There seems to be a lot of differing opinions around the concept of contrast level in your own coloring and its relationship to your color season. This is the first video of the new Color Series on my channel where we deep-dive into the concept of finding your own contrast level and connecting the dots to where you might sit on the seasonal colors system.

I had lipsticks that I really thought were a good colors for me, but once I tried it on the colors looked so overwhelming on me. Then I did the lipstick test (from one of your previous videos) and that realized it the issue wasn't the color itself; but the intensity of the color and the contrast they created on my face. So now I can wear all of my lipsticks no problem, all I have to do is apply a very thin and delicate layer; OR apply it as normal but wipe ~50% of it off. (I have medium-low contrast).

I think the best way to determine your colour season is by doing the 3 tests of cold/warm, bright/muted and light/dark. Not every test might give you a clear answer but there will probably will be one test with a very clear answer, and go from there. Because colours can match multiple criterias. So if you test pastel blue vs royal blue and the light blue looks better, is it because it is muted and the other is bright, or because it is light and the other is medium/dark. If you already know you belong to a cold season, then this test might be helpful for determine if you're a summer or winter, or if you know you're a summer it can determine if you are true or light summer. But if you already know you are muted then the test is not very helpful and should be adjusted by comparing two muted colors etc

I don't know why I have such a difficult time with deciding what contrast I am (have?) Maybe that means medium (although my mum & sister both told me high but that may be because they both have very low (&light) contrast. I also feel like my hair changes how dark or light it seems constantly. One day I think I have quite dark brown hair and the next I think it's actually pretty light to medium brown. I really can't tell. The only thing I know is that I am cool toned. But I really appreciate your analytical approach when it comes to these topics!

I was going to say something similar to @minglian9335, but from the hydration aspect. I notice on my own wavy/curly hair that if it's feeling a bit drier it's lighter in colour, but if it's well hydrated it's darker. And it can change with the seasons too, summer can lighten it up a little and winter can be a bit darker.

always on point Jenn. thank you!! I've seen contrast defined by its relationship to all three chromatic characteristics individually, but never in relation to all of them simultaneously, which I think is a more realistic approach. Excited for the rest of this series! I used to think I’m a deep autumn until I realized how important contrast was - I’m pretty low contrast even though I’m Asian, and I finally realized dark and/or saturated colors don’t work on me. On another note, a friend recently got her color analysis done in Korea, and she said they told her Asians often get mistyped as autumn or winter due to the dark hair, even though a lot of Asians are actually spring/summer. Do you have plans to dive deeper into color analysis by race? That would be super helpful for me, I have no idea what my season is anymore lol
@littlelady7843

Great idea! I am Asian too. It will be really helpful to have a deep dive as there is lack of understanding what colors look good on individuals. Chinese new year just passed. Traditionally, everyone wears the bright red, but only some look good. Color analysis is way more developed in the western culture and mostly for white people. We need to develop this for other races as we do look very different.

I think there is also contrast by temperature. So if all your features are very cool or very warm it can look quite muted. But if for example your skin leans more warm and your hair more cool naturally then there is more contrast. It's the case for me. My main trait is cool. I have light cool skin, grayish blue eyes and dark ash blond hair. There is some contrast between my hair and skin but it does also kinda blend in. And i have seen this with very warm people as well where there might theoretically be a bit of contrast due to light/dark but because everything is very warm it blends in. I also once took the color picker tool on a photo of mine to create a color palette of my natural coloring and all the colors were very muted

It makes sense to me that the dominant trait of a (sub)season is most evident and that can be either temperature (cool/warm) OR dark/light (value) OR saturation (chroma). So saying not to start with contrast level (or something else) as a blanket statement seems short-sighted, especially if you're not used to watching how colours affect you.

2:11 + 3:18 + 4:41 THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!! I’m tired of seeing bc i’m dark skinned I’m automatically high contrast when i can see in real life that high contrast tends to look jarring on me compared to softer/ muted tones! I’m still not sure if my contrast is my primary or the fact that i’m a warmer skin tone, i just know that I’m somewhere in autumn and i tend to lean in preference towards deep autumn. But i can pull off some soft autumn colours well too, not any true autumn though - hence the confusion. At this point I just pick a colours within autumn that look good on me lol 6:56 that explains a wholleee lot thank you sm🫶🏾 I’m planning to dye my black hair to a chocolate brown shade with bright brown highlights and very few blonde highlights… will this change my colour season? I'm not sure about the patterns. I feel like winters can rock the white and black checkered outfits because of their high-level of light-dark contrast. So I've always thought complicated and very busy patterns were reserved for people needing a mix of depth and high chroma characteristics. I thought that thinking checked out bc of how you described light autumns vs soft springs from an earlier video where you described soft autumns as not being able to carry patterns vs light autumns who can. Granted, those are very nuanced seasons so it makes sense that their determinations would come from a place of how their depth, contrast, and chroma intertwine and play together! Soo...will definitely be looking out for that eventual patterns video!

