Laura and Errol thought their semi-detached Edwardian home was soundproof…That is, until the new neighbors - her ex-husband’s cousins - moved in next door. Now, the couple is desperate to sell the three-bedroom house, but after six weeks on the market, they haven’t received a single offer. On the plus side, the charming home offers plenty of potential, but with its dark, drab interiors, covered windows, ratty brown furnishings, and dog mausoleum, the property is completely unsellable.
In order to match the home to its price tag, Sofie comes up with a plan to bring out its innate cottage charm. And while Anthony and the team get busy painting, updating the décor, and revealing the home’s features, Sofie intervenes with the agent/friend, and shows the couple what it takes to make a fantastic first impression.

I wouldn't want to live next door to my ex's relative either. I would feel like they were spying on me. The chances of running into my ex would be a turn off. I hope they sold the house.

I actually wonder if this lady had a super toxic relationship with her ex. Closing off windows with curtains and objects, not listening to her realtors plans because she wants her privacy respected, and out of all of the places in that city her ex's family members move in right next to her? It reminds me of those situations where someone's bitter ex keeps finding ways to keep tabs on people.

Having had a vindictive husband whose new wife made my life hell, I totally agree. I'd get a small, yapping dog or two or three... and let them yap all the time INSIDE the house. I suggest chihuahuas. Fight fire with fire. That's how I handle my neighbor's loud car with the thumping bass - Pavarotti. It doesn't take many arias to make it stop. And I sing along with Pavarotti if I need to. :D It works wonders.

This couple had to get out of there. Sad story of the dog dying, but the new neighbours who are her ex's cousins means it's time to move on. Not good for anybody to have a reminder of an ex every time you come home. Nice and simple updating of the house. I really would like to know how long it took for them to sell. Some episodes tell us, others don't. It seems Sophie's big thing is letting in more light and updating to a more modern feel and using the space better by removing furniture, moving furniture around or getting new pieces - and fixing up unfinished reno spots or fixing things that are broken etc. Not easy for everyone to do, but if it helps sell the house quicker it would be worth it. I find it interesting that a lot of the people in these episodes don't seem to have realised that they're selling because they're moving out - and that their own taste and feelings is not as important as getting a quick sale at the right price.

And the current owners keep talking about the noise. Smart to check it out many times, but smarter to just never buy an attached house or condo or apartment of any kind. You have no control over the next door neighbor over time. The great neighbor you discovered next to you could be gone soon or eventually so it doesn't matter how much you check it out. I'd buy a free-standing shack on the edge of town before I'd buy anything attached.

So true. I just made a similar comment. I've noticed that in a lot of episodes the sellers seem to get excited about the updating as if they're going to be living there to enjoy it. It's almost like they're acting like tenants, not owners. I've been to some rental inspections as a renter with the previous tenant still living there and the place is a pig sty. Dirty clothes all over the place, hair in the bathroom sink and shower, dirty dishes in the kitchen, etc - and that's because that previous tenant doesn't care whether the owner finds a new tenant or not. When you're selling a house, it's in your best interests to detach from the house and view it is as a product you're selling - because once you decide to sell, that's what it is: a product. It's not your home anymore.

It needed flowers, and all the suggestions given were right on. I always suggest NEW towels, dish cloths, and a bedding set. This was a good episode. Nice job. However after a gall stone operation, her old age caught up with her and she was ready to pass. My daughter had a special Veterinarian come to the house, Pie let her know it was time and they medically helped Pie to pass away. My kid is tough, but she balled her eyes out, she had her for 8 1/2 years. I gave Pie to her when I went to assisted living I had her for 3 years, since she was a baby. The grey facade of the house was somber. It needed a paint job. The front yard needed some curb appeal. A simple trimming of the hedges would have made the yard attractive. They could have stained the porch flooring. The interior fix was nice, but the rooms still appeared to be dark, considering it was the end house. The bedroom was a big improvement. Hopefully, the homeowners fixed up the remaining bedroom, to compliment the rest of the house. For the first time, the renovation team did not put unnecessary wall hangings (and holes) on the walls.

That is not a condo, so it should be 1 owner not 2 seperate owners for 1 house. It looks stupid with HALF of a house on the outside looking so different. Even when I and another family was just renting a real duplex, we still made sure the outside matched, same flowers in front and similar curtains in the front windows.

We never term this a split house but a duplex. That is the best term for a house split in two and no one I know would buy just half of a house. This said, my sons ex girlfriend had one out in CO and I never cared for it at all. The privacy factor of owning a home of your own is priceless. I really do like the house as an entire house but not split. They did a good job of making it look nice though.
@ScubaSteveCanada
@ScubaSteveCanada 3 года назад
A split house is one that was designed as a fully detached home and later "split in two." Most of these houses, in Toronto, are considered semi-detached and are designed specifically with a common wall/foundation but totally separate living areas. Without seeing it in person, it's difficult to see which one it is.
@romy4593
@romy4593 3 года назад
@@ScubaSteveCanada Yes its just a different term to mean the exact same thing. Here you either split a big house in two or you build two units with only a wall between them and I won't ever live in one..I have my own water view home on a private island that cost us $400,000 14 years ago...now I have incredible value to my home...my neighbors are vacation home owners....only 100 of us live here.... As to splitting a big house, it can be done with separate yards or shared yards. I have Canadian relatives and yes, one of them lived in a split home that was a Quad split...they bought a free standing home recently! To me split homes are like a form of apt due to lack of privacy. I find them very overpriced.

@@jwilliams8931 Its not about living in the country. My Canadian relatives live in Calgary area....she is a caterer and has lived out of town there before. I live on an island out here in WA not the country. It takes us only 15 mins to get to Everett by water, suburb of Seattle. We love visiting our wonderful Canadian relatives as its only around 100 miles to drive to the border crossing from Everett. My comment about how I would not choose it is as a means to live is that I have spent many years in apts in my youth. My comment was about the home itself. I cant imagine paying that kind of money for split home living...I just watched a video about how Calgary ripped down a trailer park because they wanted the property back and it is very valuable. This made 186 trailers full of owners have to give up their homes! They were given $10,000 each to leave and their homes all bull dozed. One elderly man had spent around $20,000 the year before fixing his up, reroofing it etc. It was an open view of a golf course which is worth a lot for developing.......most of them didn't have the money to do anything more then move into sub standard housing. Some of the elderly rented basement apts.

Have to say, bringing blue into a room full of brown is just wrong ... the cream in the bedroom pairs well OTOH. As far as show production goes ... That is some sedating background music for the montages ... ennui rising ... must suppress. And the intro shots of the homeowners at the beginning ... a sudden cut to a stranger staring into a camera is jarring and random. Introduce them first. The zoom onto the porch- seated couple is a better way to introduce two new characters; maybe overlay some names.
