A woman looking for unshakeable inner peace keeps getting lost in thoughts or absorbed by her thoughts. She is under the understanding that the peace comes when thinking stops, and asks how she can observe the thoughts while staying as awareness. Rupert clarifies that peace is found when you recognise the nature of thoughts, not when thoughts come to an end.
He suggests that there is no need to struggle with your thoughts or change your thoughts. You withdraw the permission for them to take you away from yourself and emphasise the consciousness aspect of thinking. That is, you realise that the thought itself is just the experience of thinking, then you drop the label ‘thought’ and instead to be aware of the process of thinking. A thought is an object, thinking is a process. A thought is a noun, thinking is a verb.
In this way, we don’t turn away from the experience of thinking. Instead, we focus on the ‘stuff’ that thinking is made of. Touch that stuff and find out what’s there. Thinking is not nothing, so it must be made of something. If you’re experiencing thinking, you must be experiencing the stuff it is made of.
Contemplate for yourself - is there anything present in thinking other than the knowing of it? Thinking is known. Is there anything apart from knowing in the experience of thinking? You’ll find that thinking and knowing are not two separate things. Thinking is a modulation of knowing. And knowing is consciousness. With this understanding, we can turn towards our thoughts because we see that all that is there in these thoughts is consciousness - myself.
Thus, when we see clearly that all is a modulation of consciousness, we feel unwavering peace, even in the midst of activity.

What he is saying here is so profound. Peace is not necessarily the absence of thinking. When you abide in the basic awareness of being luminosity pervades the mind, the emotions, the world, all that is manifest. It is not a "cutting off". That is a duality. Meditate with your eyes open.

Today I noticed something of importance. The things that I have considered to be pulling me back, pulling me away from consciousness are also part of what I’m needing to find. I have been fighting against life situations and at odds with what I perceived as difficulties. And in doing so, I have been creating a division where none exists.

Thanks for sharing this - I especially agree that the things that seem to be distracting us are exactly the things we need to turn toward to / find. In other words, we need to turn on the light of awareness so that there is no "dark corner" within us.

It is important to realise that the thought process is based on what our memory registers from present moment, and what is registered in the memory is just a reflection of reality (present moment), and not the reality itself. Therefore as much as a thought process can be elegant and wonderful, it only deals with past and future (which is a reflection of the past), and it has nothing to do with present, and it is something which you realise if you are a good observer, and this realization effortlessly leads to the calmdowning of the thought process as the thought energy set back to to its origin.

In the midst of active thinking and intense activities, when i have to do a lot of things at home, when i aware that i am starting to be carried away by the emotions and dislikes caused by the activities, i just utter this word in my mind spontaneously like " i am in this present moment, timeless and eternal..." then what happen next is suddenly i loved everything around me because the burden was lifted away, it turned to compassions and even as washing a dishes i became compassionate on small thing like this, in this wave of peace i found a surge of will and strength to do everything and to have compassions on anything in life.

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful experience of yours. I find exactly the same thing - that energy within me seems to flow out effortlessly, when I don't have an agenda, have no expectations, can accept anything to happen, and simply be in the present moment. Ironically, it never seems natural when I have an agenda / goal and trying to work towards it - it's as if the agenda / goal itself caused suffering.

@@JessMaccain you are welcome sister Daisy, yes an agenda is an objective that creates attachment within us, and every attachment means that we have to suffer because we must or had to work in order to earn those little impermanent wave of happiness from that attachment , so of course working towards an agenda needs an energy and yeah the energy flow will never feel natural once you already know how to find the eternal peace within you versus peace associated or caused by certain circumstances on our physical effort at any time, so constant self awareness of the present moment will always help us to remain aware of the true peace and the legit natural flow of our own energy within, so its a precious practice and meditation one could have done in a day, its a fulfilling our true purpose each of the moment of our breath, its wonderful my friend 🤗😘

@@realityinside9377 Thanks for sharing this! It makes me think that it's probably not "what" we do that matter, but more what "quality" we bring to that doing. That "quality" is ultimately derived from our good relationship with the current moment. This is a very liberating thing to realize, so that we don't only selectively enjoy doing certain things but not others.

@@JessMaccain exactly sister, only when we have spent sometime on this present moment "practice" , like a growing relationship, the so called practice at the beginning will eventually transformed into our ability to naturally becomes aware of the present moment, at this stage when we are facing any agenda or doing any work, big or small, it does not matter but we will always find a fulfillment within it, joy and peace are simultaneously experienced,

Thoughts are accompanied by emotions and emotions generate more thoughts. Alright, we can be happy if we have positive thoughts and emotions. What happens when negative thoughts and emotions occur? Can we be happy then. I wrote " occur " because at least some of the time thinking and feeling just happen. " Just happen " because they're mostly emotions and thoughts suppressed in the past and are surfacing in new costumes. These must be understood for what they are and processed.

This is new for me also but it does change everything indeed. However, I'm either lost in thought (or thinking) or aware off the thinking. I don't understand how you can remain aware of the thinking process while thinking. Have you any tips, insight? 🙏

I did course in consciousness. I had several episodes of ecstacy and rapture.i I went to emptiness beyond mind and body zone lot of times.now I am stuck like...if I rest myself in seeing or hearing or go completely out of focus body gets agitated ..like attack of fits..so I am forced in to be in finite mind.pure awareness has become elusive. Please help me

you are nothing but awareness, let thinking happen as it is not something that is bad nor negative, just a little funny process. Let the body feel what it feels. I felt like i needed to be aware of awareness and subcounsiously treated anything other than pure awareness as negative, when everything is just awareness, wether i am experiencing thinking or not.

@@cherukumudiradha4579 Life is definetly challenging, just know everyone basically suffers on different level. Everything is as it should be. Haven't experienced your state, sounds exhausting but what i do know is: The I AM can't be touched by this physical realm, the real you can't be damaged nor die. So lean in to that. And yes it has been going on for 2 years, but that's just a story in the mind. There is no time, Just the NOW, without the mind, there is no past nor future. I am experiencing challenging times aswell, and i just have to let it all happen and trust in LIFE. Good luck fellow being, hope you find unshakeable peace, which we all inherently have :)

Non Duality is "YOU...AS ....God " Not I am God . Not me and God. Not God is in my Heart. Not I am in the Heart and mind of God. No I and Thou . In non Duality the other as God does not exist . Not two is Eternal Spirit. Not Two is Eternal Peace . From the ancient wise men. The purpose of any Life time. You are not the body and mind you are Eternal Spirit trapped in the body......you have forgotten over many incarnations. The matrix is your own bio computer virtual reality Brain machine that keeps you in the illusion of being a physical Being in a physical world via the Nervous system and the five senses ( the Fallen Angel and Original Sin or Original mistake metaphors). Meditation Separation ( eyes closed) is the ancient practice of putting the body and mind to sleep but staying AWAKE and ALERT inside and separate from the body and mind until you remember and EXPERIENCE yourself as Eternal Spirit again. If you remain in your original and natural State after Meditation it is known as, Self Realization by Yogananda, Samadhi, Moksha, The Holy Grail to Eternal Life not a real cup a literary image, Virtue by Socrates and the Stoic Saints, Obtaining the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology, Satori, Awake as Eternal Spirit again-Buddha, leaving the body but not dying Socrates Ramana Maharishi and Krishnamurti ,the Tao, Garden of Eden, Prodigal Son, Heaven within Luke 17 21, all the same ❤️. .
