used all 6 of those decks by the end of the series.

I feel like Bastion was mainly intended for the whole slice-of-life style that early gx had. It made sense, too. Bastion could constantly research all of his opponents because they were his fellow classmates, and he could use unique strategies to take each of them on. As GX began to move away from that style, Bastion as a character became less feasible. You can't really research the decks of opponents you've never seen before. To be honest, this plagues all of GX. Everyone loves Chazz, but he ended up being brainwashed, zombified, or "sent to the stars" for a lot of the series. I love GX, but there's stuff like this that really makes me wish it could be rewritten or something.

Misawa seemed like he was going to be more important at the start of the series; potentially pushing Judai for the 1st place spot in their class. It’s a shame we never really saw too much of him in the later parts of the series; but he did have good moments (like beating Monjome). I even thought his complex of not feeling good enough in the Society of Light arc and feeling like he should’ve been sought out by the society. He is probably one of the few people with enough skill and intelligence to be dangerous to an expanding cult like group. But Saio uses Misawas insecurities to not get sent off the island and to get another person that can help best more people. Seeing other decks he had could’ve been cool too. Also, he got slapped in the original for commenting on her age in relation to becoming an idol. You have to look at the original script for the actual intended causes 😅

I hate on what they did to Bastion/Misawa. He is one of the duelist who uses statistics and probability in his duel, which is kinda rare in yugioh.

5:23 fun fact about that card during the earlier days of duel links when neos was running rampant, I legit ran that card as a counter to that deck just because I saw how bastion used it in the anime.

If there's a silver lining, it's that Bastion's disappearance gave him a special place in the yugioh universe.

Bastion is full of missed potential.... he had 6 decks but we only saw 2. He was played up as the opposite to Jaden (even having a Tiger Vs Dragon theming to them, which get's connected to Yin and Yang) and he is the only character in the dub besides Jaden to retain his Japanese surname. And they just dropped him part way through the show.

It was always weird to me that Bastion's insecurity was his supposed downfall. This is the same dude that got called number 2 by Jaden despite being the number 1 applicant, and not only was he not offended, but he actually acknowledged Jaden as being better after seeing him duel only once (at least, in the sub that's what happened). Idk, I think he had a lot of potential and the writers either got lazy or weren't interested in capitalizing on it. Also, seconded that he should've been a teacher, would've been a perfect conclusion for him

Bastion was one of my favorites in GX, right after Zane and before Jessie. Sadly, I felt like he was a wasted character from the Shadow Riders arc onward. I wanted nothing more than to watch him pop off with his chemistry and physics based decks. It's unfortunate that GX centered too heavily around Jaden and sidelined everyone else to cheerleader status.

One thing i thougth after watching this video is that Bastion was really underused, like he wasnt a jerk genius as media has giving us and in all honesty the guy is respectful, doesnt brag about his science or knowledge and in the epidode that Jaden and Bastion played baseball together they actually became instantly friends and gained both Syrus and Jaden trust and had some Crazy potential with a chemistry deck

Maybe the "ATK Points Quantum Mechanics" he was talking about were the Super Quantum cards, and he was just confused about what an Xyz monster was

One of the ways I would have devolved/showcased his character more would have been to have a tournament for the freshmen class to see who would represent them in the big school duel. Each dorm sending maybe three or four of their best and showing him looking up his opponents before hand and selecting different decks so that we could shown how good he was beyond being told his ranking as well as that one duel against Chazz. Then, in season 2, Bastion gets his hands on the Fossil cards which becomes his new main deck. I think it would have fit him well without needing to create a whole new character for them and it would fit well as he teamed up with Jaden. Heck, just imagine them both feeling at the lowest at the same time with everything at Duel Academy, and them both getting new decks: one showing the brightness of imagination and a future while the other is unearth the past to learn from it. Maybe he could have had a tag team with Jaden when they went to Domino City.

Honestly despite my heavy bias towards Jaden, Bastion should have gotten way more screen time. He was a great duelist and he proved that when he defeated Chazz which very impressive since not many characters can beat a Yu-gi-oh Rival. But still, putting that aside I still think GX has the best surporting cast out of any Yu-gi-oh show.

