Known for his light and lively showmanship as the director of the Columbus Zoo, Jack Hanna talks about the dark side of a 1972 accident at his family's property in Knoxville. A boy, Matthew Ramsbottom, had his left arm bitten off by Daisy, Hanna's favorite lion. Hanna told the story to Columbus Dispatch writer Mike Wagner while on a lunch break at the 2018 Memorial Tournament.

Maybe “it’s your fault” was a harsh way of expressing what happened. The father was trying to explain that, ultimately, it was Jack’s responsibility to prevent such accidents from occurring.

I was lucky enough to meet him. Years ago, he used to put on a small wildlife show at Busch Gardens in Tampa. We got tickets, attended, and got to meet him at the little "meet & greet" after the show. He took the time to talk to his fans as long as they wanted. He was just as warm, patient, and witty as how you see him on TV shows. With this one, Alzheimer's has stolen a truly wonderful man.

There's no point trying to place blame on Jack or anyone else because it was obviously an accident that no one wanted to happen but it's rediculous and unkind to say it's the parents' fault. It's definitely not the parents' fault. But I'm sure Jack, the boy, the parents, members of staff, all spent their lives fighting off feelings of guilt and blaming themselves. There are other ways to be supportive of Jack without saying such a hurtful thing.
@Belle-ms4ud
@Belle-ms4ud Год назад
@@sdtn2220It’s definitely the parents’ fault, for not watching their child enough to keep him from getting through two barriers. Your child’s safety is your responsibility, especially when you take them around dangerous animals. I take my son to the Zoo every week and hold his hand, or have him strapped in his stroller, if he won’t listen to me and stand by my side. (He is a toddler)
@sdtn2220
@sdtn2220 Год назад
@@Belle-ms4ud It is not. If you are housing dangerous animals and inviting guests on your property to see them, you have the responsibility of having adequate barriers. The 3 year-old slipped past one fence and then stuck his fingers through a chainlink fence. That is not an adequate barrier. I'm sure the parents assumed there were more effective barriers in place. That's a reasonable assumption as Jack himself thought the barriers couldn't be penetrated by children. I'm guessing the parents have spent their lives wishing they had been holding their 3 year-old's hand that day. I'm sure, Jack has speant his life wishing he had had a better barrier. There are lots of things a lot of people could have done differently to prevent the tragic accident. You can show compassion and mercy to one of them without villifying the other. That's great that you are a superior parent. I have a feeling though that a day will come, probably many days, where you will slip from being super mom and instead be a human mom and your child will get hurt under your watch. Hopefully not with as big as consequences as this family faced, but when that happens I hope you have more grace for yourself than you've shown this family who have been through hell already.

But the loss of his arm did not hold him back in life, according to his younger brother Seth Ramsbottom, who lives in Knoxville. Matthew inspired others his entire life by playing soccer, football and racing mountain bikes with one arm, Seth said. He became a chef and moved to Wyoming to pursue his outdoor passions, including snowboarding. Seth said he never spoke to his older brother about how he lost his arm, and his family never talked about the incident. It wasn’t until about six years ago - after Matthew had died - that Seth’s dad talked to him about that day. And even in that conversation, Seth said, there was no hatred or resentment toward Hanna. “I have never heard anyone in my family say one bad word about Jack Hanna, ever,” Seth said. “My brother’s legacy is being an inspiring, fun-loving guy who other people wanted to be around. Revisiting the Family and expressing your grief for the incident may help you but it certainly will help them. Make amends. Life is hard and holding all this inside makes it even harder. My favorite word God has given is Forgiveness. Forgive yourself.

I feel sorry for Jack as it seems he has tried his hardest to put this behind him and i can only imagine if he could he would've taken that boys place that fateful day. Now he's at an event trying to just have a nice time and this reporter catches him off guard while he's trying to eat his lunch! You can feel Jack's sorrow at having to talk about this! Shame on the reporter for asking about this probably for shares and likes!

The Dispatch did the best video about Alzheimer's and Jack Hanna. Urging folks to look it up. It's the truth of this awful disease. God bless Jack and Suzi.

He feels regret. If he sees the parents, he might just say, " I'm sorry," and not talk try to soften his blame or talked about all he did to prevent accidents. I wouldn't be surprised if the child did ok, if he had good prosthetics and good therapy .

The sound is really bad. Can someone please tell me....a boy's arm was bitten off by one of his lions on his farm?
@prudence18
@prudence18 Год назад
when he's talking about it, Jack uses his hands to make notion, and I can just barely hear him say "his arm was shoved into the fence, which caused it to come off". I myself dont even know what he talking about leading up to that moment?? idk. I had the volume All the way up but guess not soon enuff. ... ha. story of my LIFE 🤦

The arm was through the chain link fence. I don't know if the shock made the child or someone pull him back from the lions grip and his arm was torn off by the fence but it sounds like the lion had his arm in his/her jaw. I think it's a terrible accident.

If you had all he signs posted and barriers in place and the child still got into this situation it WAS NOT your fault. It was the parents' fault for not paying enough attention to what their child was doing. I saw a toddler lose his fingers in an escalator 50 years ago at a mall in Oklahoma City because his mother was checking her items out and not paying attention to her toddler. Parents need to keep an eye on their children better than they usually do.

That boy’s parents apparently weren’t paying close enough attention that allowed the boy to put his arm through that fence. Sounds like Jacks dad was a asshole that’s pretty harsh to put the blame all on Jack. Ya what a horrible memory to carry you entire life…😢😢😢

Personally I think these kind of people don't understand how to handle animals. You might say they're they experts but this is the outcome. Being an animal handler is a dangerous job and these guys make it look easy and safe. The leads to a false sense of safety around animals like tigers. Just because they're somewhat domesticated and familiar with humans doesn't mean they're "safe". A little food on your clothes from lunch might be enough to trigger an instinct in a wild animal. They get too used to being around dangerous animals all the time and become complacent. The public doesn't understand the danger or they wouldn't want to be present.
