Over the past few weeks I’ve been running a series of experiments with my NutriSense CGM device to see how my body responds to different foods, stress, and hot/cold therapy. In this video I’ll share the factors that caused the biggest changes to my glucose levels, explain why timing of carbs matters and show you why not all “keto” bars are made equal.

I have! I learned the greatest truth. Pizza will spike blood sugar like crazy! but it's still delicious....

ive been wearing freestyle libre past 3 months, make sure to double check your results with actual blood glucose monitor because freestyle can be off in up or down by quite a lot, like 10mg/dL (one was 100 off but that was just broken unit)

also you need to check with cgm 5-10 minutes after blood reading bcoz freestyle has a lag

Great video! I've been thinking about CGMs and your video has been very informational. I'd like to suggest something if I may, try putting different charts together on the same screen at the end while comparing products or protein bars in this instance. It'll help to get the overall picture easier.

Thanks for the video. I'm a type 1 and found your channel just trying to see blood glucose levels in non-diabetics (our aim at T1s is to try and match that of non-diabetics). Anyway, T1s have intimate knowledge of these types of devices and what is really going on with nutrition, insulin, and glucose. I think your eating experiments are valid, but want to let you and your viewers know about the temperature experiments. You may have already figured this out, but the test with hot and cold therapy do not necessarily reflect changes in your actual blood glucose. These types of devices measure the glucose in your interstitial fluid; they don't actually measure blood glucose. When you immerse yourself in cold water, your body quickly pulls fluid into your core. In these types of devices, it causes a dramatic and rapid change the the measured levels in the interstitial fluid - but does not necessarily correlate with actual blood glucose levels. The same can be said for sauna and hot showers (except the flow is in the opposite direction). Luckily, all of your numbers are excellent - data that I wish I could emulate with injected insulin... but there isn't really much valid data to be gained from rapid temperature changes.

The Pendulum Glucose Control is too expensive. man. I was disappointed. I loved the video. Since I just finished my CGM and I did learn a lot and your video, so it added more information to my knowledge base.

I know! They are trying to bring down cost... it will happen probably in the next 5-10 years I expect mass market CGMs to become more like $50/month. Just a guess. It’s still wrapped up in the prescription industry :/

Yup... it is really for diabetics or people with serious concern of controlling glucose. Unfortunately it’s a small team and a new science that doesn’t have easy production like other probiotics. They want to make it cheaper. There’s a great interview with the founder on Kevin Rose’s podcast. Also I’m interviewing her this week, so stay tuned for that!

Great video full of useful info. I will try the cold therapy, sauna experiments as well using my new Nutrisense CGM. Just curious - did you have to do many calibration adjusts for each different sensor patch. I will calibrate my CGM against my keto mojo strips

It's interesting how much you learn about these things when you or a family member gets type 1 diabetes. For instance your experiment with food order (eating carbs first or second) is something we use as a treatment strategy all the time. If you're low and need to get your levels up, you eat fast acting carbs. Those work faster. Then you can follow it up with protein to help keep your levels up. When my daughter was first diagnosed, I remember calling the on call Endo about 3 am cuz I was giving her carbs and she just kept falling. I was so scared. He said she needs protein to keep her up. He said a PBJ, chocolate milk or ice cream. And it worked. A lot of parents in the community will put their kids to sleep with a bit of chocolate milk to keep their levels up overnight. It would be interesting for someone like you to maybe sit down with a knowledgeable type 1 and see how them using science and nutrition and glucose and insulin to literally keep themselves alive could provide some insights. I think it is all fascinating.

I dont have a ice bath. I just store 2 or 3 1-1.5 litre bottles from the fridge and dunk it over my head, torso, limbs after a meal or post workout. Good old 10 minute work after a meal does the trick to lower glucose levels

Really loving these CGM type of videos from a non diabetic standpoint. I must say that my reaction at first was why would anyone without type 1 like me wear such a thing? Its not ment for you and using it is really disrespectful! But I must say you do things in a really respectful manner and scientific way. I like that very much. So keep that going! As a type 1 diabetic myself I also got some ideas from this video. Manly for things like ice bath and sauna therapy. Can’t wait for the Pendulum video. Very curios to try that out myself to see if it has any effects on me. Cheers!

Honestly this comment means so much to me! Thank you! Being honest and respectful is a guiding principle with all my videos. I make videos like this with the hope that it will inspire others to take care of their health, learn more about what is best for their own unique biology, and thus live a longer and healthier lives. It frustrates me that most CGMs sit behind a prescription barrier and doctors won't recommend CGMs to people who aren't diabetic... especially considering how many Americans are prediabetic! I truly believe that access to your own data is something everyone should have a right to. You shouldn't have to wait until your sick to start monitoring your health. Thank you for sharing and I'm very happy you got something out of this video!

