Emily and Jason have to sell their two-storey, three-bedroom house before they can make an offer on their dream home. But after three months and a hundred showings, they haven’t received a single bite. Sofie loves the home’s period details and proportions…But says in a buyers’ market, the average interiors, gloomy atmosphere, and student vibe just don’t cut it.
In order to stand out from the crowd, Sofie comes up with a $4,100 to transform the home from drab to dynamic. And as Anthony and the team tackle the unsexy master bedroom, refresh the kitchen, and revive some flea market furniture, Sofie gives the couple valuable property insight, and renewed hope that they will finally move on.

If you like MDF and butcher block. They're not exactly using quality materials in any of their houses. I feel sorry for buyers who start noticing all the cheap shortcuts once they've moved into a house. Like OMG, it will take me years to get that tacky paint off the chestnut woodwork. Those two are a nightmare in Craftsman houses.

Having a movable island cart would have been so much better than that ugly "breakfast bar." You could move it closer to the sink & stove when cooking then push it against the opposite wall when not needed. Cabinet space underneath the island cart would provide much needed storage.

I'm going to make a crazy guess that little Miss Sofie has never seen a craftsman style home before.It will take lots of money to restore it back to what it would have looked like when it was built. I just restored a 1922 Craftsman it was a lot of work and money. Why do these people want to undo all that great wood work and part of history ?
@jannibal9273
@jannibal9273 5 лет назад
Most people are "mass" - in other words, they have little to know taste and little to know idea of what a Craftsman (Arts & Crafts) building actually is. Brett Waterman has had some good shows on - one was called "Restored" on HGTV (or maybe it was DIY) and he painstakingly strips off layers of paint to get down to original woodwork and tile. It drives me INSANE when people paint brick!

@@lesliecas2695 Maybe it's different where you are, but I paid the asking price for my first house and sold it 7 years later for almost exactly double that. My second house was listed at $210,000 and I got it at $163,500 by negotiating back and forth, offering $150,000 originally. My present house I bought 5 acres for $55,000 and had a custom house built for $170,000 (all cash). I added about $20,000 since. I'd be real lucky to sell it for $200,000; that's quite a loss, particularly when you add in realtors fees and other costs of selling, not to mention moving costs. As a potential buyer I'd rather have the former owner invest money into the kitchen, garden area or utility systems than into furniture to 'make it look nice' since they're taking those with them anyways. And as a seller I'd expect a potential buyer to be able to look past wall paint and beige sheets since those are things that don't affect the value of the house or the things the buyer can do with it in any way.

Sadly, way too many people lack imagination. I bought a house that was filthy, needed new kitchen and bathroom floors, interior paint, landscaping, window coverings, etc. No one else wanted it, it was so awful. Had a little work done, did a lot myself over about 4 years, and made a lot of money on it. Also bought another house no one wanted because the outside was some weird, beat up blue painted product, the inside was so depressingly drab, dated, and unappealing and the owners left the heat on at about 40 during a cold winter while they were at work and the house was being shown. I got it at a good price when housing costs were very high, spent a few thousand on it in the 12 years I lived there and while I didn’t make much money on it because I sold it during the recession, I wasn’t under water like some I knew, and did ok. There are shows where people buy dumps and fix them up themselves, but this show is needed because there are tons of people out there who don’t have the slightest bit of savvy or imagination when it comes to much of anything, including houses. But, hey, why complain? It benefits people like you and me.

Not only was the black laminate a terrible choice of materials and colour for this Period home, but the shelf Anthony has built is so damn narrow that I haven't a clue what the hell it's good for. About the only things that Allsopp did that I thought improved the look of this home was buying the antique sideboard and chairs for the dining room, buying a headboard for the couple's bed and restoring the Period look of the window trim (where the couple replaced one of the home's original windows).

It's all a matter of what is "trending" at the time. There have been many cycles where naturally finished woodwork and original narrow plank wood floors was all the rage, then it was paint it all over and rip out perfectly good but old flooring for fake wide plank laminate! And then the cycle swung back again. These days, it seems to be more of a balance. Watching shows like Property Brothers where they're working in present time (these most of these Unsellable episodes are 10 years old and more) I think gives people a false idea of what most home buyers really want. If you're looking for a period home, you don't want painted woodwork and uber-modern interiors with every last bit of original character stripped out! Unfortunately, not many homeowners push back against people like the Scott brothers, they're too intimidated.