Hmmm I'd love a video like this about Jack Atlad. As much as I love Jack (He is my fav. Yugioh character) Aside from his duel againdt Yusei and the duel against The guy using Thor he always had the "Stop using full power or you'll lose" stories. Which were nice for his character developement but I would have still loved to not only see him duel more often but also to show how full brute power he can go. It's literaly his biggest strength.

Same. Such great potential for this character that seemed to have been mostly forgotten about after his little arc with Tania in season 1. I can never forget when I was playing the 1st tag force game that Bastion was a tier 1 character (which was pretty much the main characters) only to go into the 2nd tag force game and he became a tier 2 character like even they knew how far he fallen.

Bastion could've been a very good alt hero character. He's the complete opposite to Jaden except for one nuance, their both good guys. Not just good vs evil, good, I mean they're good people. Where Jaden has luck, spirits, main character powers, plot armor, an ever expanding deck that would be illegal if they had a 60 card limit back in those days, and being dull witted in anything not card game related, Bastion has none of those. He's smart, he has a variety decks with different playstyles, he has no deus ex machina powers, but he's still a really good duelist that is ahead of his peers, just like Jaden. IMO, what really hurt Bastion was them adding too many side characters to properly balance, and focusing too hard on each character having a quirk. And to add insult to injury, they made Bastion's quirk, his academic intelligence, less important, and gave him a new one to focus on: unimportance. Instead of trying to balance the importance of the growing cast, they decided to make Bastion a joke, and throw him to mediocrity. Despite what writers think, smart characters don't need to be phased out for other characters. Being smart doesn't mean you're limited to what you know when you're introduced as a character. You can learn more, absorb knowledge faster, and you're smart enough to be creative with how you use that knowledge, something the writers obviously aren't.

I want Bastion to be seen as a very smart and resourceful character. Like he'd be the person you go to for help with your homework, so helping his classmates build decks could be his thing. He can also be given very special cards and set up either a deck with hidden mechanics or set up a deck to fail as a trap. Maybe a situation where he forgot all his decks and can't get them in time, so having to do quick math to make a rental deck out of junk cards and make a strategy that executes perfectly. Would love to see him make fun decks that -by some fucking miracle- scientifically works.

Others have commented on it, but I would love a analysis of the Yugioh tag force games and how they help characterize many of the characters (Bastion and Blair to name a few).

Bastion was the Shikamaru of Yugioh GX caused he was an underrated genius to craft six 6 decks of each attribute !

What i really like about Bastion is how dynamic his deck is in the series. he always is trying out new decks, evolving strategies, etc. heck my favorite episode was when he dueled Jaden and used prohibition declaring the polymorph fusion card. y'know the card essential for jaden's hero deck. I do wish they could've focused on the school more because I would die laughing if Bastion played an exodia solitaire deck listing all of the benefits of a turn 1 deck and by the end of the episode he throws it out, returning to his studies of all the other deck theories. Turns out using a strategy that has zero interaction with your opponent and requires you pulling your entire deck is boring.

I think it's sad that Chumley literally never won a single on screen duel. I mean, at least he had a great character arc, so he's arguably better off than Bastion, but still, would it have killed them to give him ONE actual victory?

Such a shame what they did with him. They should have had him at least beat Tania or something so he can have a win. That whole arc was dumb with almost everyone losing and Jaden soleing almost all the shadow riders on his own. I'd love to see you do more of these videos in the future

I always liked Bastion the most (well him and Jim are tied for me) out of all the characters and my biggest gripe with GX was how he fell from a very protégé type to a butt of the joke character it seemed off since in season 1 he was hyped up to be this up and coming duelist then nothing happens personally I would have had him leave with the professor still in a rut and the professor seeing his potential not wanting him to be in a rut and dueling him teaching him that he shouldn’t care about the approval of others then have him come back as a more developed character with a rematch against Chazz to make up for the loss during season 2 and show everyone just how much he had improved have him lose but make it so that everyone acknowledges Bastion has overcome his problems and is a new better Bastion and also used the fire deck to show off the fire dragon in the intro but also to symbolize his passion for learning or something idk it’s rough ik my bad