@potatolover4662
@potatolover4662 5 месяцев назад
Hi, I have also struggled to figure out if I was a bright or dark winter. What I did to determine was I held pieces of clothing of different colors close to my face. For example a very bright royal blue vs navy. If navy looks better dark, ıf royal blue looks better bright winter. Because the difference of the both seasons is that in bright winter brightness comes first, in dark winter darkness comes first and they're both cool seasons. So for bright winter it's like bright then cool, for dark winter it's dark then cool. That's why I gave blue as an example. It's a cool color. If the bright shade of the cool color looks better on you than the dark shade of the cool color then you're a bright winter, if not dark winter. You can also try with cool purples and burgundies. That's just my experience and I am just someone who loves color analysis I am not an expert by any means.

I feel like finding my season is always so dificult because I dye my hair such a drastcly diferent color from my natural one. I think naturally I have soft, low contrast coloring (fair skin, light brown eyes, and light brown to dark blond hair depending on the light). All my natural featurs seam to kind of blend together but since I now dye my hair a deep red, all of my features seem much more high contrast. All my natural featurs seem to point to me being some kind of summer but soft colors really wash me out and when I look at the colors I look best in, they seem to be mostly winter and some autumn colors. I've even had people guess that I'm on the cusp of dark autumn and dark winter. Basically I can't tell if im actually a dark season or if I've somehow curated my appearance though hair color and make up to fit a different season... I'm so confused!

I think Ângela when was younger had more contrast. Does aging alter your contrast level? I think even if I have dark hair,skin and eyes, i eliminated the deep seasons bcs of my contrast level and how i look in deep colors in general. I experiment with lipstick shades bcs that is more easly for me to idealize. Deep lipstick such as deep red, very muted colors and highly contrastesd makeup looks awful on me.
@stylemejenn
@stylemejenn 5 месяцев назад
Experimenting with lipstick colors is a great way imo as well! But I do find that there are variances between lip color and clothing so I like using both methods :) Some elements of contrast can change with aging due to the grays, but there are also other factors like your skin clarity, eye color, clarity of the sclera etc that don't change as drastically with age, so it's difficult to say for sure that aging lowers the contrast level for everyone!

I know! There’s really so many different ways of segregating seasons that I’m starting to lose track 😂 I’ve seen systems you described that segregate True vs Cool/Warm seasons. The system I’m referring to also names Deep Summer as a Shaded Summer!!
@janekof
@janekof 4 месяца назад
The more western systems separate True Spring/Autumn/Winter/Summer from Cool Winter/Summer and Warm Spring/Autumn. Sometimes there's a difference between the definitions of those tho! Some will say the True season is anyone who prioritizes the three characteristics equally --> e.g. True Summer needs colors that are equally soft, cool, and light. Whereas a Cool Summer is someone who prioritizes coolness the most and can be close to Cool Winter on the spectrum. Others will say that someone in a True season will be anyone who wear any of the colors in the the seasons family --> e.g. Someone who can wear all the colors in cool summer, light summer, and soft summer is a True Summer. Jenn often references 16 seasons, more popular in eastern systems, although I have seen one western system use it but with different names (like calling Deep Summer as Shaded Summer or Soft Spring as Toned Spring). This system adds one sub-season to each season based on a "missing" quality. So Spring and Winter get a slightly muted sub-season called Soft Spring or Soft Winter. Autumn gets Light Autumn and Summer gets Deep Summer.

im just wondering, if you had really dark skin, would it be the other way around? and a dark brown would be low contrast, but a light beige high? I think about this every time this comes up and how it relates to colour seasons, in the way that a very fair and a very dark skinned person would be typed as the same season, but for different reasons so to say. What do you think about this?
@stylemejenn
@stylemejenn 5 месяцев назад
I think that contrast can still be created through eyes and teeth against very dark skin, and depending on how dark the hair is, against the hair color as well. If the skin is very dark to the point where there is little contrast created even against very dark hair, then that much more striking contrast against teeth and eyes imo! Also contrast created with clarity would also be a factor to consider. I do think that because skin tone is the largest surface area visible, depth of skin does have an impact on which colours create high or low contrast to some degree, but it’s not the only factor to consider!

I'm going to try going back to my lighter more neutral color blonde wigs. Thank you for that helpful information.

@@stylemejenn I think I'm less bright than the examples you use, so I think I'm a true winter maybe. Not sure, but I do know that choosing a lighter, brighter blonde wig with roots brings my look a lot more alive, even if it's a less natural looking color like a honey blonde. Those blondes are meh on me. I have hazel eyes and not that stark katy perry cool toned look. Still, I do believe the light bright blonde brings me closer to the striking look of when I was young and brunette.

I have dark hair and eyes with light-medium skin. (High contrast?) All of these features are quite warm, and I’ve never been able to figure out my “season.” Please halp.

What colour are the veins in your wrist if you look at them in natural light? Do you look better in gold jewellery or silver?

If you look at the color recommendations for the 4 seasons, don't you have an immediate favorite? I can type myself as a winter, just by considering what colors I know suit me.
