There is always a huge discussion about belts in BJJ. However, people never really talk about the stripes on these belts. Most people don't even understand what stripes really mean.
Basically, in between every belt, grapplers should receive 4 stripes before unlocking the next belt.
But times have changed and a whole lot is changing with it. With new academies, the requirements to get belts are changing(3:08), and while some are more strict, others are not too rigid.
While some academies hand out these so-called stripes in between belts, others do not. Also, with the new generation of NO GI BJJ, grapplers never wear their belts around their waist. We admit that this can get a little confusing.
What is the meaning of these stripes and how important are they? If they are so important, how come not all schools hand them out?
Should stripes(0:11-~) be scrapped or not?

I'm a four stripe blue belt and I enjoy getting stripes because it tells me what my level is and how close I am to the next belt. It feels good to get a new belt

I think it gives encouragement and drive to keep going. I also think that coaches know when you've grown in Jujitsu.

Oh yes . Im always looking at the stripes of my Students . Shows the time on the Matt and tells big stories !

It the same in karate- judo or japanese jiu jitsu where they give you a new belt every 6 month (yellow,orange,green,blue,brown) to to motivate and reward you. practitioners of bjj that teach the art see also the usefulness of stripes compare to kyu ranks (karate,judo,jjj)

@@MMABJJChampsI agree. I seen red tape used for symbolism, of winning your first competition or being qualified to teach and open a Dojo/gym. That's a Big milestone. Not only that it's a way to share and acknowledge with the class that helped you get to that milestone.

The only personnal disadvantage i find with stripes is that usually i look out for them before a sparring and can somehow change the way i am going to play against my opponent. I'm trying to get rid of that feeling but it's hard. I think a no stripes academy would suit me better for this but having a stripe keeps you going and gives you a sense of accomplishment

Yea I used to think like this. But now, when you start the fight, you can feel how the person moves and thinks, you can guess their belt... or close to.

It's just something to mark your progression. That's all! For you competitor out there, stipes may not be necessary, but to hobbyists, stipes help to maintain their motivation

When i started in 2008 No school had Stripes except for black belts....then at around 2012 many schools started to add Stripes to their belt system to keep people motivated

We’ve recently got rid of stripes; had only done it since it was a tradition my instructor had. Felt that the stripes put more emphasis on performing for the instructor than actually acquiring the skill. We now judge on the demonstration of skill consistently through training or tournaments.

In Brasil we have the melquigalvao academy they used to train no-gi with the belt and rashguard. The Mica Galvão academy .

OK? Not enough data here if you wrestled since you were six years old all the way in middle school high school and then started doing jiu-jitsu. Yeah probably get your blue belt in three months.

I feel like they are equivalent to most of the awards/ medals in the military and with that, supposedly Napoleon said it best…”it’s amazing what men will do for a piece of colored ribbon.” It’s subjective as to what the stripes mean, as with belts, but they certainly don’t hurt the art and I’d argue help keep people motivated.

It’s a way to keep people motivated;period. I’ve seen a person’s whole demeanor change when getting a stripe because they recognize they are getting better. It really depends, but it is what it is.

It helps me as a knew white belt know what to expect out of the other white with getting a blue is almost 2 years away. Let's me know this whites almost a blue and this blue almost a purple. This purple just got it.

I see both sides. Ive been training for about 10 weeks now. It definately helps with motovation for me. Because bjj is mostly grappling, it can be hard to tell if you're improving other than wins and losses, especially when wins are hard to come by as a new person. Having those stripes are nice to me because they allow me to see my progress when it may not be visible otherwise. My school does them. I dont have any yet, but i will be excited to get my 1st one.

they are important only at black belt. otherwise they are a retention tool for the gym to keep its students happy and working towards their goals (and also paying). i think its important for kids especially to get stripes but adults it doesnt really matter

Stripes should be there for the instructor to see how good the student has become in this belt. I like the system but don’t mind being a white belt for 1+ years with no stripes. Learning and learning is all the matters.

Stripes are great morivstion especially for white bemts as it xan be a long journey . As long as your at a school that isnt pay as you go, your belt should matter. Belts are absolutely earned and the difference between a 1 stripe white and a 4 strioe white are VERY different. As king as that cintinues to himd true they have their place.

For white belts they are more important. A 4 stripe white belt is a different roll than a brand new guy. And I will roll differently with them, as I don't want to scare a newbie away. And I want to push a 4 stripe more.

When I first started bjj in 97 there where no stripes. However after they made stripes the thing the art took off. Most Americans need that constant pat on the back to stay in an activity and thats what stripes are.

In my experience a no stripe white belt is very different to a 4-stripe white belt. I think stripes mean less in terms of ability as you work your way up the belts.

Clearly an instructor sees the improvement of a student and has an idea as to when he will get his next belt, so why not represent that status on the belt with stripes? It makes sense to me, and it's intuitive. People who are against stripes are just maximalist curmudgeons. And if you are at a school that doesn't offer stripes, that's cool, too, but I prefer to have the stripe system.

Strips are trash. They have no quantitative value. A black belt is just the mastery of the basics. No belt is equal. Belts are your progress bar. Comparison is the thief of joy; just keep training.

@@mandalove1858 well honestly with the rapid growth of the sport colored belts could become meaningless entirely or again just back to no stripes because what do you do with the next generation that’s been training since they were five years old and doing three classes a day? All the sudden they turned 16 and their blue belts that doesn’t make any sense. These kids are already rolling better than belts.

@@Lifecounselor710 no ranked system can encapsulate any sort of skill perfectly. Almost nothing in this world can be summed up that simply. You have to not put so much emphasis on the color of the belt. Like how you said before how you shouldn’t compare. The belt isn’t as much saying how good you are compared to other but how good you are versus how good you were before

The only thing is that from white to blue, I think it's very important. The first 1 year of training goes so fast, that's its fun to see where you stand. After that, fine, bring the stripes only to BB.

Theres no regulation and no real meaning - BJJ has no real 'tradition' as it was all made up reletaively recently, to suit this very new Sport.....unlike TMA which have a long lineage to have to conform to (...or not....)

For white belts i feel like it makes sense even at blue belt , i know i felt great back in the day about the promotion. Now a days though meh, couple stripes fell off my belt a few months ago and i couldnt be bothered to put them back on 🤷‍♂️
