How interesting! I loved the ocean foam tie in. I've always wondered what contributes to that behavior. Now I can imagine the zoomed-in difference between saltwater and tap water. Great visuals here, by the way!

Nice way of triggering the nucleation, great idea! Didn't the mythbusters (many years back) try to analyse the relative impact of each ingredient on the foaming during the original mentos/coke viral videos? I seem to remember that the aspartame had the greatest effect, but I may be wrong.

Thank you 😊 Yes, the Mythbusters did indeed explore the role of soda and candy ingredients on the Mentos and Coke fountain. I have published work on this subject. You should try using nitrogen as well sense drafts are capable of holding significantly more microspherals of bubbles. The reaction could potentially be significantly larger. You should also try the elephants toothpaste reaction inside of the ultrasonic cleaner to see if that makes a difference when the catalyst is added

Interesting ideas...the reagents from elephant's toothpaste might damage the ultrasound cleaner tho

@TommyTechnetium I didn't think of that until after I posted it. What if a shield was covering an Elhenmier flask with a silicone-based glue? Nothing is worth destroying equipment over, of course. If you are interested in design ideas, I can though some low-budget ideas your way.

@@TheDeepDiveLLC It might be worth trying to see what would happen to 3% peroxide exposed to ultrasound...might the ultrasound initiate decomposition? If so, slowly increase the concentration...

@TommyTechnetium the whole chemical reaction with 3%. I know the catalyst would react, just not violently. Hmm. Even scaling everything down in a large flask might also be a good idea. I'm intrigued now. I just don't have the ultrasonic cleaner

@@TheDeepDiveLLC I'll try to pop some 3% peroxide in the cleaner today. I'll let you know what I see. Remind me if I don't respond within 24 hours...I do tend to be absent minded

I love a good mess made for science! To what extent have people tried to disentangle physical (suspended solids, e.g.) from chemical effects here? Are there things you could add that would stabilize larger bubbles and/or make it easier for them to form, i.e. make sonicating even more of a dud than plain seltzer water?

Great questions! There is indeed much to explore here, and a rich literature exists on the interplay between solute particles, surfactants, bubbles, and foams!
