I have re-mirrored the Unsu part from the old kata video handed down by Uehara Ko to Miyahira Tamotsu. The full original, mirrored footage is here: • OKINAWA KARATE Old foo...
This is like, though not exactly like, the Unsu taught by Higa Yuchoku of Kyudokan Shorin ryu. It seems to have originated with Arakaki Seishō. The Shotokan kata called Unsu seems to be a different kata entirely. Others will correct me if I'm wrong.
Shotokan Unsu is a derivative of the Shito-Ryu's version. Many of Funakoshi's students were sent to Mabuni to learn kata that weren't in the original Shotokan syllabus. Many of these students died during WW2, so much of its original Unsu form had to be rehashed by the dojo's remaining students. That's why Unsu itself varies between original Shotokan schools (e.g. Kenko-Juku Unsu vs JKA Unsu vs Keio University Unsu). Even the Shotokai school doesn't teach Unsu at all.
He flows from one movement to the next, like Chinese style, yet the movements are those of Karate. This must be old style Okinawa Ryu, when the Chinese influence was more obvious. This should be of interest to modern Karateka seeking to find their roots.
Aragaki Unsu/Unshu. Practically identical to the version we do in Koryu Uchinadi. This is a really excellent performance as well as an invaluable piece of history.
I can verify these moves as effective. I use them against my coworkers when there is only one doughnut left in the lunch room. I always win on a full stomach.
