A remarkable discovery in a rural church turned out to be one of the most important fabric discoveries of recent times. A video of the cloth being unveiled for journalists at a preview by Historic Royal Palace curators.

Such a fascinating artifact. It’s too bad the sound is so faint, the expert speaking is sharing a great deal more insight about the textile itself than is typically given by others I have heard speaking about it. While historic royal provenance is always interesting, it’s the material aspects and their symbolism, what they mean and how they came to be that I find most compelling. Thanks for sharing.

Yawn. The embroidery in China, Japan and Asia is far superior. A few years ago I saw embroidery in Vietnam in Ho chi minh city that is collected by various European royals. It was in the tradition of the ancient Chinese embroidery with thread so fine that the women who did this work often went blind. It was really expensive.

Nonetheless, this is a superb example of *this* type of embroidery and, as the curator said, probably the only such example in the world. If you go the Wikipedia article about the Braxton Altar Cloth, you will see more about its original colors and its historical significance: it is the only known surviving garment of Queen Elizabeth I. The delicacy of this flawless embroidery on cloth of silver is truly impressive.
