Introducing what I like to call ' Nevernamed's latest desperate attempt to be funny'. Also some of the music in this video is from a game called Wuppo. I would 100% reccomend it. Just a tip.
Nevernamed I have some skill with file rebuilding, maybe some of those "empty" images actually contain content, but don't display due to corruption. If you can explain how to get access to these files, I can try to restore them if they have any content.
Chest Ahead is a reference to dark souls where players could write messages in the floors and be shared across servers. Often used to find secret rooms. One would probably appear before a secret room like the Brick of Cash
CuttingRoom floor is a mod by GoldenRevolver that brought back alot of these cut items. I recently upgraded the functionality of his Monster Ball item by converting enemies caught by into functional companions that follow you instead of standard charmed enemies you normally can't bring with you into new rooms.
40 whole minutes of gungeon unused content. Dear. God. Add on: the “monster ball” and “moster sphere” was likely removed due to it’s EXTREMELY HIGH resemblance to an item from The Binding Of Isaac Rebirth, of a similar name. They both work the same: throw at enemy, they become charmed, throw it out. Add on 2: The Wonder Scroll “the one with a supposedly random effect” is also likely a reference to a Binding of Isaac Rebirth item, “Dead Sea Scrolls”, which, when used, has a random effect. Add on 3: I think that box red and box green are like active versions of the ammo boxes, maybe? Add on 4: Car Battery is likely a reference to the Binding of Isaac Rebirth item, car battery, that lets you charge, and use, an active item twice. Add on 5: While the idea of the elite badge mentioned in the video is probably right, I feel it might be something along the lines of “increased curse but just a flat damage increase aswell” Add on 6: I know, I’m a Binding of Isaac freak, but, halo, in the Binding of Isaac (with a very similar sprite), is an all stats up. Maybe the halo in gungeon would’ve been similar? Add on 7: the leaf item, resembles “gnawed leaf”, an item from (guess what game) The Binding of Isaac, that makes the player invincible while standing perfectly still. Add on 8: the “pouches” item looks a lot like the holster item. Add on 9: Ring of boomerang mastery may have been similar to the *Binding of Isaac item*, broken mirror, which makes projectiles arc towards the player as if the player had immense gravity Add on 10: Training droid would have likely been like the familiar that spawns when you use that one specific rocket launcher (I forgot it’s name), where it would orbit you and occasionally shoot at enemies.
“Next quarter” is a reference to arcade cabinets where you would put a quarter on the marquee to reserve the next game. It’s probably an extra life or a way to change your gungeoneer mid-run.
Yeah considering the uncanny face it has and the blood red texture, I'm assuming it's effect would have been similar to the stone dome and/or increases damage maybe
20:16 "Foz die" is likely a reference to Metal Gear's "Fox Die" virus. It even has a similar logo to Foxhound. 26:44 Okay, I think someone at Dodge Roll is a Metal Gear Solid fan.
The entire team must be metal gear fans, the was cycling weapons works is similar to MGS1, and quick swapping between the last two guns used could be inspired by MGS2
26:10 these are probably references to: Contra, along with the P and P+ 27:47 its a reference to the golden ring in: Lord of the rings, One ring to rule them all. Ya know 26:37 this is probably a stretch, but it's probably a reference to the: Dragon Ball radar from where else: Dragon Ball 28:17 the scary mask references: RED. the main antagonist from the: NES Godzilla creepypasta
Gungeon: hey Tboi can i copy your items? Tboi: yeah but change them a little bit. Gungeon: *Basically copies gnawed leaf and puts 'Leaf' as a sprite name* nah scrap it.