I have noticed this with help of my blucon's food insights option that if i eat a fruit in late evening hours it causes a spike in my blood sugars and next day fasting also remains elevated, rather if i have it in mid morning and afternoon the levels still remain fine.

If only Nutrisense weren't so expensive! But $350 per/mth for 1 month or a subscription for $250 per/mth for 3 mths or $225 per/mth for 6 mths is way too pricey - even if it comes with contact with a nutritionist! You can tell that they are aware that this is an unattractive component as they aren't straight forward about the price on their website but hopefully it will become more affordable after in the future.

Fyi! The libre sensor is sensitive is sensitive to heat! I goes up every time I take a hot or warm shower!

Hey I actually did test that and saw a small spike. Not a lot but it definitely affects glucose. Bulletproof with just MCT and butter does not move my glucose at all.

Haha you’re welcome. Sorry, not gonna lie ;) If you’re looking for a way to add flavor to your coffee but don’t want to spike glucose... My fiancé has been putting almond butter in the blender with his coffee. It’s surprisingly delicious.

@@katie_moore While it didn't affect glucose, did you notice that your level stayed at a relatively higher level for a longer period vs. a more immediate drop to lower levels? Just curious. If one’s blood glucose levels are pretty normal, what would be the benefit of artificially lowering it through the use of Pendulum, barberine, Metformin, or any other glucose lowering supplement/med? Does that cause weight loss, fat burning, or some other benefit? Thanks.

Not really necessary. What's very cool is looking at how your glucose levels drop overnight. It was shocking to see how much late evening meals affected my levels for HOURS of my sleep. but yeah, you can see all that in the Nutrisense app. Comparing glucose level with REM and Deep you'll have to do by toggling back and forth between apps.

The biggest experiment that surprised me was eating Fritos. I spiked at 180. I do not eat sugar-added foods, but that caught me off guard. I should not eat 1/2 of the large bag, either. lol

The bar experiment is interesting. I know sugar levels were the same, how about carbs and protein? Based on branding and your results, I'd expect the Perfect Keto to have a lower % of calories from carbs/protein and thus cause less of a spike. Separate but related: a company called Generation UCAN makes an engineered carbohydrate that doesn't spike blood sugar at all. Supposed to give you the best of both worlds, i.e. the energy benefit of carbs but no blood sugar spike. They sell it in bars and powders. I can personally vouch that it doesn't spike blood sugar or knock me out of ketosis; energy benefits harder to quantify since I already feel energized with or without carbs.

That's a very interesting idea. The perfect keto bar actually had more calories, fat and protein than bulletproof. It had similiar calories to Quest, though less protein and more fat. So it may indeed be a matter of the amount of fat or lack of protein in association with the carbs. Interesting! Thanks for the tip about UCAN. that is super interesting! I'm definitely going to check them out.

Also...normal is healthy...not low or high. Too low of cholesterol will shorten life faster than high, low blood sugar can put you in a coma & worse, low or high blood pressure is not healthy either. Normal is the key to health

i tried nutrisense. didn't like it in my arm as i sleep with my arm under my pillow usually. didn't like that it was a full 15 minutes between samples - give that dang thing some more RAM. didn't like the absolute accuracy compared to a ketomojo or similar. my baseline is the most important thing i think, right? and why are you worrying about such a small jump for a short amount of time. it's the time AND duration in combination that are important I think (area under the curve). Those AUC amounts were pretty small. I think? The one good thing about it all though is SEEING the data. regardless of how accurate and continuously monitored.

I have watched a number of your videos and some of your content is good but I do find it disrespectful that you are “mimicking” the struggles of a real diabetic. The use of CGM devices should be prioritised for diabetics, they are not toys for peoples curiosity. I am worried that people will watch your channel and change their treatment based on some if your findings. This is a dangerous precedent as you are not a diabetic and do not understand the consequences and effect this can have on a real diabetic.

I don’t know if you realize it’s getting more recommended for non diabetics sbd pre diabetics to monitor to be proactive. Most people they say are pre diabetic and don’t know it. Doing experiment’s help give ideas for other people. We aren’t baby’s and anybody who thinks we are all alike and react the same should stay away from the internet altogether. I love these experiments it gives me ideas for myself to try. I’m not officially pre diabetic but I do spike in those ranges so I like to experiment and I will NEVER take meds. Learning diets, Even “cheats”, Exercise etc to manage my spikes and prevent turning into a diabetic. I know diabetics and diet without meds has absolutely managed their levels.
