In spite of its great location, fair price, and more than seventy showings, Catherine’s spacious family home has been languishing on the market for three whole months. Catherine is stumped…But Sofie isn’t. She says the property looks as though it was last decorated when shoulder pads and leg warmers were in style. The retro 80s décor has got to go, she says.
In order to give the home a sleek and contemporary feel, Sofie comes up with a $3,500 plan. Ready to move on with her life - and in with her new husband - Catherine is committed from the start. And as Anthony and the team expose the hardwood floors, harmonize the interiors, and freshen up the kitchen, Sofie walks Catherine through the basics of real estate 101.

I never understood why some people have problems with decluttering before putting on the market. You will have to pack anyway, so why not go ahead and pack up before putting it on the market? Neutral colors are better than the taste-specific pastels she had before. What bothered me the most is renting furniture. It just isn't a valid option for most people. In my opinion, sofa covers are better, unless you have a HUGE oversized sofa that takes up the whole room.

Even though I thought the black leather didn't go well with her very traditional furniture I thought her house looked fine. I would not have bypassed her house simply because her furnishings were "dated". She clearly kept her home well maintained. It was extremely clean, no clutter or junk to be seen. The yard was lovely. I certainly could ascertain if the layout and structure of her house was right for me and my family without the need to spend additional money renting furniture to show/stage her home. Painting, floors (carpeting removal), structural improvements, yard maintenance, etc. make sense. Furnishings not so much. Anyone who cannot see around a bit of furniture or other house décor is focusing on the wrong stuff.

That carpet looked brand new and just lovely; a helluva lot better than that ORANGE-coloured wood floor that was lying beneath it! I still cannot wrap my head around why the "potential buyers" really give a damn about the furniture and decor if they are truly viewing this house as actual BUYERS and not just people who want to see themselves on television. I completely agree it was a shame to paint that beautiful furniture. In addition to painting the terracotta floors in the kitchen that was horrendous and a big mistake. That paint is going to make things slippery and if any water falls down on that that floor is going to be very slippery and a extreme hazard. She should just put her furniture in storage like you said and rent something but I would not have let them paint my furniture and if they do it without the homeowners permission that's a big lawsuit.

The house looked fine before and very nice afterward, but did anyone else notice how odd the fridge looked? It was much too big for that space. I might have considered removing that strange extra section of cabinets, cutting them in half and putting the fridge centered on that wall so it didn't block the back door... or at least doing something different there. The new color in the kitchen was underwhelming too. It would have been pretty with a lighter shade of the green that she had originally rather than white on white. Also, while any nice chair could have been rented, cramming a bulky love seat in the corner of the living room was an odd choice. I love the show, but couldn't help but notice those few things this time.

The house looks great but they should have spent the leftover $1500 on a portico entry for the front door. I've staged one house and four condos for sale, and always go to CraigsList first. Take pictures of the staging and put them with sale papers: it's tax-deductible. Then if I like some pieces, take them home after the sale I'm surprised not to see a plate of chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen. Buy refrigerated dough, bake 'em up, put 'em out. The smell makes an open house much more inviting and getting chocolate into someone's mouth makes an unfamiliar interior more hospitable.

My fiancé's son bought a house for a lot less than it was worth largely because the decor and flooring were outdated and tatty. While my fiancé fitted new wood flooring downstairs his ex-wife and I painted the whole house top to bottom, all to a high standard because we care about the person who'll be living there. The previous owner visited to discuss an issue with the heating boiler and said he wished he'd done all of this years ago, bemoaning the £10k+ more he could have had if he'd got his priorities right.

The makeover looks great, and it's a lovely house, but every time I watch a 'before' tour and see a tiled backsplash in anything but white, I get this clutch of anxiety! Beautiful terracotta quarry tiles in this kitchen - timelessly classic, practical and good quality, and they would be a really nice accent in a predominantly white/cream and neutral kitchen. Instead, sure enough, they painted over them - that paint will get scratched in a year or two, be unhygenic and scruffy, and cleaning it all off would be a huge undertaking, if it's even possible. Easier to just rip the tiles off and replace them, but the original ones must have been expensive, and it's a horrible waste. It's such a cheap bodge instead of working the design around them. I really wish they wouldn't do this! (Still, at least this time they didn't also paint over the granite worktops, which they did in one episode I saw!).

The only thing that needed to go were the ratty black sofas. The agent dropped the ball by not emphasizing to buyers how well maintained the house was. I go by the house's bones, the maintenance, and the location. Only an idiot would buy a house because of pretty paint done hastily. Once the furniture's out, they can finally see the house naked with all it's faults. In a poorly maintained house, the shortcuts and patches are smiling at you and your empty purse.