The gnawed leaf in a reference to tanookis and foxes how would transform using a leaf with a notch out of it. It could be completely unrelated to Isaac
31:24 Time code tattoo is a reference to Futurama where Fry gets the code for Paradox free time travel tattooed on him Edit: I'd also like to say how impressive it is you got any many references as you have
A wonderful collection of unused content! Here's some of the references that may or may not be accurate The "Climbing Glove" is a reference to the item of the same name in Spelunky The "Gun Stop Credit Chit" isn't misspelled, "Chit" is a real term used for a voucher of sorts The "Leaf" may be a reference to the "Gnawed leaf" from BoI or from Animal Crossing. The strange green "V" of "Master Exploder" is likely an old-school armor pickup from games like DOOM or Serious Sam The "Ring of Invisibility" is likely plain to look similar to the One Ring from Lord of the Rings The "Time Code Tattoo" is a reference to at least Futurama, where a character discovers a tattoo that allows time travel the "Training Droid" is likely a reference to the original Star Wars film A "Reversed Polarity Sonic Screwdriver" likely has an opposite of reversed effect to a Sonic Screwdriver... which is anything apparently The "Killamajig" appears similar to the illustrations of Dr. Seuss and has a related-ly absurd name The "Deposit Key" may be a reference to an item in Risk of Rain which adds an additional chest to every level The "Cartographers Assistant" appears somewhat visually similar to a Ghost from Destiny "Bloo Blood" may be named such because it could use Goo, or because "Bloo" is blood misspelled
14:25 Dear God! 23:29 Master Exploder is a song by Tenacious D from the movie Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny 26:15 Power ups from Contra games 26:32 Dragon Ball radar
20:14 Foz Die is a pretty common Metal Gear reference, where "Fox Die" was a virus created so it would only kill certain targeted people, usually making it look like a heart-attack ((There are so many Metal Gear references in this game, i knew Fox Die had to be one)) 21:22 just might be another Metal Gear reference 28:51 another Dark Souls reference, obviously about the lost souls you can find and use to gain more *souls* ((currency in-game)) 33:52 Gears Of War reference, "Hammer Of Dawn" is a really important weapon on that series, mainly for the story
30:02 T Stopper is probably a reference to Mega Man 2, as there is a weapon in that game that stops time and has an icon like that. Also I think weapons had 1 letter for the first word in early megaman games.
15:28 I’m fairly certain the Cartographer’s Assistant is a reference to the Monitors from Halo. In Halo 4, there’s a mission entitled “The Silent Cartographer”, and Monitors are essentially the janitors/tour guides of Halo rings.
Just a weird side note: The little subtext for the fairy wings is, despite it's vagueness, a reference to a character from Dragon Age known as Sandal, who would only say one or two words. His most notable being, of course, Enchantment.
Wow that secret message around 2:56 is really cool, could this be hinting at an ARG? We just have to check the link in the secret to find out. Cleets and Gloves are probably a reference to Spelunky, and the candy as well as some other graphics look old (in my opinion) because they have a completely different style than the rest of the items. This is also supported by the fact that the candy charges by room, which means at some point in development it was probably just a tBoI ripoff, or something of the sort. The winged powerup sprites are a reference to the game Contra. The summoning book is a reference to ye olden Final Fantasy games where green orbs would come from your player when you summoned something. The T Stopper is a reference to the Megaman Weapon of course. Training Droid is an obvious reference to Star Wars. The medkit is a reference to DooM, as the sprite looks almost exactly like the one from DooM but scaled down of course.
21:03 Chit is actually a real word that is appropriately used. Taken from Merriam-Webster: Chit _noun_ a small slip of paper with writing on it _especially_ : a signed voucher of a small debt (as for food)
14:42. The bubble candy sorta reminds me off the bubble charm from candies n curses. It's a charm that every room you get a three hit bubble/shield, just sherch it up for details. But that might serve as a explanation
The shrinking lightning bolt item is probably a reference to Mario Kart, the green climbing gloves probably reference Spelunky, and I think the Time Code Tattoo is a reference to one of the Futrama movies where Fry travels through time by reading the binary code tattooed on his butt. I wonder how that would have been implemented as an item? Also maybe the bandage referenced Super Meat Boy? That might be a bit of a stretch though.
Foz Die is almost certainly a Metal Gear reference. It's almost identical in appearance to the logo of the "FOXHOUND" unit, and its name likely references the "FOXDIE" virus from the series.
Video:Plays Nightmare king grimm bossfight music Me:PTSD fashbacks Also the time code tattoo is a reference to a futurama episode, in the show it was used to time travel but im not sure on how the hell you could get this from opening a chest.
I love your old man bullet voice. c: Also, 'moving chest' made me think of the similarly named item in binding of isaac that lets you store items in it to take them with you to other rooms. Something like that would be useful to keep the Handsome Ratto from getting them.
