As news came out that a Congressional committee recently simulated war with China, I sat down with Jake Werner, the chief China expert at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, to examine his argument that the Chinese Communist Party poses no threat to Americans.

Really cool interview. My perspective on China is definitely different.

So where did the recent tensions over Taiwan begin? Is it created by the u.s.? China seems more reactionary to our meddling in Taiwan. We can look at china’s foreign policy and see that they are not imperialistic. They are certainly expanding their power and influence, but importantly, they’re doing so by being good business partners. They don’t impose political, ideological, or financial behavior change upon the countries of which they deal. They don’t impose their will on countries through covert or overt means, as the u.s. infamously does. I don’t see a rising china to be a threat to the u.s., but for one aspect, and that’s the dollar. Our hold on the dollar reserve currency is weakening and the growing scale of the disaster is entirely our gov’s fault. Mass money printing and exporting our manufacturing base has increased our reliance on the dollar as the reserve, and sanctions have shown the world that diversifying foreign reserves is a necessity.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. Taiwan is being used by the US to destabilize and demonize China. Democracy, TSMC are convenient excuses used to make claims of national security reasons to defend and arm Taiwan.

China has all sorts of systemic input issues, especially energy and food. That is the basis of thawing relations with Russia. I think that is what has put US on alert. The fact that it can be a value-add economy without Western inputs, only consumption. It's an easy formula; Russia = cheap energy (and fertilizer) and China = massive labor pool (Interestingly Chinese labor is no longer the cheapest). The Sino-Russian split was a boom for US economic imperialism. Now the US has to come up with an alternative that requires an actual relationship. They seem to be doing the opposite.

Great discussion! The Chinese uyghers issue stems from the terrorism that was being committed by some in the community. It was a legitimate problem, and as usual, one that the u.s. invested in and uses as an excuse to demonize china. Mandatory job training is not the worst thing happening in the world, although I don’t mean to minimize it. Consider if we had such a terrorism issue in America. What would we do to address it? Look at what we did to ‘fight terrorism’ across the globe, a global war and a massive power grab at home.

And don't forget that America had counterterrorism ops in Xinjiang as Uyghurs had ties to Bin-Ladenites and radical Sunnis. Consider the possibility that the CCP learned a thing or two from the GWoT by Uncle Sam.

This is totally off topic, but Thaddeus: have you thought of having James Pogue on your show?
