Watch The New Generation CHANGED The BJJ Belt System : • The New Generation CHA...
The notion of hierarchy has always existed since the beginning of man. This system of grading has cut across different facets of life, including the martial arts world. The renowned belt system used for ranking the most skilled and prestigious fighters can be traced far back to the origins of Jiu Jitsu. But still, the belt system wasn’t the first way fighters were ranked. The ancient, 8th century ranking system was simple, with only two steps, and far from being saturated as the different belt colors in today’s martial arts, especially in BJJ.
The BJJ belt system has come with a lot of controversies, from lesser belts doing the most and giving a higher belt the worst whooping they could imagine to students whose skills are way below the standard of their belt rank in another gym.
Now you begin to question your reality. Should we return to the middle age era, where the ranking was simple, stick to what it is right now, or should the belt system be totally scrapped from existence?

The biggest problem with the BJJ belt system is that there is no universal curriculum and standards that the ranks associate to, like other arts.

I trained Tae Kwon Do for almost 8 years with a several time Olympic gold mentalist. I remember how good I felt when I finally earned that belt. About a year later I was at this gym sparring with a training partner and a bare knuckle boxer came in from the street looking to practice and washed the floor with me sparing. I will say that without a doubt that there is no feeling worse in the world than feeling like your black belt doesn’t mean anything. I recently started Mauy Thai and BJJ and let’s just say I’m happy to be a white belt again. For anyone watching this worried about belts; I would say don’t worry about the belt just focus on getting better and enjoy learning from those better than you it’s about the journey not about the color of the belt.

The belt system is great. But ir would work better if there was a consensus curriculum stating what skills are included in each belt. For example, what exactly does a white belt need to demonstrate to earn a blue belt? (The answers vary greatly, but it would be nice if that weren't the case.).

A martial arts belt only means what the person who gave it to you says it means. Standards are different from style to style and within styles can be different from school to school and in schools can be different from instructor to instructor.

Belts are great, especially as the sport continues to grow at the youth level. You shouldnt move to the next belt until you're dominating your belt. Nothing worse than getting a promotion too early and finding that out the hard way

Belt rank sort of matters, but it's not a 100% correlation to fighting skill. I was a black belt candidate in karate when I was 20 years old, and I beat all the second degree black belts in sparring every match, and could even beat black belts in a handicap match, but because I technically didnt meet some kata and bunkai requirements, my Sensei kept failing me on the BB test. Most of fighting is actually taught at white belt level. The rest of it is pure instinct IMO. Beating two "black belts" attacking me simultaneously was all instinct and physical fitness at the time.

You can't compare belt in bjj and in karate though. Sorry to say :( It's just different. Too many factors.
@model84
@model84 3 месяца назад
yes and no, in any sports you have some sort of division between pro and amateur participants. Belts are sort of 'carrot' to motivate and if you go beyond blue, every one knows that belts doesn't matter. But i think it's important for competition to motivate, otherwise we'll end like in judo, f.e. i train 3 months and get set with olimpic medalist, what's the point in it? The idea of growth was to 'fight' with people of similar skill level. If you go to no gi (f.e. NAGA) you still have beginner/advanced/expert (or however it's called now)

I think it depends on the situation. My case is unique because I have basically been stuck at the white belt level for over 25 years. When I was just getting ready to earn my blue belt, I had life challenges that happened that prevented my promotion. Fortunately, I have a wrestling and submission background and I can accept that I can at least prove that I know what I am doing. I will be judged on my performance and not the color cloth around my waist. I am always welcomed in the gym practice regularly with good friends and am free of belt politics.
@MMABJJChamps
@MMABJJChamps 3 месяца назад
So basically you are a black belt hehe
@tommytaylor2799
@tommytaylor2799 3 месяца назад
I cannot say that; even if I do well, I still have imposter syndrome and I still believe there is more to know for example, the guard is not always a norm for me I try to use it to escape or submit with wrestling influence. I can just say it has been a struggle for me when dealing with BJJ. Next month I plan to try again with BJJ and hopefully continue forward. In the video, there was mention of sandbagging and many people at my academy have asked me how I am still a white belt. Perhaps it is accurate to say that I have the potential to earn a black belt and would have had it sooner if circumstances worked differently. Nevertheless, I learned a lot from the submission wrestling. @@MMABJJChamps

I don’t think we can use the success of a phenom to compare … sure she’s a 16 year old blue belt but she’s not the average blue belt. If we use them as standards, what about a BB that can’t beat Gordon, Galvao?

That I agree. But we should add a universal curriculum for each belt.
@jakedo4577
@jakedo4577 3 месяца назад
It’s tricky because I do feel like it’s a necessary aspect of BJJ. Given how the art had been developed and evolved with time, I am on the opinion that belt rank matters. However, the requirements for belt promotion should be higher, because when you placed ages, physiological and competitive as a factor for promotion. It should be noted that it could increase an individual chance of getting their promotion. But if you compare that person to the team, it’s quite a big difference. Because the team dynamics plays a heavy role on the individual style of BJJ. In conclusion, I am on the side of keeping the belt system. Despite its flaws, I find it to be a necessity to tracking one journey. P.S: I am currently a 5th stripes White, only did this for 8 months.

The way belts were conceived initially was that someone was given a belt with their Gi and over ti their gi and belt would darken from the time they spent in it gaining natural wear and tear gradually over time it showed their dedication to the martial art. why not go back to doing it the way that takes you 30 years to get a black belt eh?

@@MMABJJChamps I heard stories about people not having the skills to the belt they have or viceversa. I am only a blue and don't want to get into deep water but for me the belt represents the time you put on the mat more than anything. There is a lot of people with different skills in all the ranks and the mats never lie. I will definitely suggest to enjoy the ride. @@MMABJJChamps Well, your video had a lot of misinformation you are only repeating common misconceptions, for example the Go idea is incomplete because in Go the pieces dont have hierachy, What he copy from Go was the raking system of Kyu and Dan. The color Black for advanced and white from beginners He got it from swimmers. 16 years of MA may sound impresive to a beginner but a lot of people out there have many more, myself included. Also you probably dont understand this but fact and opinions are not the same thing. You are free to share you thoughts not to make your own facts.