30:04 The "T. Stopper" Is likely a prototype of a feature that actually was implemented. The "Get Equipped With -F-" Synergy for the Megahand is actually based on a weapon from Mega Man 2. That weapon was the Time Stopper, and four pointed stars/sparkle effects are associated with it, so this might have been how they initially had it work, as an Active, rather than changing the Megahand Weapon by reloading while at full ammo.
I think the "Chest Ahead Messages" would have been from the Cartography Assistant, like a Brick of Cash that marks doors you need to use to get to a chest as fast as possible.
11:53 Something I would have loved if it were in the game, is if you got this final round while fighting the Lich, and maybe it could have been the final blow against the lich.
29:45 - those are Final Fantasy summoning orbs; those symbols are used in a lot of the games during summoning. I also appreciate the Nightmare King Grimm music during that scene.
The dog tags item likely is a passive that causes dog tags to drop when you kill enemies. It's probably a reference to COD and its "kill confirmed" gamemode. On pickup they give money or something else.
The Raccoon is a reference to Sly Cooper as Sly Cooper was a theif (and raccoon) and his last game did deal with time travel. Also I heard Angle Dust from Hazbin Hotel during the Ring of Giant Strength entry. Also the Wonder Scroll could of have the random ability you said but that would make it really close to TBoI's Sunken Scroll.
the number 1 headband might not be a variant of the number 2 headband, but instead a different item that played off of it, since having both feels like a reference to afro samurai, or bigger one than it already is alternatively number 2 could've become number 1 when player 1 dies, either way, it was scrapped.
23:34 Master Exploder is reference to Tenacious D song. And iteam here is a pick od destiny 26:16 powerups lookl like from Contra on NES 31:22 Training Droid is reference to Star Wars
21:04 Chit is just an English word that the western world really doesn't use often. It's a bank note, voucher, or any other "IOU" for funds and transactions.
References I got: Hungry Caterpillar: The very hungry caterpillar (Children's book) The Raccoon: Sly Cooper (PlayStation series) ThunderBolt: Mario Kart (Nintendo Series) 'Chest Ahead' Message: Dark Souls (RPG Series) Climbing Gloves: Spelunky (Indie game) Foz Die: Metal Gear (Konami Series) Leaf: Might be animal crossing (Nintendo series) Stud finder: Might be a reference to the LEGO video games Training Droid: Star Wars (You know star wars)
15:58 HAHAHAHAHAH CASUL. They are the dark souls messages.Usually (always) placed by trolls... Like saying "treasure ahead" but there is only a pit...Truly a trick for the weak minded naive casuls. Who would fall for this? Man I wonder what effect they chose... Are they going to actually make a pit? A mimic? A room full of enemies?
18:26 Based on all the other MGS references in Gungeon it likely would've been a reference to Metal Gear Solid 2, where you can collect the dogtags of enemy guards by holding them up and threatening them. 20:15 Another MGS reference. It resembles the insignia of the fictional special forces group FOXHOUND and it's name is probably a reference to FOXDIE, which is a fictional virus that targets specific people based on DNA. 15:47 The messages are a refernce to Dark Souls where with the Orange (Sign?) Soapstone item you can write simple messages that can be seen by other players. (It would probably spawn signs near chest rooms to tell you where chests are, and possibly even some misleading messages) 28:53 Another Dark Souls reference. Consumable soul items have similar names(eg.: Soul of Lost Undead)
Hey, you wanted a big comment with some of the references you missed, right? I'm pretty sure "Blast Eddie" from the Cue Bullet description is the Gungeon version of "Fast" Eddie Felson from The Hustler and The Colour of Money. The Scroll of Wonder is probably a reference to the Wand of Wonder from D&D, which has a bunch of random effects, from turning you blue to petrifying your enemies. GunStop Credit Chit isn't a typo - "chit" is an older word for "IOU" so it would represent taking a gun back to GunStop for store credit. The green V from Master Exploder is definitely the Pick of Destiny from the Tenacious D movie. Next Quarter isn't about financial quarters, it's about arcades - if someone was playing a game you wanted to have a go at, you'd put a coin on the edge of the machine to let them know. I think in America they might have said "next quarter" which they were doing that? So maybe that item would let you continue your run as another character or something. Powerup (the last 2 with the wings) looks a lot like the ones from Contra. Presumably the Sonic Screwdriver is Reversed Polarity because it breaks things, rather than fixing things like a screwdriver should. Time Code Tattoo is a Futurama reference, specifically the movie Bender's Big Score. The P on the Strategy Guide might be for Prima, the company that made all those strategy guides that game stores would try to upsell you on when you pre-ordered.
