Had the same thoughts, wondered if I was reading the same book as everyone else. Also why don’t you change up wrapped up- similarly to what Emily Fox does, read a book until you want to DNF it then unwrap another until you actually complete a book. Be kind to yourself. Also we *love* an unwrapped moment. The more books we get to see you pick, the better in my opinion

I think you should allow yourself to dnf a book, its just a waste of your valuable time 😅 maybe just unwrap a second book? Thats also a way to get through them 😊 but thats maybe the part of me speaking who loves the unwrapping part 😂

I completely agree! To me it makes complete sense to DNF if 1/3 of the way through the book if it’s not interesting. And unwrapping books until finding one there’s a desire to actually finish would help get the unread books off the shelves. I also love the unwrapping so much though so I’m biased hahaha

I think you should be allowed to dnf! Maybe if you feel bad about it you can try to pick another wrapped up book (probably a shorter one)? Life is too short to be reading bad books!!!

I would say pick a book with like no expectation to be a 5 star - just a quick palette cleanser of a book, something fun and short to reset your reading brain

I loved Uprooted and I thought Spinning Silver was more fun but not quite as “good” if that makes sense? I know lots of people who didn’t like Uprooted but still liked Spinning Silver though. If your issue is the pacing and writing style, it suffers from more or less the same issues in Spinning Silver as it did in Uprooted (VERY slow pacing, some characters could be fleshed out more, and I personally took issue with some relationships). I feel like maybe you’ll like the characters more in Spinning Silver though which could help loads! Maybe check it out from the library, read the first few chapters and decide whether or not you want to read it!

I loved Uprooted and couldn’t tell you why exactly (it’s been over 6 years since I read it) and it prompted me to pick up Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series, the only other thing she had out at the time (I’ve read her entire backlist) and the Temeraire series is her magnum opus, a more perfect series does not exist.

Everytime someone says they didn‘t like Uprooted my heart breaks a little 😀🙈I loved this book so much and to this day it is one of my all time favourites! I was enchanted from the beginning and later it was one twist after another (plus I loved the ending). But I hope you find your next 5 star read soon!

oh that sucks that you disliked this book! i hope you have better reading this year going forward!! 🫶 you have had an unusual and slightly chaotic start to the year with being ill, plans being changed and having to move miles away at fairly short notice. that's 100% gonna affect your headspace and your enjoyment of things (and reading not the greatest books). don't be too hard on yourself for only reading 3 books so far this year, that's perfectly normal for all you've had going on!

I think spinning silver will be more like the bear and the nightingale than uprooted is. Definitely has that fairytale element to it and also the Russian vibes you describe. Also, don't be discouraged from trying Naomi Novik's other books. I really loved the deadly education trilogy 😍👍

This is so relatable because I just read Spinning Silver (I also loved Bear and the Nightingale) and I didn’t hate it but it was such a slog, I couldn’t wait for it to be over 😩 so yeah idk, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it and I’m definitely unhauling Uprooted after seeing this video 😂 also, all my reads have been 3 stars so far so you’re not alone.

everyone says spinning silver is way better than uprooted so could still be worth a try. (I haven't read it though) I read uprooted back before I rated things but looking back on it I probably would have given it a 3. I really liked the beginning but didn't care about where it went in the end (battles? not what I'm here for, I am here for the small town dynamics) and thought the romance made no sense at all (honestly at the beginning I thought she was going to realise she was in love with the best friend and still hold that that would have been better) so when you didn't like the beginning I was not surprised you didn't end up liking it at all

If it makes you feel better the 1 book I finished this year was a 1 star. I have already dnf'd a book. Out of the 2 I'm currently reading 1 may be dnf'd though it may have just turned to the positive and the other is really good but not meeting my expectations. Both will also take me forever to read cause I'm working 2 jobs rn. Not having a good start to the reading year

I'd picked up Spinning Silver because I'd heard so many people saying it was great and DNFd at about 40-50% because I was soooo damn bored. Based on that plus your experience with Uprooted I'd recommend staying away from it

I DNF’d this book a few months ago because of how absolutely bored I was. I think if a book isn’t going to have a clear end goal that motivates you to get to the end it should at least have interesting characters or world building 😭

Yesss, I also hated Uprooted and gave it 1 star! For pretty much all the same reasons you mentioned! I’m sorry you had to push yourself through this crap, but also I feel so vindicated. I read it for my irl book club and that’s the only reason I finished. BORING AF. I decided then that I wouldn’t read another Naomi Novik book and I feel pretty confident in that decision. I was done way too dirty by this one.

I haven't read Uprooted, but I read Spinning Silver a couple of years ago because everyone loved it so much, and I thought it was so incredibly boring. I truly felt like I read something wrong because of how people adore it. Seeing this video I feel a bit vindicated, because most of the issues you had with Uprooted, I had with Spinning Silver as well.

I’m not a dnfer, but if I was, this would have been it. When I think of my most disappointing book, it’s Uprooted. I was so bored and frustrated because the idea of the story had so much potential, but I was angry by the end because it was so unbelievably wordy with nothing of interest going on.

Funny watching this on a day I’ve dnf’d 3 books, I saw your review then also deleted this from my kindle - I wasn’t keen on Spinning Silver so if this isn’t meant to be as good no point trying. Just give yourself permission to ding and unwrap another book.

Also, to me the main goal of the series is for you to get these old books off your TBR. DNFing and unhauling is just as good as reading them! (And actually BETTER if you then read another book -> 2 books gone!)

Never read uprooted but I did read Spinning Silver. At that time, i didn't enjoy it. I looked back on my goodreads and i said that some characters were interesting and some characters fell flat and their povs felt unnecessary :/ Wasn't a bad book but just not for me.

I liked both Uprooted and Spinning silver, but you shouldn't pressure yourself to read something you don't want to read. Maybe you should skip Spinning silver.