Look at the wife cast a knowing look at her husband every single time the host talked about how shabby their furniture looked, and how the wife enthusiastically chirps "I AGREE!" while her husband looks almost embarrassed and remains quiet. I cannot fathom why they are planning to produce MORE children right away when they clearly cannot afford the child they already have. :/

They only have houses on the show that a picture perfect except for wall colours and decor (things that should be competely irrelevant for buyers but apparently aren't due to people's stupidity). I wanna see them turning a run down tiny home into a sellable object.

They really do fairly modest makeovers to get ready for sale, not remodels. They only spend about $5000. That is what this show is about. If you don’t like the format there are those that do the whole big remodel.

"Relatively affordable prices?" HA ha ha ha!!! If that house is selling for a whooping $449,000 then it's hardly what most people here in the USA would call relatively affordable...unless they live in New York City, Southern California or the pricey parts of Northern California. That's a mighty expensive house, IMHO. Sadly, now that Sofie Allsopp (AKA "The White Paint Queen") has gotten her tasteless claws into it, much of its original beauty is now marred. By the way Sofie, most architects would be quick to tell you that removing interior doors-especially on a Period home like the one you got your tasteless claws into here-not only destroys the home's original beauty, but also reduces its market worth and-even worse-makes the home a lot less energy efficient too. Furthermore, many potential home buyers DO NOT want to take on the added expense and time needed to re-install the original doors once you are stupid enough to remove them prior to the home's sale. For many savvy potential home buyers it's a deal breaker, unless the home's current owners are willing to fork out the money to re-install the doors themselves, and this couple don't seem to have a dime between them.

I think this house is in Toronto, Ontario. So that price would be relatively affordable. & in Canadian dollars. (Unless it's in Seattle).
@robinjones394

It doesn’t take any money to screw the doors back one... all you need is a screwdriver and a few hours... this is in Toronto Canada... so it’s Canadian dollars... and Toronto is very expensive,., these were the costs back in 2009...imagine what they are like today! I was a big fan of the show... it’s fun to watch them all over again..I don’t always agree with everything they do... like the breakfast bar... I would make wider, and add some cabinets above it as well as a pantry next to it where the big fork and spoon were hanging... some people like painted wood and some don’t...

It's a shame to paint over the quarter sawn period oak. This type of wood is expensive. I had custom made Craftsman style quarter sawn oak cabinets for my new kitchen and they're absolutely beautiful. The cabinets have a lighter finish and they aren't at all oppressive.

I was sick when the new owners of our previous house painted our beautiful 3/4" thick solid hickory kitchen cabinets. The house was a classic Cape Cod style and they put contemporary furniture in it. All of the walls were white and they had pale grey furniture. They took out the island. I had sensory deprivation when I was in it and couldn't wait to get back outside. Some people have zero appreciation for good quality materials.

Right? My home has less than a thousand square feet, 2 bedrooms & 1 office. I call it "The Shoebox." It cost me $125,000 twenty years ago. I feel SO fortunate to have it and for the Midwestern town I live in, it was a fair price. I could never afford to move back East where I was raised.

I had no idea homes in Canada were so incredibly expensive!!! And small! I about die when you say "spacious" and the whole house is maybe 1900 sqft. And at nearly a half million dollars??? Here, you can buy a 3600 sqft home on five gorgeous acres for that price.

Absolutely disgusted that they painted the woodwork. Were I looking to buy, my offer would be $5,000 lower to reflect the work needed to restore it. There are better ways to brighten a room. Why keep talking about original features in this beautiful Craftsman house and then work to hide some of them? It makes no sense.

'Were I looking to buy, my offer would be $5,000 lower to reflect the work needed ...'. The house needed work that others were not prepared to do, hence no sale. I like renovations and would have made a lot of changes to that little house. All the funeral home brown would have been painted over.