A little late to the party, but I actually enjoyed Bastion a lot and he was my favorite character on my initial watch through. (well, him and Zane, but I digress.) I actually think that they could have had him leave Duel Academy, or at least announce that he was transferring, at the end of season 2 and have him come back as one of the representatives of the other schools. Let's be honest, GX got a bit of a bloated cast and you could easily eliminate some of the reps and not lose too much. It would also allow you to establish his dueling skills in a way similar to Manjoume. The only reason he's not top of his class at Duel Academy is because of Manjoume and Jaden. At another academy, he'd be at the top. It would also give you a reason to use his various decks, part of the reason he's at the top is because you CAN'T prep to duel him. You don't know what deck he's bringing. And that could reflect in his on screen duels. You could even have him become a sort of protege to Professor Viper, who admires his efficiency and drive for research. In fact, having three of the side characters announce that they're transferring to other academies/campuses and having a time skip where all of them come back stronger would be absolutely amazing and could have elevated the cast. You could even keep Jesse! I've got a whole rewrite of GX that I've been sitting on for a bit, with a few differences and with the benefit of seeing the whole story. It could be interesting!

On the bright side, at least Bastion avoided embarrassing himself in Season 3. Because MAN was that not a good look for most of Jaden's friends.

Only thing I can disagree with you here is Jaden is "lucky". Bastion is the perfect counter balance to Jaden because bastion works mathematically while Jaden relies of faith. That's the real difference. Remember in the dub Zane said "it will be instincts vs intelligence " for their duel off. And Jaden did have a point in that duel. Bastion does his moves at home (ie prepared) but Jaden does his on the field (meaning he's better on the fly). Their a great counter balance and it IS a massive shame the sidelined bastion. I've always seen Jaden and bastion as faith vs preparation. Jaden knows his deck in a spiritual sense while bastion knows his deck on a more scientific sense. Now does Jaden have some "luck"? Yes. But he has "the heart of then cards" because he believes in the spirit of his cards. If bastion had that along with his scientific formulations, he'd just about be unstoppable.

I think that I agree with your stance on where his story should have been in Season 2 and going further, in Season 3 I think that him, Hassleburry, and Jim Cook would have been a good trio and have him suspect something with the wristbands and tell Jaiden, The Chazz, and the others to take them off for friendly duels while in Season 4 work on becoming a teacher in Attack Point Quantum Mechanics.

One of my favorite side characters who actually turned out to help my boy Judai in major ways. He pushed him to develop as a duelist but also to learn to use his Supreme King powers and balance. Loved the flashback Judai had during his duel against Yubel. Such a great moment.

What I love is that in Season3, they sorta negated the issue Yu-gi-oh characters usually have of losing importance when they don't duel or help with a duel. Infact, they did it too well and they had to exclude him from 80% of the dark world-arc or else he would have dismantled it early with facts and logic.

I loved him too, he was the most friendly easygoing person in both the GX academy game i adore and he is a strong doelist. "those who are not over taken by pride in talent are the real deal good people"

The more I grow disillusioned with Gallop-era YGO anime, the more I find Bastion's treatment in the show VERY aggravating. He's the one guy who prioritizes the intellectual side of the game with how he plays and how he builds his decks (by anime standards) and yet is treated as a joke by the show itself especially when its protagonist is a sacking mofo who has plot armor on his side. It's like a subtle middle finger saying intelligence doesn't matter and that those who are born lucky are the ones who come out on top.

I relly wish that we could have gotten a duel betwen Bastion and Eisenstein in the fourth season, its first half was all about the charekters finding there calling and giving Them send offs and so on, so if the writters had made him return to duel academy like everyone else, they could have made an episode that would be like our godbye to him, in it he could duel Eisenstein to prove how Seriously he took sientific dueling, we could even have a chumly moment were he lost, but still past because of how he duelt, (thoug i would personaly want him to win, since he relly nedet one at that point, plus that could show how bastion had the capability to surpas him) and after that Eisenstein would take him under his wing as his prodegy and give Bastion a prober send off. Honestly if the writters had done this, they would have shown that even thoug they lost focus on Bastion thoug the series, they Never forgot about him. Another thing i thougt about, was making him apper in arc v, he could have been the strategist in Asters milletary Camp during the xyz arc, that would have made op fore how they treated him in gx, but of course he got thougn to the side fore other charekters in that series to.