Bloo could just be a portmanteau of blue and goo. Cartographer's Assistant and the "Chest Ahead" message could have been connected. The Assist looks like a eye piece of some sort which makes me think of Tony Stark's assistant. Climbing Gloves could have been a way to get back to a previous floor. Elite Badge reminds me of Terraria's Destroyer's Badge. Hankerchief could be a reference to Master Chief of some sort. Key Bullets...well...the lowercase r precursor? Rat Master Round could also have been a precursor of the gnawed key. Moving Box could also have been a way to carry an extra active item...but probably removed because...using an active item to hold another extra item is just kinda dumb ain't it. Radar is obviously a reference to Dragon Ball Z. Red Pill was probably unused due to political context. Spark Reactor is a reference to Marvel's Iron Man...namely the Stark Reactor in his chest.
Climbing glove is a reference for Spelunky Grey crown is a reference to Nuclear Throne where crowns are one of main goals Master Exploder is for a song and THE BEST BAND IN THE WOOORLD! Tenacious D IT resembles a guitar pick from their movie
I personally support theory about meta coin being an old version of hegemony credit. I mean in the early versions the shells looked like coins so the hegemony credits might have looked like a coin too.
The 'Next Quarter' would be completely opaque to anyone who didn't experience the Golden Age of Arcades. When people were playing a game, you'd place your quarter up on the machine to signify that 'you got next.' No quarter on the cabinet, no place in line. Arcade cultures would deal with rulebreakers harshly.
Scary Mask is an obvious nod to Red from the Creepypasta NES Godzilla, where red was the main antagonist of the Creepypasta. It could have many uses, but I believe its an reskined version of Bullet Idol, only it gives curse as well. It could be a reference to Halloween masks as well, but all I know is that it's a reference to the Creepypasta.
Climbing Head was a terraria reference, Stud Finder is Lego games, training droid is starwars... Im shocked how much cut content there is in this game that just references random games haha, awesome
I'm surprised I've yet to find a comment saying something about homestuck, but in 14:16, "Bloo Blood" being spelled the way it is might be a reference to Equius Zahhak. Why "Bloo" is spelled like that might be a reference to his typing quirk and the fact that the blood inside the bag looks indigo makes me suspect it is a Homestuck reference
Fozdie resembles tbe foxhound logo from metal gear solid, the name is similar to a targeted virus in the series known as foxdie. Ratdie is likely reference to this The mirror may be related to a link to the pasts magic mirror The layer items were probably all part of one item at one point, like photoshop layers, though you probably know that The powerups are probably a reference to schmups and contra, probably thought of an item thatd give you powers on killing enemies sometimes Eneloop might be short for something and is a partical effect? Stud finder might be a reference to legos games.. Maybe idk Training droid is clearly starwars but you probably just didnt say it
I think the elite badge is a reference to Kingdom hearts on the ds where you would grab elite badges letting you replay the level. But hey what do I know
I wonder if the true final boss was planned to be Kaliber. You kill her warrior and she faces you directly. One of the Bible-like ammonomicon entry’s says that once the final chamber is fired the jammed shall ascend and seal the breach forever. Perhaps the Cultists past wasn’t the only time we were going to fight in the breach...
A small not, the "Climbing Gloves" look suspiciously like those from Spelunky. That being said, this video is 3 years old, so I am certainly wasting my time here.
Or, in a more overpowered idea, what if the final master round PERMANENTLY upgraded your base health. Maybe you had to have every other master round to get it, and maybe you had to get it per charecter.
I'm impressed with how many cut items are in this game. 21:04 "Chit" is not a misspelling. A chit is like a receipt, invoice, or statement of credit. My guess is that Gun Stop Chit indicated that the gungeoneer held store credit, and would allow for a discounted or free gun purchase.
I know your lore is mainly ETG, but I’d really appreciate if you checked out a game called hollow knight, because the lore in that game is up to so much interpretation. Also check out a guy called mossbag, has some cool stuff.
