About KIRBY:
Kirby Pábalan-Táyag Aráullo is a Filipino American historian, content creator, and renowned culture bearer based in California. He is also the author of the groundbreaking book “Black Lives & Brown Freedom: Untold Histories of War, Solidarity, & Genocide,” and the Co-Founder and former Director of Operations for the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies at the University of California, Davis.
Kirby is a direct descendant of the last indigenous Paramount Kings of Luzon (of both Lakandúlâ of Tondo and Rája Matandá of Maynílâ), of the anti-colonial revolutionary Katipuneros, and of World War II Guerilyeras who fought for the liberation of the islands we now call the Philippines.
Born in Angeles City, Philippines, Kirby spent his childhood amidst the rebuilding of his homeland in the aftermath of Mt. Pinatubo’s cataclysmic eruption. His childhood beneath the shadows of the city’s red-light district, slum neighborhoods, and Clark Air Base (a former U.S. military installation) sparked his lifelong passion in advocating for the rights and the well-being of marginalized and disenfranchised communities. As a direct descendant of revolutionaries, politicos, and activists, Kirby’s upbringing was molded by productively engaging and navigating the realms of advocacy, traditional politics, and grassroots activism.
With a keen interest in varying fields (such as history, public affairs, and filmmaking) and a strong commitment to serving the community, Kirby studied at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, such as Harvard University, the University of California, Davis, and the Université catholique de Louvain (one of Europe’s oldest universities). He has been teaching Filipino people’s history through writing in indigenous Philippine scripts (Kulitan & Baybayin) for over a decade.
Today, Kirby is well-known for his educationally engaging RU-vid channel where you can find videos about history, culture, and everything in between! He is also currently working on his next big book “Luzones & the New World: Forgotten Histories from Southeast Asia to the Americas” along with an easy-to-read book and zine series known as “Know Our Roots,” and an educational coloring book series called “Color Our Roots.”
Kirby is an educator who is well-rooted in his culture and passionate about his colorful heritage (Kapampángan, Tagálog, Indigenous Áytá, Pangasinan, and Spanish-Basque-Portuguese-Irish Mestizo); he strives to decolonize Philippine history and democratize Ethnic Studies through knowledge and creativity. Kirby is a Dátû and Lakan by blood but an Artist-Scholar-Activist at heart.

Learning here that the surname Mallari is connected to precolonial diety Namalyari makes the story more scary. Father Mallari could be a descendant of pre colonial shamans, babaylan and catalonans.

I appreciate your engagement with the video! I wanted to add that Magalang has a fascinating connection to supernatural elements. Many individuals who continue to embrace our precolonial beliefs, often blending Christian/Catholic practices with indigenous spirituality, consider Magalang as a significant hub. On a related note, in Kapampangan culture, Babaylans are referred to as Mamaluyans and Katulunans. An interesting distinction exists between Mamaluyans and Katulunans - Mamaluyans are believed to be vessels possessed by deities (derived from the root word 'Balluyan,' meaning vessel), while Katulunans communicate with the divine through dreams.

Is this mean that there is NO ENOUGH EVIDENCE pointing out to Fr. Mallari about the murders of those people? And yet, they blame all the blood and deaths to him. Aside from being a priest in the 1800s, i did not know that he is also an artist (by doing calligraphy). This made me think that there were people who got insecure to him especially the spanish priest. What if a spanish priest had the same situation (became an alleged murderer), will the he also face the same fate as fr. Mallari? Also, if fr. Mallari is suffering from a mental health at that time, he should be brought in the mental hospital and not a prison. I have to find the book you recommended.
@KirbyAraullo
@KirbyAraullo 5 месяцев назад
Who knew being an artist and a priest in the 1800s would be such a deadly combination? Maybe calligraphy skills were a secret weapon back then! jk... but seriously tho, it's definitely interesting to think about the lack of evidence and how it affected Fr. Mallari's case. It's important to consider all angles before jumping to conclusions.
@giliwjuanista
@giliwjuanista 5 месяцев назад
@@KirbyAraullo i totally agree with you. Thank you for covering this topic. 🤗 Maybe, art and faith should not be mastered by one person during those times. Not to mention that he is a filipino (or an indio as the spanish like to call us) Maybe, the spaniards were scared of what it can do. It could be use as a weapon. Hheh. Especially, looking at the position (being a parish priest in Magalang) and influence (his brother is a mayor or gobernadorcillo at that time) of Fr. Mallari. Did he confessed the murders before he was hanged? What are the connection of all the murders that happened? I've read that it is 57 murders. Is it only in Magalang, Pampanga? Did he even go through proper trial and investigation or they just grab him, put into prison (for 10 plus years) then hanged publicly? I mean, after some priest visited his home because he was sick and saw the evidences of the murders. Now, i have a lot of question after watching this. Hhahah. I do not know how the justice works in the 1800s in the Philippines. But the lack of evidence is intriguing and how they point it all out to Fr. Mallari. It's true to consider all angles before jumping to conclusion and judgment. This is important.

What? serial murders were always considered as murders not a form of mental illness up until recently ..... Fr Mallari should be considered as an island born spaniard...... PEOPLE ARE FORGETTING THAT the native indios were only given spanish surnames in 1849 way after the alleged incidents.
@KirbyAraullo
@KirbyAraullo 5 месяцев назад
Fr. Mallari was an Indio from Pampanga, not an island born Spaniard (Insular/Insulares). In fact, Mallari is not a Spanish surname. It's an indigenous Kapampángan name. Surnames, both native and Spanish, also existed long before Claveria's decree in 1849. Here's an old video I made about the 1849 decree + Spanish & Filipino surnames 👇🏼 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KyVo55NZTGU.htmlsi=f-vtgR6GWObakT5Y
@KirbyAraullo
@KirbyAraullo 5 месяцев назад
Also, I never said serial murders were not considered murders. Looking at the records itself, there was no sufficient evidence linking Fr. Mallari to all of the 57 murders. What it shows was that Fr. Mallari was suffering from mental illness. Though I'm NOT saying that his mental illness excuses him from the murders or any alleged crimes.. There simply was NO sufficient nor conclusive evidence proving he did commit all 57 murders.

@@eldansambatyonThat leyenda negra never left Filipinos. View our history with indifference, don't politicize it with this idea that our colonial history is black and white. The spanish versus the natives. Good vs evil. Even one of the GomBurZa martyrs is a mestizo (spanish lieutenant father and native mother), and one is a tornatras (spanish, chinese, native mix). Getting rid of "colonial mentality" doesn't mean hating and devaluing the Spanish and their influences just because it's easier to pin a group as evil to give rise to nationalism. Getting rid of "colonial mentality" is recognizing historical truths and experiences of our people. To be honest, thinking of yours is the most common considering how our government seems to have opted for a etnnocentric tagalog-oriented pro-american and anti-hispanic view. You're trying really, really hard to pin everything evil and bad to the devil called Spain. That is not how we should view history.
