My 3rd myth: People often express fear about "crazy people" being a danger.
Myths In Mental Health Stigma.
However, psychopaths ("psychos") and sociopaths are violent, but schizophrenics usually nonviolent. Psychopathic and psychotic have different meanings altogether.
I see the etymological overlap, but people with schizophrenia are far likelier to harm themselves and are unlikely to be a danger to others. People do not go back and forth between psychopathic and psychotic. Psychopaths are a group of people that are likely to commit violence, including serial and mass killing. They rarely show symptoms of schizophrenia.
BC Schizophrenia Society is running a campaign to raise awareness about myths and facts regarding schizophrenia.

Very well said and so true. I have heard the myth from a police officer who believes if you have schizophrenia you are automatically dangerous, because you could snap at any moment. And that means in his mind, if you have schizophrenia, you are undoubtedly guilty of whatever crime is at hand. But the reality is, schizophrenia seems to make a person less able to accomplish even the simplest tasks they need to do, on a bad day. I mean well and I care. No harm intended.

Thank you for your comment. No harm received. Yes, bias and stigma in the "higher ups" or "authorities" such as police or doctors is the _worst_ sort of disrespect, because their power to choose what happens to you can be fairly abject and absolute. They can decide what to tell others, and others in the "care" stream can believe them. This means treatment can be totally based on lies and events which never happened or were interpreted wrongly. That is _not_ in the interest of any one facing such big problems as schizophrenia, problems which are already significant _without_ any lies interfering with treatment.

Aw, that sounds great. It's nice to "clean up".... Change can be so welcome. Not good to shame someone for long hair, but sometimes there is a difference in a before/after picture in terms of self-care, which is what's valuable to encourage, not the mere act of a haircut. Good luck with everything in the coming months. Do you have any questions about advice? I like giving free advice to people who can value from the experience I have!!

yea a schizophrenic at best and of course when they have just broken through and havent had any meds or therapy yet is too busy (if they are aware of themselves anymore and some do lose the battle) with themselves and their internal stuff to be concerned with many other things i would think. to put it into perspective take the hebephrenics for instance, they barely know the difference between a soda bottle to the titanic and some of them probably do not have the internal understanding of being violent as a choice where as a psychopath is our common variety serial killer and very strange brains that are wired for violence and to put it in a kind of military thing, serial killers cant stop seeing red its their life and purpose to them there is no off switch and no therapy can fix it.

Interesting response. Yes, I agree one with SZ is more focused inwardly and harmlessly and can be helped where the other is in full control of choices, but vicious, cruel, and arbitrary in their temperament.

I have described psychosis as "inflammation of the mind" for some time. It's a great descriptor!
