For the United States, tensions are rising with both allies and adversaries. Rogue states are racing to master new technologies and create weapons of mass destruction. And faith in international institutions is seemingly deteriorating. What does this all mean for U.S. national security?
Staged in our "unresolved" format, five esteemed foreign policy thought leaders will argue for or against a number of motions revolving around some of America’s most pressing national security issues, including: Is it time to take a hard line on Iran? Is NATO no longer fit for purpose? And is the Russia threat overblown?
PANELISTS
Derek Chollet, Executive Vice President, The German Marshall Fund of the United States & Fmr. U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense
Stephen F. Cohen, Professor of Russian Studies and History Emeritus, New York University
Reuel Marc Gerecht, Senior Fellow, The Foundation for Defense of Democracies & Fmr. CIA Analyst
John J. Mearsheimer, American Political Scientist & Professor, The University of Chicago
Kori Schake, Deputy Director-General, International Institute for Strategic Studies

Stephen Cohen had the best argument on the Nato question in my opinion, but just my subjective point of view as a Finn. I was born in the 80's, and my personal expierience is that the relations between us and the Russians are not as bad as you might think, considering we had very bloody war with them not so long ago. To me it feels like joining Nato would just worsen the relations between us, and some factions have been begging us for to join. We can take care of our own relations. I don't want to fight your war because of an alliance.

AcidKun, great point. Find Montenegro on the map. Then think: if Finland were to join NATO, Fins would potentially have to die for people in Montenegro.

If ain't broke don't fix it. If you have a stable situation that works for you you shouldn't upset the balance.

Well, it’s 2023 and your views went out the window into the dumpster. Finland is now vying for NATO membership now that Russia under dictator Putin has militarily attacked Ukraine.

I often watch such political and geostrategical panels, and I dont remember when such debates actually had a women that was not stupid, arrogant and simply annoying like here Kori Schake. It even made me mysogynist.

They want us there and that’s a good thing.... what? We pay for their defense and what are we supposed to thank them for the privilege of having done so. If they are so damn afraid then maybe they should do something about it

According to multiple polls they don't want us there either. Their leaders might, to save money. But even that is changing with the planned EU army.

I don't think the New York subways are as bad as Meirsheimer makes them out to be. But then again I haven't used them nearly as much he has. Cohen seems to like them though and he probably has the most experience on this issue.

i generally like this debate process, sad to see the age demographic in the audience but i know its only because many but not all of the youth care little on world affairs.