@shirleypena4133
@shirleypena4133 6 лет назад
+elizabeth gerrard That was my very thought! Statistics have shown that older folks getting married have a higher divorce rate than do younger folks who marry, and of course you run a higher risk of losing your partner sooner into the marriage (due to death). All the money from the sale of her house will now go into community property, which means that if she divorces Ian he can go after at least half of what the sale of her house generated....unless of course they invested all of it into HIS house (very common). On the other hand, if she dies before him (and judging by the way she looks that's entirely possible) she leaves no property to her daughter, since her property is now soley that of her surviving partner. When he dies, ALL of it becomes that of HIS children; her daughter gets zip! If I were her, I'd make out a will in which-upon my death-my home that I bought previous to my marriage would automatically become the property of my daughter. In the meantime, I'd simply rent it out to generate additional income.

Look at her shoes. She can't even walk in them, and her ankles quiver when she tries to stand without leaning on a wall. My podiatrist friend predicts she probably has severe arthritis in her feet by now. All that "I have to pee" posturing is from those shoes. I guess she had to keep the producers happy with six-inch spikes and creased blouses but at what cost?

Can someone answer the question of why is every picture that is hanging on the walls in any program blurred? Not allowed for some reason ?
@arcane7298
@arcane7298 3 года назад
It has to do with the fact that many artists don't want their artwork commercialized in such a way on such a program. They prefer to have control over where and how their artwork is displayed to the public.The producers would have to get permission from the artists to display the work, which could be complicated, so they just blur them out to avoid any complications or lawsuits later.

I rather like the "dated" look of the living & dining rooms - much prefer carpet to wood flooring in those rooms. The "inspiration" dwelling's master bedroom screams "BANG YOUR HEAD" (daily) with those slanted ceilings (been there years ago - never again) & it is so obvious that the dining room is terribly small.

Honey, they are not professional at all. If you've watched more than two episodes, you know they simply patch with shoddy materials for resale. I'll bet they didn't even sand it first. You can get much better information about how to paint wood correctly from vids, although the professionals prefer to restore antique furniture instead of painting it until it looks like Hobby Lobby fiberboard trash.

coffee fiend do you understand the concept of modernizing and neutralizing to SELL? That house was so outdated, and the peach walls make it more so. White is neutral and bright, not dated and dingy looking. That way buyers don't have to look at painting unless they want to change the color.
@yootoob4516

I read a great tip when staging a house: call several different paint stores and find out the top five selling colors. Use white on all trim and be judicious with the "hot" shades of gray, off-white and stone-beige. I've staged five properties over 14 years and those are the three big colors but the variation changes a little every year.

You haven't seen anything yet. She and Anthony go with cheap fixes. I've seen her ruin period details in turn of the century houses with sloppy paint, and Anthony has no problem putting MDF board over hand-laid bricks in Arts and Crafts bungalows. They would both be thrown out of California and other historic districts. Desperate sellers will agree to anything, and low-budget buyers are ignorant to antique and classic features in a home. I wish they would stay in the clone suburbs and leave the irreplaceable houses alone.

Remember presenter to iron your shirt/clothes before doing the show. The presenter is pretty, but it's so obvious that she sometimes looks down at people and turns her eyes in her head when she thinks they're dumb. This is somewhat expected from her coming from a background of wealth and British aristocracy. She is tactful, but needs to be more careful in her attitude. Sometimes she seems downright snobby. They always use the same general contractor. He shows up on every show. Also either the presenter lady is very tall or everyone else is really short.
@lucygray6162
@lucygray6162 3 года назад
British aristocracy? She doesn't appear to be overly educated. She doesn't know jack about anything before the 90s, and acts as if none of it matters. She wouldn't be on an invitation list by high-end decorators, architects or period house enthusiasts. She simply patches, paints, insults, teeters about on wobbly ankles in silly shoes, and moves on to screw up another house. As for Anthony, I hope he isn't a real contractor who took on the role of "guy slumming for TV as a low-rent patch-and-run artist." He does seem embarrassed at times by the garbage he has to make out of MDF board.

I've removed wall to wall carpeting, many times. People have no idea how nasty wall-to-wall carpeting is. Dirt gets trapped in the padding. Any spills do to. It's a nasty breeding ground for mold and mildew and an assortment of nasty bacteria. Any one who loves wall-to-wall carpeting should remove some, one time, and I bet they'd change their mind. I know I did. I only want cleanable surfaces from now on. I want to be able to sweep, mop, disinfect my floor surface. As to the 'cold' floor, wear house shoes.

The show itself is now dated, and I hope more people have learned to think for themselves when it comes to decor. If you pay full price because of the paint job and styled furniture, you get what you deserve once you finally see the house naked. I was binge-watching this because of the interesting houses, and the desperate sellers. I couldn't help noticing Sophie has zero knowledge of "period details," which she always slops paint on, and Anthony seems forced to use shoddy materials to do random patch jobs. At least he seems a little embarrassed by it. She tilts around on those silly heels like she has to pee, leaning on furniture to steady herself, and criticizes every era before 1990 like it produced nothing of value. Hope she's matured by now.

Yep. Those doors were beautiful, and now she's left with a mismatched set of bedroom furniture she can neither use or sell. I say, remove all of it, but the kind of cheap Ikea headboard and side cupboard Sophoe seems to like. In fact, why can't she move in with her new husband until the house sells? It seems like a house sells better when there are no people living in them to clutter them up and leave personal touches like toothbrushes.
