I studied shuri ryu, Motobu's style. Naihanchi was about the sixth kata we learned-the first part of three, that is, at about brown belt. I only got to shodan so i never learned the third part. Motobu is supposed to have said "naihanchi done as one is the onlyl kata you need to progress in karate". I sure don't want to argue with him, but being an igronant shodan I would have thought you'd need sanchin, tensho or both , for chi development.
@joesmith6199
@joesmith6199 3 года назад
I learned a version of niahanchi sho and ni in shuri ryu. I think we learned it at about green or brown belt. we learned nine kata for shodan. sanchin and tensho are supposed to be for both striking power (ki) and for good health.

His training and teaching methods were very different! He focused more on footwork and posture and transitioned to more practical fighting methods versus the standard way of teaching which was done and still done in , past all karate schools. @@KarateDojowaKu yeah you're right it might be too strong to say that it was a waste, but he belived that Kata had it's limits, and that we shouldn't be constrained by them. @silenciothequiet3471
@silenciothequiet3471 3 года назад
(No karate practioner here) He didn't say kata was useless, he understood that karate's particular use of Katas as a teaching tool was necessary with big group of students but tuning out the bunkai(applications) might turn the practice of Katas(by extension karate) in art form with loose relationships to real fighting and self-defense. One has to understand that before Karate and Judo, MA was an elitist endeavour and the myth of peasants creating MA and their associated weaponries is just a myth. Traditional MA teaching was created for small groups of privileged students or only wealthy or nobility families could afford a MA instructor. Motobu himself was scion from a prominent Okinawan family like many great Okinawan karate masters. Actually many karate schools(uechi ryu,goju ryu) consider sanchin as THE most important kata in their school.

I once read that originally when karate was starting before it was even called karate when it was only know as Te most people only studied one kata all their life. So if someone asked you what art did you study you would reply Saisan or what ever kata you were taught. As restrictions were loosen and the art became more known about more katas were taught and systems began to form. Thats a very condensed version I what I read while studying the history of Okinawa karate. God bless.

Motobu Choki was only an inch taller than Funakoshi-O-Sensei. The probability of the encounter with Funakoshi is slim and next to none! Outside of Motobu’s memoirs and a few “now dead” Motobu students “who thought the fight happened, but couldn’t recall when” no one else says it happened. The fight with the boxer is extremely suspect also.. (no records can be found of any western boxer being in Japan at that time) What the “real” history (non okinawan karate history revision trying to prop itself up while putting Japanese karate down) the real history of Motobu is Far far from what Jesse and this guy think it is. From what I’ve read... he was a drunk, thrown out of every dojo because his attitude sucked, knew one kata (that he learned spying on Itoso and his students) because no one wanted to teach him. Did nothing but fight in bars, ... his only teal claim to fame was he could climb around on the rafters of a house (hence the nickname “the monkey”.. if he was such a great Karat-ka... where is the legion of students that have spread his teachings to the four corners of the globe? He wasn’t even in the top ten (in his prime) Funakoshi was (wasn’t top 5) but being in the top level was seen as being good enouph to demo Karate to the Prince (soon to be Emperor) That’s the real history

One thing i know about choki motobu is he was one of the teachers of my late first souke. Other thing that i know about him was he didn't teach a lot of kata. Only few. The kata should be effective in a fight. If it is not effective, throw it. My sensei once told me: "you know many katas. Now, practice 1, 2, or 3 katas that you like everyday. No more. So, when comes the real fight (street fight or fight with no rules), the movement of the kata we practice will come out automatically." Honestly, everytime i have to do dojo kumite, i automatically use kata pin-an yon-dan or kushanku.

It is okay but NOT integrally true. Choki Motobu had more teachers (Sakuma [Peichin], Matsumura [Sokon], Matsumora Kosaku, Yasutsune Itosu...). He learned NOT ONLY Naifanchi, he leraned CHINTOU, PASSAI...too. But he favorised Naifanchi as fundamental basic. He wrote and did many photos about his „One favorised Kata“. If he teached the students, he shaw them only how to use Naifanchi in the practice. He told that, everybody needs only one kata to be a good fighter. Many people confuse the true about him.

That guy was right, real practice is most important. Though katas contain lots of very good techniques, 99% of modern karatekas practice sport karate. In short, just three punches, three kicks and three blocks. Throws, chokes, joint locks, groundwork, weapons: nearly unheard of. Karate would benefit from more tradition and less sport, I believe. Congrats on your video! 👍

At 0:45 secs into the video the solo practitioner shown in the Black and White grainy image is not Motobu. He is a Taijiquan master Yang Cheng Fu. Please ensure correct attribution.

The bunkai of this kata is brutal (when done right). So it makes sense that this kata is best for self defense or practical application. I never understood why it is needed to train 10 different kata for your 1st dan. In my opinion only 2 kata are needed. One kata to learn the basic techniques and movements (for instance shiho tsuki geri in gensei ryu) and one signature kata for the karate style you train. This kata should learn all techniques needed for your style (like sansai kata in gensei ryu). I know it is tradition to learn more kata. But the two kata I just mentioned, were the only ones that learned me how gensei ryu karate worked and how I could apply the techniques. I learned naihanchi also, but even my sensei did not know the correct bunkai. I learned it from a shihan years later...Long story short: learn two important kata only and understand and apply the bunkai :-)

The many Kata are taught do they will not be forgotten, in the days of the old masters, like Kusanku etc. They may have only practiced 1 to 3 Kata. Most specialized in one kata, and fighting technique.

Motobu Choki emphasized kumite, but by "kumite" he meant what we would call "yakusoku kumite". For him kumite was an essential part of training (along with picking fights in the red-light district to test his skills). He didn't agree with the trend during the Taisho era to emphasize kata over kumite. And his kumite drills are realistic and practical, unlike modern yakusoku kumite.

Kata for me it's like Shadow Boxing, it's very useful obviously it's not a real fight but a exercise you do for let your mind sharp and always ready to fight and help relax.

Too much kata ==> make you dumb funakoshi also told that 5 kata maximum is enough We loose too much time in : -kata endless -bunkai unrealist Time that we don t put in : -westerling -ground -work on condittional physics. juste karate shotokan == you will be defeated in real fight or in clinch situation Signed by a karate jutsu lover

Maybe its an American thing, but theres too much emphasis on Kata. If I have training partners I want to practice technique with them. Not perform choreography beside them

@@KarateDojowaKu I have all three katas in photo form and practice the whole form. I am a Shorinji Kempo stylist and we do not have katas as is portrayed in other systems. While we are required to show a series of techniques for advancement alone nothing like long-form katas. Naihanchi has much to offer to a dedicated practitioner who is willing to digest the combat applications of each movement Ian Abernathy does a very good series on this.

I learned Naihanchi and there was 3 in the series. My instructor told us it was only one large kata at one point, but was broken into 3 later. Do you know if these was the case? Sho Dan seems very short. Thank you Sir.

Like Tyson said...everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. So, don't get punched in the face. 1000 punches to a bag that doesn't hit back, and then go out and get punched once and all plans change