I personally love how they turned him into a joke only for him to be instrumental in bringing Jaden back to his senses in season 3. He’s great comedically, but also a fairly realistic character.

Unrecognized Genius: Bruno/Antinomy from 5D's

Underrated and underdeveloped to say the least. Bastion should have been given a bit more glory. For example, I would've had him beat Camula: no magic medallion involved, just logic and strategy. Bastion could have beaten one of the most dangerous Shadow Riders, but no, let Camula be just one of the five Riders beaten by Jaden... I also think the introduction of too many new characters in season 3 ended up damaging the OG (Chazz, Alexis, Hassleberry and Bastion, to name a few). Good for him that he got to stay with Tanya, though. 👀

Have to be honest, this is just a realistic depiction of the archetype Bastion falls under. The nerd may be smart, but to achieve that level of studiousness requires sacrificing a lot of social interaction. You don't get to be the guy acing every exam and scientifically breaking things down to the point of writing duel equations on your ceiling by having a rich social life like Jaden. Sure, when it counts, you'll come out the gates swinging, but he never got his spotlight because he intentionally hides himself away from it to the point his relationships don't develop. Eventually, he gets left behind because he keeps himself way too preoccupied rather than balancing that time. There are even times where when he would hang out with the other students outside of assignments, it was just him giving them more assignments. Jaden and Syrus get roped into cleaning the walls of his room, and then they get roped into "dueling exercises" rather than dueling. Realistically, which person are you going to spend more time with: the adventurous and lucky delinquent Jaden or the guy that's just studying all day? This somewhat falls apart when it's revealed Bastion's become nearly as ripped as Tania, but I'm going to assume she got him to hit the gym with her for some non-dueling exercises. Lol.

God damn I'm slow in playing the GX Tag Force 3 lol (I'm a sucker for the 5D's Tag Force ones mostly, but I will take notes). If anything, the games sometimes, give these secondary characters something notable (mostly, but at least they try. Even Duel Links). In any case, Bastion to me's a weird case because, I love Eric Stuart's portrayal and charm of the character in the dub and his knowledge on the sciences and how his decks reflect them mostly, is surprizingly compelling. However, I do think he was shafted in favour of Judai/Jaden taking the helm in most main duels and bringing too many side characters for single episodes (That's a fault on GX really. Side or other main characters rarely if ever, get compelling endings to their arcs and few like Chumley, have short but still lasting arcs in a good way). I mean, I do find the pairing between him and Tania interesting but hey, I too wish he had a noticeable role, before not appearing again for the 4th season in the anime. Maybe one last duel with Jaden or Eisenstein to show how far he's come. Hell, Alexis/Asuka deserved better as back as the first season when she was robbed of the opportunity to duel Nightshroud. Anyway, I'll briefly state that Yu-Gi-Oh as a whole, has tons of potential sometimes that the games sometimes served to fill that gap in some way. Regardless, neat video. Earned a new sub.

Bastion in my opinion was done dirty especially in the shadow rider's arc. (In fact everyone got done dirty during that arc.) Bastion should have defeated Tanya Reminding us why he was the strongest in the Ra yellow dorm, and the smartest dualist in the academy.

Chum lee is underrated

Shou/Fubuki/Rei/Jim are all under-used and should have been dueling more often especially Shou since his growth in season 4 seems so forced and didn't get an on-screen duel after that. Jim should at least get 1-2 more duels/episode dedicated on him and I would be fine with that.

Off-topic and not anime, but Star Wars Resistance is a prime example of EVERYONE being more interesting than the assigned main character...smarter too. You know you have a bad MC when he becomes more of a distraction from the characters we actually want to see, not to mention overplays the "fool" to the point it stops being funny and within the context of the story, he starts putting people in danger because of his stupidity. IMO it's a show made halfway decent (some of the time) purely because of its side characters...if you edited Kaz out, you wouldn't lose anything really.

Bastion is one of my favorite characters from Gx, it was sad and annoying how they just forgot about him and even disrespected him with jokes about that into the show itself :( He was Jaden's friendly rival, not the kind of Chazz or Zane, but someone who he was friend with. I think the writers just didn't know what to do with him after season 1. And I prefer him way over Hassleberry
